What a difference a day makes...

Sunny daze
last week
found us sitting outside on the deck
at Quarter Deck Cottage...

before the rains came
followed quickly by an Arctic Front
bringing with it some SNOW!

"Snow Day Soup"

I added more water as some of it evaporated while it was simmering
probably about 2 cups
you could use vegetable broth instead but I did not have any on hand.

My lunch
warmed me up.

After the soup making I decided to bake a chocolate banana cake and found a wonderful recipe in my newest cookbook Good Taste by author Jane Green.

The kitchen looked like a bomb had gone off after the busy day in the kitchen so I put the dishwasher on and popped the kettle on for tea...
time for a bit of a rest.

At least that's what I thought....
until my dishwasher started spewing copious amounts of water onto the floor!
Quickly grabbing towels and turning off the appliance I mopped up the mess
then laboriously emptied the water inside the dishwasher using a ladle and a bowl.

Still faced with all the dirty dishes
I proceeded to hand wash the entire load...
UGH!
By the time I had finished
the tea was cold
so I brewed another pot and started researching new dishwashers.
I've decide on a Bosch 800 series
the quietest machine on the market and it has a great rating.

We ordered it and will have to wait about 10 days until it arrives and we will have it installed and the old one carted away...
it gave us at least 10 years of good service maybe 13 we cannot remember
I hope the new one will perform better and last longer.

Hope you are keeping cozy.

It's chilly here but the snow has melted
our furnace is on and working hard

I am wearing a down vest.

Single paned windows and minimal insulation does not keep us toasty warm
unless we dress in layers.

So sorry for the disaster, but you chose a great dishwasher. Second in line is Kitchenaid .

Your soup looks delicious; I will have to try it. It's supposed to be spring here in Oz but today is cold, very windy and wet with a sever weather warning in place. I nice day for soup and crusty bread!

Love getting those peeks into your cozy home! We had a Bosch dishwasher in our last house and it was truly quiet and did a great job. My present kitchen is too small for a dishwasher, but if I could squeeze one in,it would be a Bosch.

How true - how the weather has changed. Thank you for the soup recipe - it looks and sounds, not only delicious, but easy! Sorry to hear about the dishwasher. I hope your new one is all you are hoping for. We are not in need of a new dishwasher, but new dishwasher racks. The cost is ridiculous - over $150 just for the lower rack! The issue we and many have is the coating coming off due to rust underneath - in many, many places and it keeps increasing. Since the washer itself is still so good (and not that old, I might add), we are going to bite the bullet and get a new rack rather than a whole new dishwasher which would cost even more.

An eventful chilly day! I have a Bosch dishwasher and LOVE it. Quiet, efficient and did I say Quiet? Thanks for the soup recipe - love a great vegetable soup....be well.

The weather certainly has changed. Since I have been travelling, I have rediscovered the joys of hand washing dishes. If there is only 1 or 2 people, it works. It was so cold this morning (single panes too) that I put a cardigan over my night gown. I have all the ingredients for the soup so I will make it tomorrow.

Hi, I have a Bosch and I love it. They do not have a built in garburator so you have to take the little screen out from time to time and it's easy to clean. It uses very little water, gets the dishes clan and is VERY quiet. Mine is older than the model you are getting and i've had it for about 10 years. I hope it still keeps going. We had a lot of snow here, traffic was a mess but the storm is over. Beautiful chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers at the bird feeder. I'm about to make soup so I am going to make yours but have to substitute okra for the corn. Thanks for the recipe.
Stay warm! Ann

We also have a Bosch and it is SO quiet. You will enjoy it.

I am writing down your soup recipe. I love making soup and your recipe looks like it will be delicious.

Mmm, the soup looks yummy. I will have to try this. We are eating a lot of soup right now.

Our dishwasher died several years ago and we never replaced it. We have gotten used to doing the dishes by hand. It’s a bit of a chore sometimes, especially back when we would have 20 or so guests for a party. I never used paper or plastic, even then!

We have that Bosch and it is the best! So quiet. A good investment!

We replaced our 20 year old Asko dishwasher with a Bosch (not sure what model as we
are travelling) it is so quiet, also have a Bosch oven and induction cooktop which are the best.

Snow! Amazing. It has gotten cooler here too, but nothing like that. Still, it has made a wonderful difference from our hot, hot weather.

The soup looks yummy.

Soup looks delicious--and all ingredients I usually have around! Will make some tomorrow when the temperature is due to plummet again here (Massachusetts). It's been an odd season with oddly warm temperatures alternating with a day or two of chilly weather. We got a Bosch dishwasher several years ago and it's been great so far.

We have a Bosch and love it - very quiet and works well.

The weather is certainly chillier than it has been. Your soup looks like the perfect warming dish for this weather.
I washed dishes by hand most of the summer while we researched dishwashers. We settled on a Blomberg, also a German make, and I'm thrilled with the way it's been performing for the past 6 weeks. Dishes are sparkling!

Too bad about the dishwasher, but it sounds as if you've found a replacement you can live with. Your experience validates my refusal to leave the house while the dishwasher's running -- we've never been hit by such a flood, yet, but especially in the condo now, it could cause so much damage that I'm never willing to risk it -- and surprised at how many do.

