Folly and the Wisdom of Women

Wisdom's folly...

"The unexamined life is not worth living."
~ Plato ~

Folly definition as it appears online on  Merriam-Webster's dictionary...

fol·ly noun \ˈfä-lē\
: the lack of good sense or judgment

: a foolish act or idea : foolish behavior

: a very unusual or fancy building that was built in a garden for decoration or amusement in the past

On my 10K walk along the seafront today thoughts bubbled up....
and I am still digesting them.

OOTD
(The firm's annual staff party and what I wore to a penthouse suite overlooking the inner harbour)

Banana Rebublic tweed dress
Susan Bristol black sweater jacket
black fish net hose
Calvin Klein kitten heel pumps
gumball pearl necklace

My choice is rather pedestrian, nothing out of the ordinary...

Reminiscent of what Emma Thompson wore to her husband's staff party in "Love Actually"
(one of my favourite holiday films)
I am dressed for comfort
not looking for attention
with greying hair
laugh lined eyes
progressive glasses
a slacking jaw
a sense of humour
life experiences
grandchildren
a humble life
a wonderful husband
many blessings
good friends

I am happy to be mingling with the guests
sipping wine and sampling the hors' d oeuvres...

I feel comfortable in my own skin...
the French have a saying for that...
~ "Bien dans sa peau: being comfortable in your own skin" ~

I might have waited almost 60 years to feel this way.

It is a wonderful feeling
and I feel immense gratitude.

I am reminded of a lovely woman that I worked with for 17 years who lived her life honestly
she has had a huge influence on how I view life.
( I have never told her and I really must!)

She is an older woman who dresses to please herself
reads voraciously
attends many art and cultural events in town,
is on the pulse of what is "happening about town"
keeps fit by walking
spends time with her family and grandchildren
travels
gives of herself to the community
tends her garden
entertains
is enthusiastic about life
is fully present in her daily round
loves tea
(owns many beautiful china teacups and saucers)
has struggled with her health and never complains
she is dignified
elegant
is calm and centered
and she meditates every day.

I think if we pay close attention to women of this calibre that we will be able to pass on some of this wisdom to the young women who are following in our footsteps...

I'm looking and listening to the wise women in my midst...
I hope to keep learning.

"A wise woman wishes to be no one's enemy; a wise woman refuses to be anyone's victim."

Nighty Night...sleep tight.

It's night time and all is quiet and calm in The Humble Bungalow kitchen.

Mr. HB and I have been watching House of Cards on Netflix and I am stunned by the evil and malice of Frances.
He is the character that Kevin Spacey portrays so convincingly alongside his on screen wife Claire played by Robin Wright whose role is a nasty piece of work as well.

It is about as far away from delicious and addictive Downton Abbey as it can get but we sit riveted just the same.
I like the grittiness of the cinematography, the sepia tones playing against the blacks and white of the sets.
Robin's hair cut is very chic and she looks so attractive in her stylish wardrobe.
I do not know how she walks around in those high heeled shoes though...
meandering on a path in the park with her lover she walks with such grace that it looks effortless.
(a skill that I have never mastered!)

I have a routine at night...before getting myself ready for bed.
Do you?

I plump the pillows on the love seats.
Put all the dishes in the dishwasher and turn it on.
Wipe down all the granite counter tops and stove before turning out the lights.

I take off my make up and wash my face before applying a light layer of Sea Buck Thorn Salve.
Brush and floss my teeth and put some lip conditioner on before grabbing a bottle of Perrier.
If I wake up during the night I'll have a few sips so that I stay hydrated throughout the night.
I am a firm believer of drinking lots of water.
I think it helps in so many ways and keeps my skin clear.

Reading is not one of my regular night time routines unless I go to bed super early.
My mind gets over active when I read at night and I have a difficult time quieting it after I close my book.

Sleep is much deeper on the days when I walk vigorously and get plenty of fresh sea air.
On nights when I have had a busy or stressful day or had caffeine after 4 pm I need to practise Yogic breathing...
it works surprisingly well....no need to count sheep.
Alternatively view this You Tube Sleepy Time Yoga session.

Soft cotton sateen sheets, a feather pillow, and the goose down duvet all contribute to making my sleep as restorative experience as possible and I need at least 8 hours or I cannot function.

How are you sleeping at night?
What habits have you adopted to ensure that you enjoy a restful night of slumber?

Sweet dreams,
Hostess

Snow Day Doings...

I've been busy this morning in The Humble Bungalow.

