Yummy Gomae Salad

Have you eaten the Japanese spinach salad called Gomae?

Last month I met up with a few friends for lunch at a local sushi restaurant
and my friend ordered it, mentioning that it was fabulous
so I tried it too...

WOW!

My taste buds were doing a happy dance, it is SO delicious!

After tasting it I knew that I wanted to be able to make it at home.

I needed to buy a special Japanese bowl called a suribachi
(almost like a mortar and pestle)
I found one at the local Japanese market.

I decided to use the porcelain bowl designed and made by a local artist
Japanese potter Harumi Ota

Spinach is so good for us.
It's loaded in nutrients and is available all year long.

The salad also keeps for a few days covered in the refrigerator...
but beware
it may not last that long!

It is a tasty snack in between meals.

Here is the link to the recipe that I used.

I hope that you like it!

It looks yummy. Thank you for the link
I like it very much and use often sesame seeds, gomashio (crushed sesame seeds with sea salt ,ready to season a dish), tamari soy sauce (naturally brewed ,less salty soy sauce),miso or sesame oil in my kitchen for japanese style meals
Japanese dishes, especially when made at home, are healthy, delicious and low calory, don't you agree? I like sushi as well (in a restaurant-I've tried to make it at home but my rolls are always less beautiful and not firm, as they have to be. Maybe I should practice more and not quit)

I make something similar, using sesame oil and no sugar. It's a great marinade for fish as well.

I love gomae but I've never made it. And I've got a pretty blue and white bowl...and there's a Japanese store in Steveston. I'll have to try the recipe. It can't have many calories.

I have ordered that salad many times in restaurants but never tried making it at home. Looks pretty easy so I might try it - thanks so much for the link!

I love sushi too...I tried making it a few years ago but I am all thumbs...the results were not as I expected! This salad is much easier to make...and tasty.
You know what they say...practice makes perfect...but maybe "wabi sabi" rolls are good enough!

I cut the amount of sugar and it was just as good!
Will try it on fish...especially halibut and white fish...maybe salmon.
Thank you for the idea...

Try it once and you might be "hooked!"

It's very good on both halibut and salmon - I chop some green onions and cilantro and sprinkle over the top.

I have long been fond of Spinach Gomae. I have a Japanese friend who has taught me a few recipes over the years. Oddly, I have had getting a suribachi on my mind the last few months. May I ask where you found yours locally?

I found the suribachi at the Japanese shop on Shelbourne Street across from the plaza.
