A Smashing time...

Frozen shoulder has made life a bit frustrating for the Hostess of The Humble Bungalow...
my range of motion is limited and so typing and knitting have been virtually curtailed.

I have been meaning to sit down and write a post but I have had a series of appointments and a few mishaps that have kept me hopping.

Someone decided to take their anger out on my windshield.

It was a smashing day all around...

it reminds me of that song
"if I had a hammer I'd hammer in the morning I'd hammer in the evening..."

I met friends for lunch and parked in an open lot close by the restaurant and when I returned I was actually gobsmacked by what I saw...
and I still wonder
WHY?
It seems to me to be a senseless act of vandalism.

But let's move on shall we?

I did want to brighten your day by showing you some of the beautiful orchids from The Victoria Orchid Society Show.

I am still enjoying The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton...
it has been a godsend having a novel to take my mind off of my troubles and to give me something to focus on as I wait in the medical offices.

I really wish I could be knitting...

at least I can still play bridge
  Meg
(whom I adore)
is the 94 year old bridge player
who continues to inspire me
had fabulous cards this week...we were "on fire"
we bid and made a small slam!

I am so grateful for the small joys and simple things in life.

Have yourself a fabulous weekend!
Be Well and Be Kind.

I'm hoping your shoulder responds quickly to treatment and physical therapy. I had one orthopedic doctor tell me that physical therapy doesn't really help this condition. He was WRONG!. I've had it twice and switched to a shoulder specialist the second time. Physical therapy AND a shot right into the joint (not just into the shoulder) worked together to help my shoulder heal. I'll be hoping for the same for you, Hostess. Your knitting is lovely! And, so sorry about your car's windshield. Thank you for the beautiful photos of the orchids. It looks like you have been having fun in spite of adversities.

You will knit again soon - I am sure of it.
So sorry to read about the vandalism to your car. It is an awful feeling to be 'chosen' randomly by someone bent on destruction.
Which orchid did you buy?

Beautiful orchid shots! I didn't realize you were away from him when your car was vandalized...were you able to drive it home? I find I'm asking myself what is wrong with people more and more lately.
I hope you find some relief for your shoulder soon! That cape is going to be fabulous!

I hope your shoulder heals quickly...it's frustrating when we can't do what we are used to being able to do. I had a rotater cuff problem at one time that cramped my style. The photos of the orchards are so fascinating to me. Some of them look almost like sea creatures. Nature is a truly marvelous thing! Enjoy your book. I am reading The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window and Disappeared. I think it is the craziest book I've ever read!

What beautiful orchids! I hope that your shoulder problem gets cured quickly. It is definitely
unpleasant to be unable to move freely. Vandalism is nasty. We had our side window broken in our parking garage just a couple of weeks before I left. I'm reading another Elena Ferrante book, the last in the Neapolitan series. I just read that a European television series is being produced based on the books. Take care and enjoy the week-end.

The orchids are stunning and I hope their beauty soothed your shoulder and the photos ease the blow of the window damage.

I have tendonitis in my right shoulder, it's been over a year since I aggravated it and it's not healed:(. But, it's better, and the discomfort can be managed. I hope your issues heal up all the way, in not too long a time. What, if I can ask, are the symptoms? What is frozen shoulder, exactly?

From Margie in Toronto - so sorry about the vandalism - it really comes as a shock to the system doesn't it? You truly wonder what makes a person do something like that.

Also sorry to hear about the shoulder - I had a rotator cuff tear a couple of years back that had to be surgically repaired and it was just so frustrating not being able to do some of the simplest things - I hope it gets sorted soon.

The photos of the orchids are beautiful - they really are amazing flowers aren' t they? I read "The Orchid Thief" a few years ago - all about the obsession that folks have with them - it was a really good book and had so much about the history of the flower. Have you read it by any chance?

I'm sorry about your car window and the frozen shoulder. Beautiful pictures of orchids. Love the shawl - anxious to see you model it :-) Sending healing thoughts.

