Blue Jeans...a desert island wardrobe MUST!

Have you got a favourite pair of jeans?
Are you fond of denim? Did you know it was first made in France?

Many many pairs of jeans have been in my wardrobe since I was a teen.
First there were Levis, and Lees, Wranglers, and GWG's...
and many other brands whose names I cannot recall.
There were the dressier "grown up jeans" from Ralph Lauren, Liz Claiborne, and DKNY.

Jeans are such a basic that I think they deserve a place of honour.
I wear jeans most days now that I have retired.
I have 4 pairs of jeans and 1 pair of black dress pants in my winter wardrobe....does that tell you something?
Well my lifestyle has changed as well as my wardrobe...dressy events are few and far between and I don't need to dress for work anymore.

In the past 5 years I have fallen hard for jeans from The Gap and it is quite possibly that they make an ankle version for height challenged women like myself.
I have never been very successful finding a tailor who is adept at shortening jeans.
I like how they look straight from the factory...or if they are only a bit too long I'll turn them up and wear them cuffed with booties, ballet flats or loafers.

Enter the boyfriend jeans for which I am smitten...seriously I love them!
I don't think I am too old for them at least that's what I say to myself when I see all those  younger women wearing them in the street.
Sadly I have parted with those wonderfully soft Vera Wang jeans ~ post weight loss they were far too baggy and would slip down over my hips. Not being the rapper type of dresser they HAD to go. I hope they have made some woman very happy!

I bought a pair of boyfriend jeans from the Gap in a smaller size when I started to lose weight.
That was months ago, early in my weight loss journey and they they were my first purchase.
Then they got too big so it was off to the donation bag...then a thrifted pair in a size 10 and they are long gone too to join their larger cousins.

Enter the new jean...
the sexy boyfriend jean and they fit.
Does that make me a 6?
(I don't think so, more like an 8)

in dark denim, not too distressed, no rips or tears

Here is how I am styling them today...
white Lands' End tank top
navy Lands' End cashmere sweater
chunky bubble gum pearls

spotty sox
Timberland booties

OOTD
Mother, Sister and I are off for a stroll on the Esplanade
and we'll be having dinner together.
Sis is making a kale salad and I am thinking of a sockeye salmon fillet.

"I have often said that I wish I had invented blue jeans: the most spectacular, the most practical, the most relaxed and nonchalant. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity - all I hope for in my clothes."

~ Yves Saint Laurent ~

What brand of jeans are you fond of wearing?
Would they make your desert island list?
How many pairs of jeans do you own?
(Our darling daughter once calculated that she had 22 pairs of jeans in her closet!)

Enjoy your week.

No, I definitely don't see you as the rapper type of dresser, LOL! I have a LOT of jeans, but Gap is probably my favourite brand too. As I shop the thrift stores, I always try and keep an open mind. That being said, if I see a pair of GAP jeans, I do an little inner squeek!

Hostess, jeans are the best! 4 jeans + 4 tanks = super wardrobe. :) Or 4 tees.

Just two pairs of jeans - one Gap and one Ann Taylor. In the winter I wear cords more than jeans. I have a Calvin Klein pair that I like. Not working does mean a different kind of wardrobe, doesn't it?

I own far too many pairs... in many price ranges. My favourites are from Next, J Brand, Seven For All Mankind and Citizens of Humanity. I also haven't bought a pair in ages on account of how many I already own.

I wear them most of the time, too- they look good and are washable. (Bye-bye cleaning bills!) A plus for the ankle jean is that they ride above our snowy streets, mostly. Full-length get splattered with corrosive salt. I wear NYJD and Talbot's. Talbots jeans fit me and when there is a sale, I buy multiples. Good for you, it's fun to wear a smaller size though in my case i have definitely found some vanity sizing out there.

Being retired I wear mostly denims on a daily basis. The cat fur also doesn't stick to them like it does to cords or most dress pants. I prefer dark denim type trousers that I get from LL Bean. I don't feel comfortable with all of the pockets that are on the original style. Here in Toronto I see just as many women wearing black yoga style pants as jeans.

You know how I feel about jeans, boyfriend jeans, and the GAP! Big thumbs up.

I LOVE boyfriend jeans...even though my husband can't stand them on me.
I only wear Gap BFs because they are the only ones that fit me decently. I think I have four pairs of BFs and another 5 or 6 skinnies. I have one really destroyed and faded pair of BFs that most people would say a 46 yo should never wear but I don't care. I love them! They are not only super cute but very comfortable, too.

I pretty much wear only jeans. I love Gap BF's. I have a few pairs, and I do wear the lighter wash that's all deconstructed. I'm 61 and don't feel I'm too old to be wearing them. I wear skinny jeans when we go out to dinner, and black skinnies for "dressy" occasions!

For skinnies, I wear J.Brand 811's.

I have 3 pairs of jeans from Chicos (dark denim, darker denim, and black) but on your recommendation, I'm going to try the sexy boyfriend jeans at Gap. I haven't been in that store for a long time. I wear jeans quite often too, especially when I work from home.

Oops that is NYDJ but I think you know that!

