On the Hostess's Bookshelf...

Summertime reading has always been a luxurious pleasure.
One that I could hardly wait for when I was working...
When school would let out for summer I would eagerly peruse the shelf laden with books.
I'd read the book jackets and then decide which one to start reading...
you might have gathered that I collect books just for summertime reading.
I find them at thrift shops, garage sales and of course, our wonderful local book stores.

A fun light read, one that would make a good cottage or beach book.

I picked up this book mark at Chapters...
I usually use a piece of paper as I never turn down the corners of the pages...
having worked in a library for many years that habit does not sit well with me at all.

Chester thought it was a cat toy!

Here are just a few of the books that sit on the shelf waiting...

It took me a long time to read The Time Traveler's Wife because we were travelling at the time I was reading it and had so many interruptions and I could never just pick it up where I left off because of the time travel involved...I am hoping this one is easier to follow.

Mother liked this but thought it "a bit of a different book"

On my toes today I am sporting Embarca dare you by OPI
a hot pink shade that shimmers with light.
Pedicures are a summertime luxury and one that I indulge in as sandal season is hard on the feet.

I am so grateful to have a wonderful gal who helps keep my feet in good shape.
I cannot do my toes anymore as I have poor eyesight and find it a challenge to bend over and paint with precision!

What books do you have set aside for your summertime reading?

TGIF it's Friday!
It will be a busy weekend...
a baby shower, a short boat trip and a potluck supper.

Whatever you have planned I hope you make some time to relax and put your feet up.

  1. I agree that reading is such a pleasure. Here's a book I can heartily recommend: In the Sanctuary of Outcasts:

    1. I have no idea why my post above has weird spacing.

    2. Susan thank you for that suggestion...I have added the title to my read list.

  2. I just had a friend visit to pick up some books as she is on strike. I am not moving quickly through my books right now as I seem distracted.I collect bookmarks from independent bookstores that I visit in my travels. I had my pedicure this week and I so enjoy having groomed feet. I can't really paint my own toes either. I enjoyed Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. My brother recommended The Bones of Paris. Have you heard of it? Bon week-end!

    1. I have not heard of that title will make a note and explore it...merci beaucoup.

  3. Hello Hostess,

Aren't pedicures great! And OPI has some delightful colours . I like to have a pedicure done before a trip. A pedicure is always a special joy and one of those wonderful ways of caring for ourselves.

On a recent getaway, I was delighted to find some books (fiction) by Frank Delaney. Here are the first two sentences from the book, Venetia Kelly's Traveling Show. "She sprang from the womb and waved to the crowd. Then she smiled and took a bow."

The author's way with words is simply magical. The sheer beauty of his apt and arresting expression of a thought brings a smile on every page . . . some pages fairly sparkle with them. I haven't yet found his book, Ireland, but I'm on the lookout for it. I'm sure it's a treasure, too. Until then, I'll savor the two I have.

Enjoy your boat trip. That's one of my favourite things about summer. Can't wait to get up to cottage country and out on the lake.

May your summer bring you delicious adventures and many fond memories.

    Honey Bee

    1. Honey Bee...I love those two sentences...Frank Delaney is on my watch list.
Enjoy your summer at the cottage...

  4. I have a hard time painting my toes with precision now too :( I had my summer time pedicure done just before my niece's wedding a couple weeks ago too. I usually go for a pinky red, but this time I went for a bright purple to match my dress. Love your colour from OPI :) Where do you go to do yours?
We've got a busy weekend too...Grandpuppy staying with us all weekend, wine tasting on Saturday, my brother & his wife coming over, heading downtown for Jazz Fest on Sunday and our son coming for dinner on Sunday night :) Enjoy your weekend!!

    1. Bliss in Cadboro Bay Village...shhh it is a secret as they are so wonderful.

  5. I loved The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Frye, you have lots of great books there to read ~ enjoy!

  6. Have only read The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. Liked that. Professional pedicures seem to last longer too. I just had one done and she did a hot stone massage on my calves -- lovely! Enjoy your weekend!

    1. OOH La stone massages are the ultimate in pampering...lucky you!

  7. Love your pretty tootsies, have to action myself a pedi today, nothing picks you up like that does it? i am just about to do a trip to bookshop so have noted these down, I am an obsessive reader and If I'm onto a good book, all else gets left in the dust. What a great title for a book (we'll always have paris, just saw the movie recently and its still as fresh and compelling and perfect as it always was.)

  8. Leslie, you will love "The Unlikley Pilgramage of Harold Fry".
Now that's a fabulous colour of Nail polish !
    Hugs, L

  9. Thanks for sharing what you are reading. I am looking forward to "beach reading" and have picked up some 'real, turn the page' books...Looking for Me by Beth Hoffman, Beautiful Day by Erin Hilderbrand, and Under Magnolia by Frances Mayes. Happy Summer!!

  10. After seeing it here, I placed a hold on the eBook "We'll Always Have Paris" through my library system. I look forward to it; thank you!