I think of you every day. The 2nd year after I retired we took a mini-vacation which included a couple of day long walking tours. Afterwards I suffered from a "frozen shoulder", could not left anything very heavy nor could I raise my arm very high. Hard to style my hair, cook, etc. Relied heavily on my other arm. My doc prescribed steroids to lessen swelling & pain. 1 year later it finally returned to normal, I could sleep again, play corn hole, apply deodorant & blow dry my hair. With time I hope your life will return to normal too. Best wishes across the miles!

Wishing you a speedy recovery and rehabilitation with your shoulder, L!

I am so sorry to hear about the horrible thing that happened to your car. Hope it gets fixed quickly.

How horrible to have your car window smashed in such a way, I'm sorry that happened to you. I've had that happen and it's frustrating and so senseless.
Your shoulder, it doesn't sound very good at all. I don't know very much about that condition except that Miranda Esmonde-White discusses it quite a bit when doing range of motion exercises on some of her workouts, it's very painful apparently so I'm sorry for that. I hope yours heals rapidly. In the meantime take care and thanks for sharing the stunning photos of those orchids. XO

Just realized that I should post this on the blog vs. a personal email but your scone recipe is a winner! We should all try it. And such a terrible act of vandalism that windshield bashing. Who does that sort of thing?

La Vie Quotidienne said...

Oh! Your poor car, how senseless.

I hope your shoulder feels better soon, it must be very frustrating not to be able to do the things you want to do.

My husband and I have dubbed this year "The Year of Minor Annoyances" so far. Happy they are just minor but it seems every day there has been some little issue health or house wise. Best Wishes!

Boo, hiss, and a pox on the vandal! Love the orchids and all that you project to us in your blog.

I am sorry to hear about your shoulder. This is very hard for a high energy person like you. With a good MD, this should be resolved! You have no time for a frozen shoulder! The orchids are spectacular. I hope you came home with one. Orchid flowers last for months vs. a bouquet that lasts for a week or ten days, at best. Senseless vandalism is disappointing. There is no answer. It is random. I hope you are feeling better today. All the best, Susan

I have heard good things from people who have had therapy and the shots.
Making time for fun is essential for one's well being...I try to incorporate some into each and every day.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Pondside I came home empty handed...I currently have a window sill full of orchids and they are all blooming. If I had taken the earliest shift I might have found a gem as many were sold by the time my shift was finished.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I was in a parking lot which was open and nearby lots of office buildings and shops...someone must have seen something but we'll never know and now that it is repaired I have to move on...I did drive it home and after for a couple of days until the new windshield arrived for installation.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

It is amazing how many women experience these injuries...everyone seems to have a story or know someone who has had this issue.
I enjoyed that book too...very light and entertaining.

Horrible to read about this attack on your windshield. Hopefully there was a security camera that could help find out who did it? It's not like you live in a dangerous city.

Frozen shoulder is not fun. I thought I had a rotator cuff tear, until the massage therapist at the spa I have my nails done, told me I have "frozen shoulder." She helped me in two weeks, go from agony to slightly annoying pain. She is a miracle worker!
I really believe I would still be in pain, and may have needed surgery. I still have a very , very slight resistance to raising my left arm as high as my right; but I don't even notice it or complain of any pain.
You may want to consider finding a massage therapist? I hope you find relief.

I look forward to the TV series..the books are wonderful.
Oh and sorry to hear about your window mishap...it seems to be a common event.
We had a fun weekend celebrating our son's 35th birthday...hope you are keeping cool under that hot Mexican sun!

Orchids do raise one's spirits... flowers are a tonic to a lot of ails.

I remember when you had that issue with your shoulder...it is not great news hearing that it has not healed.
Frozen shoulder has several stages...the freezing, the freeze and the thawing.
The Mayo Clinic has info on it if you are interested in more detail.
I am in constant pain...unable to move my arm sideways or behind my back or above my head. Unable to sleep much because of the pain and unable to sleep on my side...the muscles are in spasm as they are all tensed up, so massage is hopefully going to help...I am optimistic.
Will let you know as I proceed.