I "planted" the paper whites so that they will be blooming for Christmas.
These bulbs are forced into bloom using glass pebbles and water at their roots.
I love their heady fragrance and pure white flowers.
Keep the water levelled at the roots and you will be surprised how fast they grow.

We woke up to see a light frosting of snow this morning and it is still snowing.
I love an excuse to stay home, keep warm and putter in The Humble Bungalow.

Our house guest left yesterday...
we had a wonderful visit.
I served her a curried chicken soup which proved out be a great time saver as we had gone to the late afternoon showing of Philomena starring Dame Judi Dench and Steve Coogan.
Steve wrote the screenplay, produced and starred in the film.

We had a funny experience at the ticket wicket...

The young fellow on duty assumed that we were both seniors!
I was ahead of my friend and I quickly moved aside to make room for her at the wicket
and I was out of earshot while she was paying.
When she caught up with me she was smiling broadly...as was I.
I told her that I got in for $4.75 the seniors rate!
She told me she got the seniors rate too but the fellow had a problem with her debit card...
so he said go on in the movie is on me today.

I highly recommend the film.

The soup "mix" base.
All you need to add are onions, chicken or prawns, a can of coconut milk, water and a few carrots.
I made this the previous day.
This hearty soup made a great meal.

We walked to and from the theatre and did not get back until just about 7 pm.
I put out some fresh veggies and dip while I heated up the soup and we sat and had a glass of wine while we waited for it to get hot.

I'm going to spend some of the afternoon cooking before sitting down to finish reading my current novel.

The forecast is for a wind chill factor which will give the impression of minus 15...
I might need to light a fire in the fireplace to chase the chill away.
Cashmere socks and a thick fleece jacket are not quite enough!
 Definitely not my usual OOTD!

White Sale...and thoughts of Mother.

New towels from Lands End arrived in the post...
Supima cotton terry in a nice weight and pure white.
Not as fluffy as the pricier Abyss brand but all 6 pieces were less than the cost of one Abyss bath towel.

Frugal yes but will they last?
I hope that I am not going to regret this purchase and only time will tell how they stand up to bi~weekly washings and daily use. It's an experiment and one that I will be repeating in various areas of my domestic scene for the next while. I will report back and advise in due course.

Tied up with grey gross grain ribbon they look like a present!

I took Mother to see the film Quartet at the theatre recently and we were almost the last ones seated.
It was so popular and it has a fabulous all star cast
Maggie Smith is lovely in her role!
We chose a matinee which might have been a mistake as every one else seemed to have the same idea
perhaps the gloomy grey skies had something to do with it...
Mother does love a great film or play as they seem to transport her to a place that she loves to be.

I've noticed that Mother is quite lonely these past few months..
despite the efforts of my sister and I to keep her entertained.

Her friendly neighbour Elizabeth moved to a hip condo building downtown
so their impromptu wine and cheeses and afternoons sipping copious amounts of tea are sorely missed.
It must be so hard to keep ones spirits up when one lives alone.
Her cleaning lady comes once a week to do the bathrooms, kitchen, vacuum and dust.
Mother makes her a lovely tea and a snack and they sit for a bit and have a chat.

I do wonder why Mother doesn't join in the Senior's Centre activities...
considering she really never was much of a joiner
it should not be a surprise
it's too bad because there may be a friend out there for her...
someone that she could play cards with or go out to lunch or tea with
someone who may be a widow like she is and has shared similar life experiences.

My friend Sandy's mother Pam and Mother got along and they would seek each other out for some fun.
Sadly Pam passed away last year...
a lot of Mother's friends have had health issues and are now in care or gone.

Mother is still driving and gets out regularly which is her saving grace.
She pays her bills and shops for her own groceries
does her banking and loves to shop for clothes.

It's difficult watching someone you love age before your very eyes.

I'd like to hold tight to those images of her when I was younger and she was the belle of the ball.
Dressing up in her finery for evenings out with Father.
Me sitting on her bed taking in every detail...
from the silky lace trimmed slips
to her fastening her hose and garters
the dabs of Shalimar
behind her ears, her neck and on her wrists
Father zipping up her zipper
fastening her Sherman necklace
Mother
carefully arranging her hair
and
clipping on her sparkling dangly earrings
then applying her red lipstick
before blotting on a tissue to absorb the excess
then swishing by me a giving me a quick kiss before grabbing her fur
and disappearing out the door...

memories have the power to take me back in time
a long long time ago...

This is a delightful read from the blogger Orangette.
Pop by to get a taste of her delicious writing!

We have house guests coming for the weekend...
what plans do you have?

Have Fun!