I have NYDJ, Cookie Johnson, Jag, Citizens, but Eileen Fischer are my current favorites. I wore gap jeans many years ago and apparently need to try them again!! Thanks of or the tip! I refuse to admit how many pairs of jeans I own, on the grounds that I may incriminate myself :)

I have far too many jeans, and oddly enough I rarely wear them; preferring dresses, skirts and trousers. My favourite, these days is the Ann Taylor Modern Boot Cut.

I am mostly wearing skinny jeans from the Loft or boyfriend jeans from Old Navy. I wear them with booties, tucked into boots or for a really casual with Converse. Like you, I need them in a petite length. I don't think that age has anything to do with wearing jeans ~ thank goodness!

I just wish I could wear that size 28 that you are sporting! I find NYDJ to be the best look for me and are sooo comfortable! Carolyn

A pair of skinny jeans from Costco (gasp!), a pair for gardening, a black pair for work and a gorgeous-fitting pair from Jones New York. I wear pants every day for work and live in leggings at home on the weekends. Once again, however, you have inspired me to look at my jeans and to give them a little more zip.

I have a pair of dark denim Jag jeans, and 2 three-quarter leg mid-blue jeans for summer, one Jag and the other from Target of all places. I find I don't often wear the summer ones because I don't like myself in T-shirts as I feel too 'busty' with a big bust and small waist. A bit too Dolly Parton for me. Mostly I'm more comfortable in a dress for work and black pants around the house with various tops or exercise wear if I'm cleaning. Tonkath

Second the skinny jeans from Costco. Dark rinse, fit well, excellent price ($25) and replaceable. They look great crushed at the ankle with my Bean Boots.
But for spring/summer (in Victoria!!) I am packing the BF jeans (LL Bean). With a navy polka dot button down and a pale green tweed jacket and that favourite strand of pearls. M.

The Gap runs very true to size, and congratulations Hostess on a size 6!

Great post Hostess! Jeans are a universal wardrobe staple for a lot of us. In recent years I have bought Diesel jeans and love the fit.

You are so right Hostess - jeans are the best! I've been wearing them since I was 14, and I'm 61 now. I love styling them in different ways and have tried all the cuts, but have always preferred a darker wash. I love them to fade the way I wear them rather than a manufactured distressed look.
I love your blog and drop in for most posts.

Congratulations on the downsizing :) I wear jeans most of the time since I work in a very casual environment. Once I found the BF's there was no going back! I wear the Old Navy cropped slim and get either long or tall for winter jeans. Regular in summer since they are above ankle and look great with sandals. I have white for summer and they are heavily distressed - love them. Very inexpensive - recent sale the cost was $15 w/discount so I stocked up on them. Both lightly distressed and darker. I agree with Kathy, I don't think we are ever to old for BF's or any other jean. I am of the opinion that you should wear what you are comfortable wearing. Everyone has their own style. If you look great in a fitted leopard print dress go for it regardless of age. I only wish I looked great in a fitted leopard print dress :)

I squeek a bit too....but very quietly!

Retirement dressing is so different...casual yes but I always strive to be neat and pulled together even when I am staying at home all day.

Those are high end jeans SSG! I've never had a really luxe pair but with my short stature they would be way too long so I've never really considered them.

I wear dark wash skinny jeans going out too...

I like a V neck tee for the same reason...don't want anyone singing Hello Dolly when they see me !

I also love the U neck tank tops under a V neck cardigan...give those a test drive and see if you feel comfortable in them.

You'll be glad you packed them M!
I forgot did I mention Abkhazi Gardens as a place for tea?
We might want to meet there one afternoon when the gardens are in full flower and stay for tea....just a thought!

Dear Hostess, Loved this! Yes, fun to look back on jeans of the past. I particularly remember wanting Gloria Vanderbilts with the swan, and later in my teens Guess ones. Wow, terrific you have gotten in such great shape. I also am loving the Gap jeans right now. I was just looking at the Sexy Boyfriends the other day. I will have to give them a try. My other favorites from there are the Legging Jean which is actually really comfy for a skinny jean. My favorites though are always the boyfriend types for everyday for comfort!
Love your cute outfit, sock and booties!

Sounds terrific! I am just getting things organized now. Four transitional months is hard to pack for, not to mention the logistics of my family and job on the East Coast. But (and my mother said never to start a sentance with 'but') the flights are booked and the excitement is building...

Yes, that's the look I go for usually but when it's hot like it is now, the cardigan has to come off! We have been having sustained heat waves this summer. 36 degrees today, tomorrow and forty on Saturday. (I think that's well over 100 degrees) and next week more of the same. I find that silky tops with a bit of a gather work well too. You are looking amazing. Tonkath

I love the jeans from Calypso. I think they are made by AG. They fit great, don't stretch out, and tuck nicely into boots. Love this post!

Jeans are my favorite. It is so easy to pull together a lovely outfit for most occasions based on the right pair of jeans. Gap jeans are my favorites, too ... in my case I need the long length to fit my freakishly long legs. Most do mine came from the outlet, and were on sale to boot. Others are from second hand stores.

On a trip to T J Maxx, I discovered DKNY skinny jeans in colors. They fit perfectly, look great with flats or flip flops, and tuck nicely into boots. If you want to try skinnies, give these a look.
