Cruise ship shopping...

The cruise to Alaska is approaching so fast and I have not even written out my packing list! I must get busy and do something about that or I will forget something important.

I did find some time for a quick trip to the shops to find a knit top that would look nice over my dresses and would be an extra layer over my Eileen Fisher tank tops and black pants.

When I spied this Nanette Lapore knit I knew immediately that it filled the required style idea that I had in my head.

I also found a simple linen Tahari Tee top which I will pair with my linen capris.
It will go well with jeans, my black knit skirt, and all my pants.

I plan to wear my pearls on the cruise ship as they go with everything...
"keep it simple"
is my motto for a minimal travel wardrobe.

This is our first time on a cruise ship...
Do any of you have any advice on what I should pack?

Thank you for stopping by The Humble Bungalow Blog.

Where does one buy Nanette Lenore in Victoria? It is a great brand! Have not found it in local stores.

Are you going to take the 7 day cruise? Are you planning to take tours? I travelled to Alaska several times with my mother-in-law and found that a casual wardrobe with a light jacket worked well. I walked in all the ports and attended some yoga classes and the gym so exercise clothes were important. My mother-in-law liked the dining room so I took a couple of dressy outfits. It's really personal preference because my parents ate in the cafeteria restaurant and took only casual clothes. You will find the cruise is very relaxing and relaxed. You won't go wrong with your black and white wardrobe.

I found the knit sweater at Marshall’s!

Yes we are in the 7 day cruise!
I appreciate your advice about the Yoga clothes as I do hope to take in a few classes. Swimming will also be on my radar. I will take a couple of dresses and smart EF pants with a couple of her tops. A scarf and a light rain jacket and my new balance walking shoes.
Thank you Madame!

We went on the 7-day cruise several years ago. Be sure to pack a rain coat and layers because it can get chilly, especially when going up to the glacier. I even tucked in a small pair of knit gloves and pulled up the hood on my fleece jacket that day. I enjoyed dressing up (not formal) for dinner a little - a skirt and top, or a nice dress - and if you have formal nights, then there's the opportunity to go a little fancier. Your wardrobe is so well put together that I'm sure you will have no difficulty.

We are going to Europe for 3 weeks and I'm beginning to think about what to take. The weather has been very up and down, but looks to be really hot in the future, so I'm thinking lots of linen and loose clothing.

We are just home from a cruise which included Alaska. You need to take layers. We arrived in Alaska (via Japan and Russia and the Bering Sea) at the every end of May through June 6th. I wore as many as five layers on some of our outdoor excursions---and especially out on deck when close to the glaciers. We even wore stocking caps and gloves. You might check temperatures in each of your ports as it may have warmed up some. I wore nothing short sleeved or linen as it was so cold. It may have warmed up!

I've never been on a cruise so have nothing to share. I am interested to hear all about your trip.

Well, first, I will say: this is one of the most wonderful cruises you will ever take, because of the wildlife and breathtaking scenery. It's very chilly as you go North. And, there's rain, misty rain, and fog even. My entire family went on this trip 5 years ago. My daughter and I were never inside unless sitting in the crow's nest way high up in the front of the ship, drinking our hot beverages. Clothing on this cruise is not as difficult as you think. CASUAL is the rule. Love the Nanette Lapore sweater, but you'll wear it inside the ship. Outside you will need more. We hated the excursions, very expensive and they go even if the weather is bad, so I think you'll do better on your own. Also, there is no shopping in any of the little towns. The main thing is to enjoy seeing whales, eagles, bears, wolves in their natural habitat. We went up Tracy Arm Fijord and it was the BEST part of the trip because it is totally unspoiled by man. Walls of Mountains going straight up from the water on both sides, waterfalls, virgin territory which leaves you with your mouth wide open in awe. You will LOVE it !!

Layers it is!! Gloves and a hat with my packable down jacket. I have been on Pinterest looking at packing posts for 3 weeks in a carry on for my fall trip.
I look forward to hearing more about your trip!

I have a black EF vest and down jacket will consider packing a cashmere sweater now...a raincoat and some casual and dressy outfits should complete my packing. Gloves and a hat for the glacier and cooler stops.