Pillow talk ~ Hostess Tips for Stress Free Holiday Shopping

Do you remember the film Pillow Talk?
The vintage rom com starring Doris Day and Rock Hudson.

Mother and I spent many happy hours watching films with Doris Day and Rock Hudson when I lived at home.
Father wasn't a big fan of this genre, he preferred James Bond or espionage films.

Mother and I went for a drive this past weekend and did some shopping at Mattick's Farm.
Homebody has sumptuous imported linens and Danish porcelain pieces. It's my new favourite spot to shop for gifts and home decor items.

I managed to find a pillow for our new love seats.
My back aches if I do not support it with a cushion,
it's because I am short and my feet cannot touch the ground without the extra padding!

Belgian Linen
in an off white shade
the cover is removable for laundering

Chester is giving it the sniff test.

checking the construction

I think he approves.

Over a cup of freshly brewed tea I made out my annual Christmas Do List.

Things to make and bake and take.
Scottish Shortbread
Rum Balls
Bark

List of hostess gifts and ideas...
candles
soaps
linen tea towels and napkins
jams and jellies
fancy vinegars
olive oils
teas

List of people that we buy gifts for, mostly family and friends
ideas jotted down beside their names.

Things I need to do...
buy, write and mail the Christmas cards
order the turkey
buy the Christmas crackers
get the tree
buy a wreath for the front door
buy some poinsettias
plan the menu for Xmas dinner

Decide on the table cloth and napkins for the turkey feast.
If a new colour is in order buy the cloth and napkins ahead so there is no last minute panic shopping.

I try to shop ahead close to home
in smaller shops nearby
to avoid stress of parking lots and crowded stores.
Walking to the shops is a bonus and I'll frequently indulge in a seasonal treat ~
an egg nog latte from Starbucks.

When I bake, write cards, or do the wrapping I put on my favourite Christmas CD's.
I'll light an aromatic candle and sip a cup of tea or perhaps a wee sherry.
It's so much more pleasant and helps me get into the spirit of the festive season.

I'll keep my shopping list in my purse and make notes as I shop
that way I can keep track of who I have bought for and therefore do not over buy.
I could use my IPhone too but old habits die hard!

Make and plan ahead some meals for nights when energy is waning.
Aim to get to bed earlier to avoid falling ill.
Hydrate with plenty of water
and
breath deeply and mindfully.
Try to give yourself ample time to accomplish your tasks
rushing just makes one frantic and nerves can get frazzled so quickly.
Be kind to others and don't let the rudeness of others get you down.

Try to schedule in some pampering at the Spa
or set some time aside
a few hours at home for a restorative facial
and a relaxing soak in the tub.

I savour and enjoy getting ready for the holidays
making it easy and enjoyable is how I manage to make the most of the pre-season busy~ness.

Oh!
 I almost forgot
Remember to smile!

Best wishes

Tuscan Sun...a meagre wardrobe, and thoughts of Seattle.

One of my favourite movies is Under the Tuscan Sun
the cinematography is rich,
the scenery is beautiful,
the story wonderful.

I put myself into the story and imagine what it might be like if I were to live Frances Mayes' adventure in Tuscany.

After watching the film a few years ago I immediately got my hands on the novel by Frances Mayes.
The novel was devoured in record time and I was left craving red wine and pasta!

Little did I know that she had written a cookbook...
one of the year end gifts I received was this lovely book.
A big thank you goes out to my teaching partner!

Mr. HB loves short ribs so the first recipe I have prepared is Short Ribs Tuscan style!

Lucky that we own a vast Le Creuset ovenproof pot
the recipe filled this almost to the brim.

In a freshly cleaned oven
the weight of the pot
+
sagging racks
 contents are weighty.

The Humble Bungalow smells divine.

The windows inside the Humble Bungalow are all spotless and shining.
Now all we need is some sunshine to prove it!

I went through my meagre wardrobe and found a few pieces that needed further weeding.
I have been wearing the same few basics over and over.
It makes getting dressed fast and easy.

It surprises me that I do not mind having a minimalist wardrobe.
Would you be comfortable living with less?

Changing the idea of what constitutes a workable wardrobe has been a slow process.

Less
is definitely working...
streamlined to the basic workhorses
add those brilliant accessories
seems to fit my simple lifestyle.

Black and white are the neutral basics left hanging in my closet.
There are some spaces that could be refilled which would inject some energy
and a splash of colour might be fun.
I plan to keep an open mind when I go shopping.
I have been avoiding the stores lately in preparation for the trip so it will be fun to see what they are showing.

I do "need" shoes
and I am not exaggerating!