Appliance these day do not last as long - our dryer went last month after only 10 years. Hope you get a long haul out of the new dishwasher. - Paula

Appliances give out without warning. Flooding is never good, but it happens to everyone eventually. Sounds like your flood was not to bad. Thank goodness. Your soup looks delicious. The cold is supposed to arrive here over night. A light snow is also predicted. Perfect for making soup. FYI - Regarding appliance delivery, if you have a Lowes, their policy is next day delivery and they take away the old appliance as well. Susan

Sorry about your dishwasher, but Bosch is a very good brand.
Like Frances,I never leave the house, while dishwasher or washing machine is running (or even go to bed-my friends had woken up to "the lake"in the apartment once, they even had to change the wood flooring)

It really has been a week for gathering all things cosy and comforting.....and soup fits that bill! I took a lot of walks in tje rain last week! The cold has moved in (too early!) and things like soup and apple crisp come into their own!

I am keen to compare the Bosch to our previous machine which was a Kitchen Aid and it gave us great service for many years.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I think the soup would be improved by using vegetable broth but I did not have any in the pantry so I used water...Spring is a lovely time of year...I love the spring bulbs ad flowers.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I have a friend who has an Asko and they are smaller...or perhaps you could find an apartment size dishwasher.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

It is crazy how expensive replacement parts cost!
The manufacturers must want us to replace the entire machine when we are faced with some wear and tear on parts...dishwashers have gone up in price just like everything else!

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Bosch must be doing a great business with so many happy owners who are eager to recommend their products.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

How was the soup? I am making chili and lasagne today...prepping ahead as I have some busy days ahead. I am hand washing too...I keep forgetting ti wear my rubber gloves and so my hands are a mess!

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I will be mindful of that food sieve gadget...thank you for that cautionary advice.
Snow is long gone but it is still chilly and there is more coming...we have oodles of the blue Stellar's Jays here which usually indicate a long cold winter.
Soup is perfect for a snowy day.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Hope you enjoy the soup...I think I could have used curry powder in place pf the dill weed.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Soup is so easy to make and you can clean out the fridge and crispers at the same time! Many people opt to wash dishes by hand...I love having a dishwasher for family events and dinner parties. I don't normally use paper plates but when I hosted a baby shower I opted for themed paper plates to go with the bunting and the balloons.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Another happy Bosch owner...do you have any other Bosch appliances?

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Where are you travelling ?
Bosch make quite a wide variety of appliances...I have a friend who has their washer and dryer and she is very happy with their performance.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Snow was a shock!
Melted now but still chilly so I am making chili con carne!

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

The weather has been unpredictable...we had such a sunny warm week before that Arctic front rolled in...chilly now but better than snow!

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Excellent...both great qualities in an appliance.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Oh I have never heard of that name...where did you find it in town?

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I might make a habit of only using the dishwasher in the daytime as the reports of super quiet operation will make it easier for us to watch TV in the family room which is off the kitchen. Imagine how your neighbours downstairs would react if they were flooded...sounds like one of the perks of being in the penthouse is avoiding floods from others!!!

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Gosh and some of my Mother's friends had their Maytags for 30 years or more...things do not last that long anymore.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Did it snow?
I looked at Lowe's but we got a better price elsewhere so we went with the sale price. The [prices were actually quite varied from store to store...which actually surprised me.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I would have been like your friends had I put ours on that night!!!
Fortunately we got off lightly.

Comforting warm autumnal food is just what we crave when the temperatures dip...good for you for getting out walking...my shin splint pain is easing by not walking much but my waist is increasing!

I'm happy with our Bosch - quiet - always use quick wash. Never rinse the dishes before putting them in. I would never leave a dishwasher unattended as the one we had in the condo was installed incorrectly. The wiring frayed in the door. Smelled smoke one night and the dishwasher was on fire. I was on council in our building years ago and dealt with numerous insurance claims regarding over flowing washing machines and leaking hot water tanks.

Oh my goodness! We’ve had dishwasher mishaps...and I’ve used a turkey baster to get that water out. lol
Sounds like you had a busy kitchen day, and that soup sounds good. I am plannng to do some cold weather cooking in the next few weeks, and freeze portions for my lunch. I love homemade soups!

I think you made a good choice in picking the Bosch. My daughter and her husband recently bought a new (to them) house and they had to do extensive renovations, but the previous owners did leave them with a Bosch dishwasher and it has been great!

Kristien62 said...

Thank heavens it didn't happen during the holidays. Ten years ago, our refrigerator conked out on Thanksgiving. What a mess! The soup sounds so simple and nourishing. I have to give it a try.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Oh you were so fortunate to be right there when that malfunction occurred....
what a nightmare to be the residents below in a condo flood! Hope that residents are made aware of the risks so it does not happen again.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

A turkey baster...I should have thought of that too!
Batch cooking and freezing individual portions is so wise when one is in the workforce...

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

The Bosch line is certainly getting a lot of praise...it sounds like we made the right choice!