I am so sorry to hear about your shoulder and your windshield. I don't understand vandalism. I hope you are feeling better soon. Have a great week. Hugs!

I read The Orchid Thief! I borrowed it from the Victoria Orchid Society library a few years ago. It is fascinating what collectors will do to get that special orchid!
Vandalism is not something that I expected...I do empathize with people who are having a tough time...kindness and a smile go a long way but they do not help pay the bills or put food on the table or a roof overhead...we have lots of people in our city who experiencing hardship and addictions.

I am excited to get back to knitting and I will share the finished product with you when I can. Thank you for your kind words.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Babette....you know what it is like!
I thank you for sharing your personal story and hope that your shoulder is completely healed...what is corn hole?

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

The car is fixed SSG and soon I will get more treatment on my shoulder...these things take longer than replacing a windshield!

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Thank you I am going to google Miranda and see if I can learn a bit more about her exercises...the car thing was just so unexpected...but it is fixed now...and aren't the orchids enchanting?

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I am so glad you enjoyed the recipe...your breakfast scones look delicious!
I popped over to your blog and read a few of your posts...thank you for stopping by The Humble Bungalow!

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Oh I know...things like gardening....although I did manage to vacuum with my left hand!

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Oh that sounds like the title of a novel...hope your year improves.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I love those words...Boo Hiss and Pox!
My words verged on rude...not at all what I am proud of uttering.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

No orchid this time but I do have a full shelf of orchids above my sink and they are all blooming! I heartily agree about the value of an orchid vs. a bouquet.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I reported it to the company that runs the parking lot and they asked me to phone the police...I know of no camera as it was open street level parking.
I am booked into massage with an RMT and hope it will help...the doctor said I need to do a variety of therapies and keep moving it even though it hurts.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Thank you Bonnie...we had a fun weekend with our family.
Hope you have a great week too!

Sorry to hear about the shoulder and the windshield! Hope you have a speedy recovery with the shoulder! By the way, the dark gray knitted cape looks nice and I'm wondering what it looks like at the back (it looks longer than the front from the picture). Is it just like a knitted tube? The direction of the stitches on your work/tube looks vertical whereas in the picture they look horizontal? I'm thinking of making one! Claire

BeachGypsy said...

Oh those orchid pictures are beautiful! You got some really great ones! How is your shoulder today? How are they treating it? Hope you feel better soon!

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Go to Church Mouse Yarns site and you can see it in more detail...it is knit in a reversible rib pattern and is basically a rectangle that is grafted together to finish the edge and make it totally reversible.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Massage, exercises and physio...and hopefully some cortisone when I an appointment comes up at the specialists clinic. It is sore but I managed to do laundry, clean the fridge and am going to go to the hairdressers and have my hair cut in a wash and wear style as I cannot hold the blow dryer or shampoo using my right hand!
Just taking all this stuff in stride and hoping for the best...what else is there to do?

Jean S said...

well, exactly. You do what you can....

Still, that smashed window is a bummer!

Oh poor you but it sounds like you are dealing with the pain, the difficulties and the disruption in a pragmatic way. Well done you. Perhaps an osteopath could help with your painful shoulder, mine sorts out my pain when needed. And sorry to hear of your windscreen issue, such a senseless act, leaving you with a lot to sort out. A Swedish blogger I read also had a smashed windscreen at the weekend in Stockholm, with car contents stolen. What a world we live in.

Linda Pakravan said...

Hope the therapy is helping your shoulder. A smashed windshield...hard to imagine someone being so angry, or stupid! Hope your glass replacement is done soon.

Thanks! Approximately how many balls of yarn did you use? Approximately what length and width is the rectangle? Thank you for getting my interest in knitting started again, haha! I haven't knitted for so long!

Oh, it's ok, I found the info. Thanks just the same.

So sorry about the vandalism. When we lived in the city, our car was broken into a lot and one day someone stole our sidewalk (it was an expensive stone, I gather.) So senseless. It makes you wonder about people. I always want to hug kindergarten kids enough so they don't grow up to be meanies. xo
