Our Back Deck...
Our fixer upper in 1982...
Not much curb appeal I know but we knew that it had wood siding underneath those shingles and the dining room was in it's original condition with dark fir waiscotting and beamed ceiling...
plus it had the granite faced fireplace that I wanted and several fruit trees in the yard.
The reason that we purchased this fixer upper was it's wonderful location;
2 blocks to the water
good schools nearby
walking distance to Mr. HB's office
and close to the Cook Street Village shops.
The bungalow had been rented out for about 10 years and as you can plainly see had been sadly neglected.
We were young energetic and thought sweat equity was a great way of getting into the real estate market!
We had a golden retriever and two small children so we had to act fast to get the yard cleaned up after we moved in.
A dump truck was hired so we could remove all the junk...
Mr. HB worked with the truck driver all day and they made two trips to the dump!
The deck was rebuilt again in 2013-2014 and I love the look.
I think that Mr. HB has really outdone himself with this design.
We still have a few projects on the back burner...
the house needs painting and we have to redo our master bedroom and closet.
All in good time...

Mr. HB did a fabulous job on the redesign of your deck. I just love the whole thing! This series of posts have been so much fun to see and to read.
From Margie in Toronto - how lovely - and it's so interesting to see the transformations made over the years. Love the beautiful flowers.
Labor of love! Mr. HB does good work. Hope you are still able to enjoy your outdoor space.
What a beautiful deck...if only mine looked half that good. It is absolutely lovely.
It's gorgeous! Love the re-do and I didn't know you were so close to the water, what an amazing location and what a smart buy your cottage was.
I've just made final decisions on our master bedroom and I'm choosing the wallpaper for the closet interior today, it will be one of the finished rooms when we move back in so I'm planning a post on it.
Have really enjoyed The Ugly Truth series!
I've also really enjoyed this series, and the deck is absolutely perfect. Mr. HB is a very talented architect and builder!
You've put such love and care into your bungalow; it's truly inspiring! The new deck looks fabulous.
Yes, I love this new deck. The vertical lines, the white paint, all of it.
Wow, your new deck is lovely. So inviting too.
When you first see the photos you do not realise the hard work, thought, planning and good taste that went into making it such a lovely home. Jenny.
Well. I will disregard that last comment.
I just want to say what an inspiration your home improvements are! When I look at pictures of your cute house, I just assumed it was always like that. A great deal of effort and talent went into making it your home with such character and charm. I am thinking I need to go out and do some design work now:)
I deleted that comment which was totally off topic and offensive to women.
Thank you Carolyn, Mr. HB is enjoying reading the readers comments as he has worked so hard to make our home comfortable.
It's getting pretty chilly here so we will not be lazing about on the porch much longer!
I'm really enjoying your renovation posts too and I do envy you being able to rip it all apart at once and live elsewhere and then move in while you put on the final touches.
Mr. HB is enjoying reading comments such as yours!
What a wonderful transformation you and Mr. HB have effected! The spirit of your sweet bungalow must be very pleased to have been brought back to life so convincingly.
I think you and Mr. HB have done a spectacular job! How wonderful to have a handy husband, and you don't have to call someone for help, every other day.