Seattle will certainly have some shoes
and a few basics
as I need to replace some tees and tanks.

There's a new wheel on the Seattle waterfront
which looks far too ambitious for either Mother or myself...
it looks a bit like the millennium wheel!
I think we'll do the Space Needle
and perhaps "ride the ducks!"

Summer often means a holiday...
tell me what are you planning
a stay cation
or a vacation?

Nature's antibiotic...Hail to Kale Caesar recipe included.

Did you know that garlic is Nature's antibiotic?
It can keep those blood sucking vampires at bay too...
We grew a crop this year and Mr. HB has harvested the crop and braided it for storage and easy access...

hung up to dry by the sink
I think it looks quite arty
perhaps even Italian

The simple Caesar salad recipe follows
substitute kale for the romaine.

Wash and spin dry a bunch of kale
remove the tough ribs and tear into bite size pieces
place in a salad bowl.

Our fundraising cookbook from 1992

I was the Parent Advisory President that year and we were fundraising crazy back then...
chocolate sales, fruit by the box, chicken breasts, cards and giftwrap, hot dog days, the annual Spring Fair
and let's not forget those evenings in the smoke filled cage of the local casino counting out money!

We bought a computer lab with 30 brand new state of the art Mac's
and we gave each classroom teacher $150 a year for incidentals and paid for fun days and field trips
as well as special events for the entire school to enjoy.

Those were the good old days
when our children were young and we had masses of energy and time to share.

My cookbook is falling apart
the kids have grown up and flown the nest.

It's just us and the cats now...

It's a wonder that I even get a blog post written...

someone is very sleepy...

I am so smitten with Chester
he is just a bundle of loveliness!

I have permission from our son Stewart to share an image that he took of their one and only garden rose...
and it's a stunner.

a song from one of my favourite all time movies...
have a listen and walk down memory lane with me.

Mr. HB and Mother are both down with a nasty cough and cold.
Apparently it is making the rounds and many people are home
sidelined with boxes of tissues and cough syrup.

Nin Jiom
is on the job in both our households...

Personally I think there is a better time to get a cold
that would be winter
no one likes to be sick come summer...

I do hope Mother rallies as we are planning to zip off to Seattle in July for some fun, food and shopping.

Hooray it's my last week of work until September!
I am delighted...

Hugs, health, and Happiness.
(and a Happy Birthday shout out to Natalie!)

Squared silky....scarves.

Greetings from The Humble Bungalow!
I am posting and hosting from the bed chamber.

Feeling a bit better but not totally rushing back to work...
I do like to share with my co-workers, however I do draw the line when it comes to germs.

Isn't orange a dazzling shade?

Hermes signature colour...
I do have scarves that are not made by Hermes.

Hand rolled silk squares are my preference.

This Lanvin scarf is the only orange accent I have in my wardrobe.
I know the magazines are showing all manner of tangerines clothes
but I have to buck the trends and stay with what suits me.

I'd rather add it in small doses, a sprinkling here a sprinkling there.
An enamel bangle, a scarf or possibly some Havaiana's....

Not wanting to attract attention is probably why I shy away from brights.

This very large square by an Italian maker drapes softly and can cover my shoulders.
This scarf came to me via Value Village
and if memory serves it was under $20.

Black and banana yellow run riot in this detailed patterned scarf
another large square which has been hiding away for far too long.
I found this in the antique mall near Pike Place Market in Seattle.

The Coach scarf was a Christmas gift from my son and his lovely wife.
a very extravagant gift indeed!

I find the squares are the most versatile scarves to work with...
there seems to be a great supply in the local shops.

Silky scarves are a great way
to add a splash of colour
for me they make me feel a bit more "dressed up."
If you've shied away from silky squares I'd challenge you to go to a local thrift shop and buy one
with a pattern and colours "that speak to you"
play around tying it different ways in front of the mirror
and get comfortable with your tying skills.

On my last Hermes scarf shopping adventure
the clerk mentioned that I was very adept tying the scarves...
she said most women that come in are very tentative and shy.
I say this not to brag but to support the theory that "practice makes perfect"
well maybe not "perfect" but "good enough" to impress the Hermes clerk!

I watched "The Queen" with Helen Mirren last night
she wore many different Hermes scarves
wrapped over her head in her signature style keeping her hair tidy.
(A look that works for her but looks silly on me!)

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee coverage will be starting soon on the CBC.
I hope to be watching...
will you?

Laying about these past few days has been tedious
the sun has been shining and the birds have been singing their little hearts out.
I long to be outside mucking about in The Humble Bungalow Garden.