I have heard that wifi is not always working on the ships so I may be offline for a lot if the cruise but I will take pictures and share them later when we return.

Oh that’s wonderful to hear! I love this info and it’s interesting to hear about the off ship excursions because we haven’t booked any! We looked at the options and thought we could just walk into these towns and explore. I will bring some warm layers thank you! I really appreciate your expert advice.

Oh, you are going to Alaska! I hope you are not too inundated with Australians on your cruise - it is very popular with the Aussies. My parents went about 25 years ago, and I remember my mother was very cold, as she packed only a light all-weather coat. You white knits are gorgeous, and look perfect for life on board. Good luck with your packing - I am trying to make a start on what to take to France in September, and now I see they are having heat-waves over there - Oh dear!

I love to go on cruises. I have been on the 7 day Alaskan cruise and I would love to go again. I recommend you check out Cruise Critic.com. It is wonderful website that tells you everything about cruising. They even have a discussion board on cruise fashion. Enjoy your travels!

I have been researching for a Maritimes trip in the fall and have repeatedly read, "Don't take anything that you will hate to lose." You may want to rethink the idea of bringing your pearls. I know how important they are to you! You could purchase a nice set of costume pearls and no one would be the wiser...Alaskan trip in our future as well. Can't wait to hear about yours. Carol in VT

It will be a mix of people aboard the ship...I am packing warm layers to wear on deck for the fiords and glaciers. I am trying to figure out what to take to Italy and France next fall...they are having a heatwave in France right now so who knows what we can expect.

I have been on cruise critic for a few months doing research..it has some great articles and tips. We should have fun...its a completely new experience for us and with some family joining us it will be even better!

We have a safe in our room so I hope it would not be too risky taking my pearls.
I will wear my wedding set of rings and my diamond studs which I never take off except to clean them. I have been on cruise critic and I never read that warning...what site were you on?

Not sure what cruise ship line you are going on - but if you can bring only a 22 inch and a carry on each - you may be able to roll your own luggage aboard with out having to check it and not have to wait for luggage delivery. This saves a few hours and your stress of worrying if your luggage is going to be delivered. If you can't do this - then be sure to pack your carry on with all the things you will need for the next 5 hours. This may include your bathing suit, prescription meds, and maybe a change of clothing for dinner. We have done many cruises and find less luggage the better. We opt to use the onboard laundry package - or "stuff a bag" offered on most cruises several times during the week. A windbreaker style jacket with an internal zip out fleese layer might be a better choice than a down one. Also a light weight packable backpack is great for Alaska - and maybe a small pair of light weight binoculars and a small packable umbrella - note some cruise lines (Holland American) give passengers umbrellas as you disenbark. The safe in the room is usually fine. We try and unpack while we are in port as the ship is not moving. Seabands are a great item to pack - they work well for stopping sea sickness. Enjoy your cruise - Alaska is one of my favorites.

Took the cruise last August and it was rainy and cold. I was happy to have some flannel shirts and cashmere sweaters to wear on top of them...packable down is a must, along with hat, gloves, and a long rain jacket. I wore my Aquatalia ankle boots almost every day as waterproof was key. For dinners on the ship, black pants and a nice top was dressy enough for any occasion. Enjoy! We had 20 family members on this cruise and being together was the best part (Alaska is beautiful but we did not see enough of it).

Thank you so much for your advice! We will have a carry on and checked luggage.
I have made note of your tips...

Oh your trip sounds wonderful! Great to share it with family.
One cannot see much of Alaska in a few days as it is a huge state!!

The fact that you will have a safe in your room is a good thing. There was no particular site, but several posts on Pinterest that shared the warning. And Jennifer Connelly mentioned recently that she lost a sentimentally favorite scarf on a shore excursion on her river boat cruise. I plan on taking scarves and some jewelry, but not favorites, on my trip. Carol in VT

Check out Nic and Zoe online. I purchased several linen cardigans. I love their pants with side zip and a little stretch. Dresses pack easy and always look good on. Foundation garments are perfect, not too tight.
