Ups and downs during the Pandemic...

Parrot tulips with chartreuse streaks...

Mother Nature could have painted these sweet flowers herself.

I love the modernist icy Tapio Wirkkala Finnish vases.

They cleverly camouflage the flower stems.

I cannot imagine my life without flowers.
Can You?

I suppose that is why I toil for hours in our garden.

Hopeful that seeds, tubers and bulbs will grow and flourish.

Gardening is a quiet hobby
one that offers many rewards.

Tending and creating a garden has so many benefits

fresh air
 exercise
nature
birdsong
bees
butterflies

"My extravagance is my garden -
it's the first thing I look at every morning when I wake up.
It gives me so much pleasure."

~ Ina Garten ~

Flowers have the power to elevate even the humblest of vessels...
from a jam jar to a crystal vase.

We are flying a new flag here in The Humble Bungalow.
It is flown in support and gratitude for the front line workers
who are helping us all stay safe during the pandemic.

We purchased this flag at The Victoria Flag Shop on Fort Street.

Each night at 7pm we are out banging pots and pans with our neighbours
to let the workers know that we are grateful for their work.

Current read Mary Coin by Marisa Silver
an interesting book so far and I am almost halfway through the story.

Am seriously looking for some book suggestions
as I am running out of books fast!

Hope that you are managing to stay safe and are feeling cozy in the comfort of your own home.

We are living through such unusual times...
some days are better than others.

I read that we might be modifying our way of life for the next couple of years.
Perhaps we will never go back to those carefree days?

Who knows?

We just have to take it one day at a time and do our best.

I miss so many things

family
friends
entertaining at home and being entertained at other peoples homes
our bridge games
knitting group meetings
sitting sipping coffee at the cafe
the freedom to go shopping and browse in a store
the local library and bookshops
the pool and yoga studio
lunching out with my gal friends
the spa and hair salon
dinners out with friends
going to the cottage
travel

My love affair....with roses

For many years I have loved and grown roses.
They are such beautiful flowers...
so many wonderful varieties
my favourite roses are those from David Austin.

Many of you who read and follow my Instagram page are inundated with photos of roses during the summer season.
I can't help myself from sharing the amazing blooms.

Growing and tending roses has become an all consuming addiction passion.

Today I am sharing my all time favourite rose Jude the Obscure...
I will let the pictures speak for themselves.

Look at those luscious frilly and frothy petals.

So many blooms!

In bud, bloom and overblown.
The three phases of Jude.

A veritable bouquet growing on the bush.

I can completely "lose myself" in the garden.

Troubles wash over me when I am in the garden tending to these beauties.

Hand watering is so soothing...
with
 hummingbirds and butterflies
flying in the mist at the edge of the spray.

Dead heading spent roses is a simple yet rewarding job.

Listening to the birdsong ~ a natural symphony.

Bees buzz as they collect pollen
a steady drone of deep reverberations.

At ease
the gentle rhythm of repeated movement
a mindful meditation
 tending to these jobs
when
working in the garden.

Gardening is a tonic to the soul.

Many gardens are created by people just like me.
We have a vision for natural beauty
enjoy the respite
that working in the dirt provides.

Do you have an all consuming passion?

Do you grow roses?

What is your favourite rose?

Until next time...
Thank you for popping by to visit The Humble Bungalow Blog.

"Getting my Happy On"

There are times when life tests us...
particularly when unexpected things occur
those things that are beyond our control...

I remind myself that "control is an illusion"...
the only things in life that one can control
are the reactions to the events themselves.

When these life events threaten to derail my day and drag me down
I need to dig deeper to cultivate and embrace the beauty that surrounds,
which in turn,
infuses positivity
encourages grace
which improves my outlook and ultimately is a mood changer.

Consciously choosing to focus on kindness, love, empathy, compassion
are the attitudes that I opt for when things go sideways.
I tend to focus on these things...

First and foremost....embracing the attitude of gratitude
followed by, but not necessarily in order...

arranging flowers
working in the garden
reading an inspiring book
chatting with a good friend
painting or a similar creative pursuit
going for a walk along the seafront
knitting
taking tea...using a lovely bone china teacup and loose tea
cooking a new recipe
yoga
soaking in the tub in some scented bath salts
watching a classic "chick flick"
tidying up an area of our home
tidying up a drawer or closet
doing something for someone who needs help
writing ( a blog post) or writing in a journal
cooking a pot of soup
beach combing
browsing in a book shop
thrift shopping
donating to charity
volunteering

There are many positive nurturing habits to cultivate...
what are your favourites?

"Three grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do,
something to love, and something to hope for. "

~ Joseph Addison ~

Summertime BBQ's with best friends and family
sharing a simple meal
fresh produce and food of the season
sipping a crisp cool glass of Rose
dining outdoors in the hot sunshine
listening to the laughter
of
the children playing in the garden
filling up my heart
with
JOY.

Hope that your week is full of bright moments.
