OOTD walking style, cats books and grandbabies...

Destination Paris...is a few weeks away and there are a few things left to attend to before I leave.
We've been really busy here in and around The Humble Bungalow.
Cleaning silver, washing and ironing linens, sorting out clothes, weeding and planting in the garden.
Oh and lots of walking...which I like to think of as "training for Paris!"
I weighed in this week and was 1 measly ounce over my 2 pound window from my "goal weight" so I had to pay to weigh in...the upside was that WW has some new chocolate treats at 2 points each that I stocked up on...
no guess work when a chocolate craving comes along and if you are like me...it will strike at some point!

The deer have been nibbling our tulips in the garden so we put some up on the porch in hopes that they will not climb the steps to munch their meal.

Loving the variegated leaves...

We harvested our first feed of asparagus this season and oh they were tasty.

The violets have taken over but they make a charming ground cover....

These are new to The Humble Bungalow garden.
a native plant...known commonly as a "shooting star."

So sweet and delicate.

I finished reading Elizabeth George's first in The Inspector Lynley series...
"The Great Deliverance"
I found it quite unsettling...
It was well written but a little TOO scary for my taste.
I am a wuss and prefer lighter books.

I popped into the used book shop in the Village and found this little gem...
while I was there I spied the bonniest blond little boy...and it was none other than our fair haired Henry!
He and his mom were perusing the books in the children's section.
Of course we stopped for a hug and a kiss and we had a "wander about" while his mom chose a book.

I read this many years ago and thought it a lovely read...

My friend Ruth gave me this book as I enjoyed Rachel's first novel "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry."

I am on the look out for a used copy of The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton...

Our cat Pepper was back at the vets for a complete work up...
she has been having digestive upsets for the past few days and it has been a tense time.
I spent the better part of last evening at the Vet Hospital and we are trying to figure out just what is amiss...
they think she might have IBD.

She has come home with some medications and some special food.
Fingers crossed that she will rally.

On the upside I have a play date with my darling grandson Henry!

Hope that you have a fun weekend.

Oh, I love the House of Mirth. Also Age of Innocence.

I love Elizabeth George, but I have to be in the right mood to read her. Her characters are very complex.

I am reading the shopaholic series now, by Sophie kinsella. Love the books so far, they are entertaining and hilarious, with a tinge of real life message about them

Did you see the movie of Mrs. Dalloway? When I hear Vanessa Redgrave's voice on Call the Midwife, it evokes those lovely movies that she made. You look trim in your running jacket. I don't have any athletic clothing with me but I find that putting it on propels me. I walk a little more quickly, swing my arms a bit more. I was contemplating buying Elizabeth Bard's book on Kobo so I can read it now but I'll bet that when I get home, my friend Janet will have bought it and I can borrow it. Good luck with the ounce!

Your garden is so lovely! Those tulips are divine, hope the deer leave them alone. I've been wanting to read Mrs. Dalloway for years now, thanks for the reminder!

What beautiful flowers, especially the shooting stars. I've never heard of them.

I will, indeed, be having a lovely weekend which will end in Paris -- not a bad way to end a weekend or to start the week.

I love Edith Wharton and have read "The House of Mirth." The title belies the story, as I'm sure you will have guessed. That's all I will say.

Hope Pepper gets over her tummy troubles. My Victor has the same problem, and my Allegra has a weight problem (she's on Purina OM and has a weight loss coach --- moi!!). My eldest, Cecilia, is fashionably thin and still in excellent health, despite some arthritis in her hips. She will be 21 in June.

Paris in the spring is so lovely. You'll have a fabulous time. Take lots of pix.

Bon voyage, M-T

Familiar books (House of Mirth) and new ones (by Rachel Joyce) are one of the fun things about reading blogs. My list of books to read grows and grows.
Your garden flowers are gorgeous. I have one lone violet plant and I'm hoping that it will feel at home, spread out and invite lots of friends to stop by.
You must be so excited as your departure for Paris approaches!

Absolutely love the tulips with variegated leaves! Do you know the name of them? Plants with variegated leaves are some of my favorites. Sorry to hear that Pepper is under the weather. Hope all is well soon.

