Domestics...and a rant!

Domestics are not always fun, but they are rewarding.
Domestic Divas want us to believe that there is such Glamour in Cleaning.
I agree to a point.

Glovely...
she's a cheery yellow "helping hand" in The Humble Bungalow!

Have you tried the Method line of products?
My favourite "partner in grime" is this grapefruit cleanser.
It really makes light work of dirty jobs.

I use more of this all purpose cleaner than any other product.
It smells wonderful too.

I have discovered that the scrub I have been using for years is no longer available in Canada.
I am stumped as to why they would not import it anymore.

It's called Bon Ami and I wrote about it here
the one with the little yellow bird on it.
Not wanting a toxic overload I scrubbed my kitchen sink with baking soda.
I really had to work at the stains and I wore my Glovely of course.
It required a LOT of elbow grease.
I made a paste of it first and let it do some of the work before I scrubbed.
The sink looks much better now.

I contacted the company and they told me I would need to order a minimum of 36 cans and then they would ship to me!
That sounds like a lifetime supply.
I will wait until I go to the US.
That sounds like a great excuse for a holiday...
"Honey I NEED to go to Seattle to buy Bon Ami."

The Bobbi Brown foundation I use is not available in Canada either.
The Bobbi Brown and Nordstrom sites will not ship to Canada so I had to send it to our nephew and he's bringing it up next time he comes for a visit.

Lands' End cashmere cardigans are not shipped to international addresses this Fall!
I am so disappointed because I love their cashmere cardigans.
According to the person I spoke with it is because they have shell buttons.

I thought that we had negotiated free trade...
silly me, I am so naive.
(grumble grumble)

Thank you for stopping by and visiting my pedestrian life here in The Humble Bungalow.

Hostess.

  1. Nooooo - I have been looking at the sweaters and planning my purchase. I'll have to find a friend in the US, I guess. Free Trade hasn't seemed much of a boon so far!

  2. Isn't it silly that we are neighbors and yet have to put up with this nonsense? I am always chagrined when I hear that something can't be shipped across the border. Hostess, I would love to help you out by sending you a can of Bon Ami.

I, too, love Method cleaners and also another environmentally friendly product line, Mrs. Meyers. The scents are clean and leave a room spic and span (or do I mean Bon Ami.)

    1. How kind of you to think of me and what a generous offer. I will think on this...

  3. My goodness...I can't imagine why all of the products can't be shipped to Canada ~ strange. I always use Comet if I need a powered scrub, but perhaps it has some nasty side effect I am not aware of...it sure works well though. I don't know anything about Method cleaners but if you are recommending them I am sure they are good.

    1. Comet has bleach and I do not like the smell. Bon Ami is less toxic and does not have a scent that I am aware of... I prefer to use "greener" cleaners whenever possible.

  4. Oh NO! Based on your recommendations, I've been considering ordering cashmere from Land's End. That IS disappointing.

    1. Sounds like we could all get together and go south of the border!

  5. It is disappointing to not have certain products available. I did have some Bon Ami cleanser from a few years ago. Maman and I went shopping in Washington State a few weeks ago and bought goods at better prices than we have in Canada. I do like to use lavender based products or Caldrea.

  6. Capital Iron had all their products last time I was there. LA

    1. I will have Mr. HB look tomorrow.
I have looked high and low everywhere I go.
Fingers crossed that they have some left...
      thank you.

  7. I have enjoyed Method cleansers. I use one of them for our stone countertops in our kitchen.

  8. I like Method hand soaps, they are really good. I'm with Kristien above, I will send you a can of Bon Ami if you'd like! Email me and I'll get on it. Can Lands' End cashmere be shipped to you privately or would those shell buttons prove to be a pesky problem? XO, Jill

  9. I think the shell buttons might be problematic...
but where there is a will there's a way!

  10. I've been following your blog for a while now, & I just had to comment about Bon Ami. Baking soda works just as well, I started using baking soda when I ran out of Bon Ami, & I've continued doing so for the last six months.

  11. Hostess, thanks for the explanation re the cardigans - I tried to order a cotton one the other day (shell buttons) and it wouldn't work. I've tried a couple of Method and Mrs. Meyer's cleaners and unfortunately the scent gives me a headache. Instead I use hot water, vinegar, tea tree oil and another oil - lavender or orange or lemon. And baking soda is great on the sink!

  12. I love Caldrea and Mrs. Meyers (although my favourite scent, Geranium, is impossible to find nowadays).

Leslie you are looking totally smashing in your top photo!

    1. Thank you! I must give those Caldrea products a test drive...I have Mrs. Meyer's shower cleaner and it is quite luxe.

  13. I've always lived in the U.S., so I don't really know anything about the trade restrictions you're talking about. But I do know from the association I work for that Canada has far stricter environmental restrictions than we do. Could the problems with getting these products be environmental in nature? And would that be such a bad thing?

    1. I only know that there is an issue with the shell buttons. I must investigate a little further. I know that Ivory and tortiose shells have been banned for many years and with good reason so perhaps the shells are from a sea shell that is threatened or on the endangered list. I am sure there is a justifiable reason...
As to the Bobbi Brown I think it is because we are a bilingual country and the ingredients need to be printed in both English and French on every product sold in Canada. That adds costs for the companies and has been an issue since the legislation was enacted.

  14. I´ve used baking powder since Sanda ( Halcyon Days ) posted about it. It is so cheap.
What I´m mad about that Montaigne market won´t ship their reptile stuff anywhere except France, though things should be available at least throughout the European Union.
So I missed a gorgeous bag, which was 50% off, as I know no one in France. Sigh.
But- shell buttons- a ridiculous excuse!

    1. Am sure Finland is in the EU,Montaigne market can only sell exotic skins within the EU,so you should have been able to purchase a bag? many trading agreements/regulations are due to shipping regulations.
MM send items worldwide and use Fedex to deliver.......I have never bought from MM myself but know others have with no problem.

  18. We are the kiss of death to products here in the UK. If we like it then it is taken of the market: brown bread, kitchen roll, sink cleaner muffins. At least the sink cleaner came back with a different importer. I can heartily recommend "Bar Keeper's Friend".

  19. Bon Ami is great! If you have a friend here in the states have them mail some to you. I don't understand what the big deal is about the US getting things to and from Canada. I hope they never stop allowing my thyroid medication to be shipped because it is from Canada and the only one that is working for me!

  20. I would also like to suggest Bar Keeper's Friend. That's what I use and I think it's great. Thanks for what you do - I enjoy reading your blog.
