Week of wild weather...

Beeswax candles glowing...
adding ambiance on a frigid cold day.

Very snowy here these past few days...
not a lot of accumulation in The Humble Bungalow Garden.
Other areas of Victoria have a LOT more!
Schools were closed, traffic was snarled, buses got stuck.

Mr HB and I stayed home.
I read books, played word games on the computer,
knit a few rows on The Sophie Scarf,
decluttered and cooked.

Chester seems unfazed by the snow.
He is an indoor cat so he isn't really affected by the weather.
He has been taking advantage of having Mr. HB home...he's snoozing on his lap!

Chester asleep on the cat blanket.

I make soup for many of our lunches.

This spice was in a French Country Home subscription box.
It is made by Compagnie Francaise...
peppers, turmeric, oregano, thyme, curcumin, paprika, sage, basil, tamarind, onion, cinnamon.

The Christmas Cactus is still in bloom!
I bought this orange cactus recently...I love the bright shade of orange.

Here I am just before my Aqua Fit class....
no make up, just lipstick.

My decades old Burberry scarf, Columbia Puffer coat and a hand knit gift hat.
The Sally Hansen Insta Dri nail polish matches one of the stripes!!

Post swim relaxation.

Reading an interesting book by Lesley Crewe called Amazing Grace.
I have not read her books before but I am really enjoying this one.

What are you reading?

The weekly sourdough boule baking is still very much part of my routine.
I keep the sourdough starter active stored in the fridge.
The recipe I use I found online at Alexandra Bakes.

Cooking, baking, cleaning all these things happen here in The Humble Bungalow.
I accomplish a lot everyday but I intersperse the jobs with rest and tea.

I've been wearing these pink gloves to wash the dishes.
They are help my manicure last longer!

What is the weather like where you live?
We aren't used to snow so any amount can mess with the commutes of workers.
It makes getting around much more difficult...especially when the buses are stuck!

Tomorrow the forecast is for warmer temperatures and rain.
I think the snow will melt quite quickly and we will all resume our normal activities.

I plan to get out for some groceries and perhaps peruse a thrift shop or two.

Have you found any treasures recently in the shops?
I go into shops with an open mind and look at all the stock...
if I go in with a certain item in mind I find that I feel stress.

You never know what is waiting in the thrift and charity shops!

OOTD ~ vintage classics

~ OOTD ~

Burberry quilted jacket
Dex lace top
Eileen Fisher rayon pants
Ferragamo flats

Vintage eel skin bag
a mix of textures...
shiny, quilted, lacy, smooth
neutral shades

I shopped my closet...
for a celebratory birthday dinner out with our daughter and her husband.

I haven't forgotten "how" to dress up
I am just "out of the habit!"

Gosh it felt wonderful going out for a delicious meal prepared by someone else
and
I didn't have to do the washing up!

Our garden is looking quite lovely.
Flowers are blooming, the grass is green and the roses are in bud.

There is so much to be grateful for in my daily round...

Chester our cat had surgery last week to remove a stone from his bladder.
He was very wobbly the first day and has continued to improve.
His appetite has come back and he has already gained weight.

I had been so very stressed with his failing health and am so relieved that we finally got a diagnosis and that surgery would fix the problem.

His early renal failure is going to be monitored closely,
we will continue to feed him the special food.
Hopefully he will be with us for a few more years.

He's such an affectionate little guy and has a very "big" personality.

In other news,
I had my third IPL treatment for rosacea,
my skin is looking much better.
The treatments are not too painful but they are expensive.

I purchased a skin repair cream by Skin Medica.
It is a rich thick cream that I apply before bedtime.
It soaks in and I have noticed my skin is much softer and hydrated.

Herbs are planted in pots by the basement door for easy picking.

I ordered a new Pasta cookbook and plan to try some new recipes.
My husband loves pasta and I make it once a week.

The book is an older publication, I found it at Thrift Books.

Healthy Pasta: The Sexy, Skinny, and Smart Way To Eat Your Favourite Food
It is written by Joseph Bastianich and Tanya Bastianich Manuali

Going to try a bunch of new recipes when it arrives.

How are things going with you?

Tea time, a french chic book and a drug store purchase...

Afternoon Tea in The Humble Bungalow

Canterbury pattern cup and saucer
one of several patterns of tea cups that I use for my afternoon tea ritual.
I am on the lookout for a spectacular ornately decorated floral cup and saucer.

Reading an inspirational French themed book by Tish Jett
I read and enjoyed her first book Forever Chic.

A lovely tea from our local Tea Merchant Murchies
Paris Afternoon is sweet and tastes like a decadent dessert.

My last mascara was gloppy and had not performed that well.
Frustrated,
but on a mission
off I went to the local pharmacy to buy a new mascara.
Always one to seek advice from the knowledgeable gals in the cosmetics department
I asked the clerk what she uses and could recommend.

Marcelle was her hands down winning performer.

She handed me the gift pack that included a Kohl eye pencil.
This pencil is SO soft and easily lines the eye without tugging or pulling.
It is rather like Velvet Gel.

So now I am regularly defining my eyes with Kohl
and they are the focus when wearing my mask.

New Year Goal

walk a minimum of 4 km each and every day

I've downloaded the Walk Meter App which is free and helps me track my distance.
The IPhone tracking is not that accurate but it does record the individual steps.
So I am using both to keep tabs on my progress.