I finished reading the Post Mistress and I highly recommend it...
the author Sarah Blake spent some time at the VCCA
which reminds me
I must ask my artist friend Cheryl Fortier if she met her when she was studying there.

I am off to read a classic...
the thoughts and musings of a woman who is struggling with finding balance in her life.
I always come away from this with a bit more clarity.
Solitude and meditation,
a room of one's own,
is what Anne Morrow Lindbergh needs
and finds it on a small island on the East Coast
where she lives in a rustic cabin steps away from a sandy beach...

Seeking some comfort and serenity
an escape from the sneezing and coughing
that I want to ignore...

Glorious lilacs
lift my spirits.

Arranging a bowl of flowers in the morning
can give a sense of quiet in a crowded day ~
like writing a poem or saying a prayer ~

Weekend Doings and Thoughtful Musings

Weekend Doings and Thoughtful Musings

Abkhazi Gardens
Cheryl and I strolled through these lovely grounds on Saturday.

Beauty was all around
every nook and cranny sported blooms.

Easter Lilies
so pure and delicate as they nodded in the gentle breeze.

So much has been packed into a short time
the weekend is almost over...

The weekend has flown by
Cheryl and I went to the spa
while Mr. HB and John went to a brew pub for lunch
I took Cheryl to the Abkhazi Gardens
we all walked along the sea front and watched the wind surfers
watched the movie Crazy Stupid Love
catch up
share laughter
we did our best to serve delicious meals
and offer comfort and hospitality to our friends
it was great to see them as they are off to France for the next 6 months.

Bon Voyage John and Cheryl!

The Humble Bungalow Blog was started on a whim and has become a large part of my routine.

I can't quite believe that I have arrived at the 603rd post,
it's rather staggering when I seriously think about it.

Our life here is so simple...
we are humble
and go about our daily round
expecting little
joys are often found while doing chores
they pop up and surprise us when we least expect it.

This morning is a good example
we had said goodbye to our house guests and I was tidying up
the vacuuming was finished and Pepper was in the front hallway
I was just about to take a load of towels downstairs to the laundry room
when I was stopped in my tracks...
Pepper was pawing frantically in the air trying to catch the dust particles that she could see moving in the sunshine.

It was a glimpse of something unexpected and it made me smile.

Tell me about your weekend!

Chemise please!

The weather has been positively beastly and grey and dull and I needed to seek out some comfort and colour.

I've been very frugal lately because we have the renovation underway and there really isn't anything I "need"
well there is one thing!
So I popped on my grey and black feline printed scarf (the one from my tying tutorial) and my grey duffel coat, over top of black boots, skinny jeans, white tank and my black cashmere sweater...it's no wonder I crave colour!

I was on a mission as our stove top kettle finally packed it in after many years of fine service.

I traipsed all over looking for a new kettle that was to my liking. I wanted something simple and durable yet with a bit of style as it sits on the stove top all the time. I looked at Le Creuset's, Staubs, Copco's and some really disappointing flimsy stainless steel models before giving up and resigning myself to finding one another day.

In the meantime I found some new towels on sale Hammam white Turkish towels and they are every bit as nice as the Abyss towels we currently have in The Humble Bungalow which are over 5 years old and starting to look their age. White never stays pure white forever....

Hammam bath sheet and towel
I have on order the face cloths and another bath sheet.
I'll decide if they'll be upstairs or downstairs towels later.

Quality~comfort
soft~supple~cotton~sateen

(this company also made our Hutterite down duvet)

a chemise if you please!
I have had one of these in the past and they are a delight to wear in the warmer days of summer.
It feels like nothing on but there is a wisp of coverage for modesty's sake.

this style has a wee hint of lace

Pepper thinks I brought home a toy for her to play with!

what's inside?

I spy with my little eye...
a furry tail!

Boo!

Remember that Red Huck
The twigs that I thought would bloom...
well they have sprouted leaves not flowers :(

On my way home from town I stopped off at the local Market for some food.
I also picked up my husband's shirts at the cleaners
and popped my head in the Hardware store...
and found the kettle that I needed!

Stainless steel Paderno
guaranteed for 25 years...
my husband's comment was "that kettle will see us out!"

Embracing frugality I made Osso Bucco with beef shanks and the next day I transformed the leftovers into
Scotch Broth Soup!

simmering and scenting the kitchen

I wish you could taste this bowl of soup.
You'll just have to trust me that it is in fact delicious!

Mr. HB and I watched The Help on the weekend and I loved it.
The book was a good read.
I'd recommend it
I mentioned it to Mother and she read it in a couple of days!

I hope that your week is off to a great start!
