Going grey and a new coif...

Planning for retirement means that a few changes are wise and prudent...
at least for a Humble Hostess as money does not grow on trees.

Thoughts on what is important, priorities and the lifestyle changes I need to make
have been occupying my mind.

One of which is my hair...
I have been going to the hairdresser every 5 -6 weeks for all over colour and a cut.
The cost of which is rather dear.
I adore my hairdresser and hope that as long as she continues to work that we will enjoy our visits but they will be less often starting now.
In consultation with my hairdresser I am not going to have all over colour anymore.
Instead there will be a few highlights added at the root line every couple of months to allow for the gradual growing in and transition of the greys!

She agreed with me that we chop a bunch off and have a new look while we embark on this new path.
I'm excited about the change!
It really pays to have someone onboard who knows your hair texture and knows what will suit your face shape.
I haven't a clue!

you can see how much shorter it is...

the weight of the length gone and now the curls spring loose

the tinsel is there at the root line
and as time goes by there will be more tress bling!

There will be a few more lifestyle changes in the works
I'll keep you posted as they surface on  the radar!

Hope that you have a wonderful weekend...

I like it!

I like it, too! (Personally never got into the coloring "game", so don't know the process to get out of it...) I enjoyed your last post and subscribe to YOUR definition of good style. I'm not always successful at achieving it, but I certainly aspire to it :)

I love your new 'do! My hair dresser said she would help me go gray when I'm ready - following the same process that you're doing. I'm not ready yet - maybe in 2 years when I'm 60.

Your new 'do is trés chic! And you most likely will enjoy your "platinum highlights" as they grow in. I used to colour my hair but stopped for the same reasons you cite and I have had many compliments about my natural silver highlights. The trick to not looking old with grey hair is to have a fashion forward cut and keep it well trimmed.

I think you look very chic. Have a great weekend.

In November I had the last of my 'highlights' cut off as I made the same transition you are making now. I had never coloured my red hair until I turned 50. A hairdresser suggested blonde highlights to mask the white the was so in evidence. I ended up blonde and kept going blonder. I felt like I was loosing my identity!

I ended up getting a cut with a hip young thing who remarked with surprise: 'Why, you're a red head!' after she had trimmed off a lot of my dry frizzy (blonde) ends.

I got a cut much like yours (LOVE!)and my hair texture is much the same. It took about 1 year to make the transition. Curls are such a blessing when growing out coloured hair!

I'm preparing for retirement in 2-3 years, and am trying to 'curate' my wardrobe for my current work life with a view to transitioning to retirement. I'm 2 months into a shopping fast and having fun shopping my closet.

I hope the changes you make bring you pleasure and freedom.

I love your new "do." My hairdresser doesn't seem to want to help me go gray so I still go for color and a cut every 5 weeks. Her cuts are right for me, but goodness I'm ready to make the transition.Wish I had your hair.

I love your new haircut. It will look great with your 'new' color! Looking forward to hearing about the other changes you make as you near retirement. Not sure exactly when that will happen for me, as I stayed home with the children when they were young, and am enjoying my work for the moment. I do miss being at home though, so will read about your transition with great interest.

Your cut is adorable and suits you so well - you're blessed with those curls! I never went for colour and have always looked on the grey streaks as 'my' highlights.

Great hair cut! Should require little upkeep, particularly in warm weather. Looks like you have enough curl to just wash, scrunch it up, and maybe dry with a difuser on your hair dryer. Aveda has a great product line called Be Curly that you might check out. My hair has never been totally straight, but it seems the older I get, the curlier it becomes, and also a shorter "do" is much more attractive on women our age--makes us look younger. Less time spent on hair leaves us time for other fun things to do.

I love your new hairdo. You should be able to manage for curls well. I'll be watching because I would like to go grey but I wonder about grey and curly. The length really suits you.

I wish I were as brave as you Leslie. I look forward to seeing your transition. I would love to give up highlighting my hair, and I dread the day I have to do an allover colour. I'm 30% grey now, and every day I find another grey hair in my eyebrows.

I grew out my dyed blonde bob cold turkey. I'd been colouring my hair for decades, so was really curious what colour was under there! It took about 18 months -- and looked pretty scary for most of that time -- but I finally cut off the very last of it by chopping into a short pixie. I love it. My natural colour turned out to be light brown, and the silver shimmers throughout it.

You're so brave. I too have a "blonde" bob ( natural color was chestnut). My hairdresser balks at cutting off my bob or at my going grey. The idea of a pixie is appealing and I may have to take a firm stance with her. Maybe short hair first and grey second.

Lovely haircut and a much more flattering profile photo though I did like the christmas shot of you with your specs on to.

I have my brows tinted and will keep that up for a while longer!
I think I have earned the right to go grey as I will be 58 next month! You'll know when you are ready!

I agree Margaret...trims are important especially with a shorter hair style.

I think the ends of my hair were dry too after months of colouring so going shorter was easy. It feels and looks much healthier too.

I stayed at home for the first 10 years when my children were small then went back to work part time...
I am looking forward to a new phase in my life.

Everyone love your new hairstyle. Me too! I think it just suits the personality I see so clearly on your blog. And the silver is really lovely in hair of a certain age...

That's a terrific cut, hostess. When considering growing grey, my hd suggested I take a grey sweater and put it on my head to see how I liked having less demarcation b/t my face and my hair. While that looks much worse than your chic cut ever would, it gives you some idea. There are also web sites where you can download you photo and change colour.

At some point, nearly every woman in North America decides to go grey or is not well enough to endure the maintenance. When I visited my mother in FL, I used to play a game when we went to church: try to spot anyone among the elder congregants with hair colour. But a friend just came back from Brazil and said she could not find a single woman of any age with grey hair.

I am hoping that I have hair the same colour as my Mother. Hers is a silver white and she keeps it looking good by using a special rinse for grey hair. It shines and looks healthy.

Love the new hairdo! I have talked about beginning to see what color my hair might grow out to be, but I just don't think I am there yet.

I stopped colouring my hair last february, it was getting pretty thin, and I was sick of the 4 weekly colouring marathon- it has almost grown out completely- I have a band of white all around my face which is quite interesting and behind that is a darker grey. I still get a shock when I get a reflection of myself, and loads of people don't recognize me!! I am 45 tomorrow and I know i look much much older when in my daggy house clothes- but the key is to have trendy arty clothes, which I have plenty of for work and out and about! absolutely no florals or older button up tucked in shirts with skirts around here!