Do you have any New Year resolutions or goals?

My winter accessories
consist of
a cashmere scarf and a vintage Coach bag.

Do you switch out your handbag often?
I am a creature of habit and frequently use one for years...

I  have other bags.

A straw bag for summer
a vintage wine coloured quilted bag
a travel bag
a small vintage black Coach bag for evening.

Hope that you are staying safe.

Our provincial doctor has just extended our Covid restrictions until February.
Our numbers of new cases continue to go up...
hundreds are in hospital with many in critical care.

I'm going to have to get creative to help pass the time.
Another month of not seeing my grandchildren and family is going to be difficult.

I walk with a friend each week but we stay a safe distance from each other.

How are you coping?

Thank you for popping by The Humble Bungalow Blog.

Painting the town red...

I am seeing red everywhere I go...

from the innocent shelf in the pharmacy

to the red cup...

 Essie Jag-U-Are red nails

the red stripe in my Burberry scarf

The red fire engine that was called to our hotel when we had to evacuate
(it was a false alarm)

dinner out at our favourite Indian fusion restaurant

curried lamb popsicles served on a bed of potatoes
beef curry and kale
naan bread

I had an entire day to spend in Vancouver while Mr. HB was on course.

I walked for hours browsing and exploring the shops.
One blue top...on sale.

a pair of NYDJ boyfriend style jeans
(I LOVE THESE)

a wee bit of a splurge

I needed to stop for a break after 4 hours...

lettuce wrap
shrimp, crab, coleslaw and a few crunchy noodles

I bought this Hermes fragrance after discovering it in Paris when I was there...
it is a soft feminine scent that I quite love.
(the bottle is refillable)

I love a getaway where I can browse and shop...
and we came home
to a date night at the theatre

A Fabulous production
in the meantime...

OOTD and some budget friendly ideas

My "new to me" thrifted cognac coloured vintage Due Fratelli bag inspired me to take out my old Burberry jacket which I have not worn for ages.

This jacket was an "investment" piece.
I purchased it when I was working.

It was worn almost every chance I got when it was new
but of late it has languished in the closet.

I have a weakness when it comes to coats and jackets...
Quite a few are in hanging my wardrobe, a mix of casual and dressy.
Some new and others thrifted.

Walking jackets make up a good portion of these and there are a few cold weather down options in the closet too.
A priority for me "being prepared for all kinds of weather."

~ OOTD ~
Burberry jacket, NYDJ, Jessica Simpson flats, Due Fratelli bag

what you cannot see is the
thrifted crisp white shirt by Northern Reflections and my baroque pearl necklace.

"Retirement dressing"
Mixing high and low priced pieces help me stay within a budget.
I have a book where I record all the garments that I purchase so I can keep track of my expenditures.
It is surprising how it adds up!

My retirement budget also requires me to mix high and low priced cosmetics and skincare products.

The newest items in my arsenal of products...
Jane Iredale Dream Tint with an SPF of 15
100% natural Brilliant Lip Shimmer by Burts' Bees in Cherry
I love a pop of red in the Fall and Winter.

this is not a sponsored post
opinions are mine, and are posted for the convenience of my readers

I switched from the powdered Jane Iredale foundation to the tinted moisturizer
it adds a soft glow and boosts moisture levels
works with my dry skin.

The Brow Drama is like mascara for the eyebrows...
I have found that a spa eyebrow tint lasts only a few weeks
then the coarse white hairs are visible again...
This product is under $10 and lasts for months.

Spa visits are few and far between...
pedicures in sandal season and possibly one or two facials each year.
While I love the pampering I cannot afford to indulge as often as I would like.

I have fun doing my own facials.
Often I will dedicate a morning to some self care
using products similar to those available at the spa.

This red rose looks so pretty against the soft yellow siding of our neighbours' home.

Thankfully the wild storm that was predicted did not hit us as hard as we expected.

The book that I have been waiting for at the library arrived!
In the spirit of thrift I have been reserving books at the library instead of purchasing every book that I want to read...

Hope you are having a fun weekend.

Are you saving for something special?
Do you try to live within your budget?

Thank you for stopping by my humble blog.

Beauty...in the eye of the beholder.

I've been so fortunate to find such beauty in my daily round.

These pretty leaves hugging a concrete wall near Oak Bay Avenue.

The blue coloured berries stood out against the grey concrete.
How could I just walk by and not capture this image?
They are sumptuous and stunning...almost sensual.

A sweetly scented and frothy yellow rose blooms in Our Humble Bungalow Garden.
I love those wee dewdrops on the petals...
Mother Nature paints such a beautiful picture on our planet.

I've been enjoying the silver arm party bangles this past week.
Always the crow...drawn to shiny things...
I'd buy more bangles if I found some that "spoke to me."

The grand children and I had "lunch" together!

Nom Nom!

I've been wearing this Burberry print scarf most days.
I love the simple infinity style.
This Chanel Orchidee lipstick picks up the colour in the pattern of the scarf

It's an easy tie...
place over head, twist front twice around and then loop the open circle around your head.
Voila!

I've been spritzing on my "winter scent."
I just read that this is Ines de la Fressange's signature fragrance!

For daily pictures please follow me on Instagram...
click the picture of the Hydrangea on my side bar and you can view my IG page.

There's not a lot happening to report...thank you for popping by.
Hope that your week is ticking along nicely.