Good for you for getting back down to your goal weight, L! .1 is nothing - you can do that! Hey, I am leading the Thursday night meeting at Cook St while Carol is off sick - come say hi if you are in the neighbourhood. :-)

Best wishes and good vibes to dear Pepper!

Ah...I think we have a very similar palette when it comes to mysteries. I was waiting to read your opinion of EG. If you had enjoyed the book, I would have given her another try. If/when I come across an author that writes in the style of Louise Penny, I'll let you know.

Have you been at all anxious with your trip preparation recently? Cats are very intuitive, and it's possible that she is picking up that something is about to happen. For you, that something is a very good thing...a trip to PARIS, squeeee...but Pepper might be interpreting your excitement as something fearful. Just a thought. Either way, I too send good vibes to sweet Pepper! Hope she feels better soon!

All of the flowers are so lovely. I know that diet can really help with kitty disorders, when Miss Twiggley was a kitten she was on a special feed and it really made a difference. I hope Pepper will recover soon.

Can't wait to see all your pictures of Paris in the Spring...on my bucket list too ;)
Hope poor Pepper is on the mend soon. Does he go outside? Maybe your friend is right, about the lilies?

Those deer in Oak Bay can be quite destructive. My son put up a fence around the garden in their backyard and the deer still managed to get in and eat stuff. He's given up on gardening. I love shooting star! It grows as a wildflower, and I wasn't aware there was a domestic version. Have fun with your grandson!

I found a new copy of House of Mirth today in a book shop and am looking forward to reading it...will add Age of Innocence to my list. Thank you FS!

I have not seen Mrs. Dalloway and I adore Vanessa's voice on Call the Midwife...
I was at the book shop this morning and I see that Elizabeth has another book...Picnics in Provence!

I'm feeling very much like re reading some of the classics for some reason which escapes me...I suppose it is a nod to an age of elegance and good manners.

The shooting star might be a Pacific Northwest Native plant...they grow wild here and these are bred for sale in the nuseries as it is illegal to pick the wild ones.
Paris next week!! How delightful for you...
I found House of Mirth at the book shop today! I am currently reading Mrs. Dalloway which is quite evocative...I love Virginia Woolf's writing...think I'll re read A Room of her Own sometime too.
Bon Voyage!

If you want some freebies...email or call me and we can arrange to dig some up as I have more than I need!

The tulips are called Yellow Wave...Pepper has a delicate digeative system and she often eats things that she shouldn't so I try very hard to make sure that there is nothing left around to tempt her...the fringe on our carpets might even tempt her but I am not lopping them off just yet!

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I'll keep that meeting in mind Sheila...I am determined to walk off the 2 pounds 1 ounce to get to my actual goal weight...I appreciate that WW gives us a 2 pound window but I'd feel better if I stayed at my goal weight...all that hard work and I don't want to let it go!

Oh thank you...Louise Penny is a gentle writer with a softer touch and yet still weaves a riveting mystery...I've tried Cara Black and hers are set in Paris but she is rather more violent and dark. It might be tough to find anyone come close to Louise but we can keep trying!

She is turning her nose up at the special food but is as affectionate as ever. Will see what the next few days bring and thank you for your kind words.

Pepper is an indoor cat and we have orchids which she doesn't nibble and two Xmas cacti which sit up on high ledges that she cannot jump to...so if she ate something that did not agree with her I am mystified as to what it might be...

I just got home from my walk and noticed 5 deer in a lot a block away form us which is waiting for the construction of a new home(s) and the fencing is at least 6 feet high so they must be very adept at jumping!

Hi Hostess... Having a few problems making a comment so apologies if I m repeating myself.
I really enjoy every aspect of your blog and sincerely hope that you continue writing. I found it just before Christmas and enjoyed it so much I went back to the beginning! You have even encouraged me to buy a silk scarf!!! Not a Hermes though, unfortunately. Although the colours are beautiful, perfect for summer and thanks to you I ll know how to tie it!
I'm visiting Paris at the moment and the weather is amazing for Spring. 27 degrees today and lots of sunshine. I hope that it stays like this for your visit. Have a wonderful time!

I can't WAIT to find "Perfect"! I've read both Harold Fry and the follow- up with Queenie Hennesey in the title. I've loved both of them.

I KNOW you'll have a wonderful time in Paris! Lucky you. :)
