Two Yummy recipes from The Humble Bungalow Hostess

Good Morning from The Humble Bungalow!

I have a morning routine that I have pretty much kept constant since retiring.
Do you?

Morning coffee is sipped while browsing Instagram and my email.
Once dressed I pop a load of laundry in and tidy up the kitchen and have my breakfast...
if I am staying at home I'll open my Lap top and read some blogs or perhaps write a blog post...Chester has other ideas!

Chester sat on my laptop and conveyed that he had an ulterior motive...
how could I resist those eyes?

Positively beastly weather out there today
 gloomy grey and rainy
a perfect day to stay in and bake while keeping warm inside the kitchen.

No, I am not drinking rum I am making my Mother's Rum Balls.

The Eiffel Tower souvenir comes in handy when I need a ring holder!

You can coat them with icing sugar, cocoa, or chocolate sprinkles.

I also made the dough for cranberry citrus shortbread cookies.
Recipe can be found here.

Lots of noise is coming from the job site next door as there is a backhoe levelling out the dirt around the two houses.
The windows are in and the crews are putting gypsum on the walls inside of the house right next to ours.

Can you see the raindrops on the kitchen window?
Its raining sideways!

My Mother would have said
"It's raining cats and dogs!"

I plan to cozy up in the living room later with my knitting and a cup of tea.

I am still working on that lap blanket...
it is taking me a long time much longer than I would have predicted
as it is awkward juggling all the stitches on the circular needles
and the weight of the project is not comfortable to work on for too long.

This summer tote was a hostess gift from our DIL's mother.
Isn't it fabulous?
I love using it as a knitting bag too as it is commodious enough for the yarn as well as the lap blanket.

Time to close and put the kettle on...
Thank you so much for popping by The Humble Bungalow Blog today.

This is so spooky, Leslie. I thought of these rum balls yesterday. I've made them for the past two Christmases and my family loves them! So I bought the ingredients when out shopping yesterday and though I shared the recipe last year I had thought to keep it low-profile this year because of what you've been through. But seeing as you've made these, perhaps you won't mind if I link to the recipe again this year? They are just too delicious and so easy to make!
We've had some of those cats and dogs raining across the pond too :-(.
Hope you're coping with all the noise next door.
Hugs, x.

Your baking sounds delicious. I am making that same knit pattern into a baby afghan. I've put it aside for so many months that I wonder if I can pick it up again. I've also put aside a knitted cowl and a new dishcloth (new to me pattern). Oh dear! What was I thinking? Being a beginner knitter, I feel fearful about trying to pick them back up and figure out where I am!

Today was a work day so my routine changes now. I usually like to do some laundry, go for a walk and meet friends on my retired days. My mum used to make those rum balls but hasn't for a few years. Your living room looks cozy. I think that we may have rain all week but I'm off to South Granville tomorrow with a friend. It is time for a little Christmas shopping.

Unless I have an early gym class, I start my morning with fresh coffee and reading the news, mail, etc on my iPad. It’s my hour. No stress. It’s followed by breakfast and my shower and then the day begins.

Your rum balls are just what I need to make for an event this weekend. Have you ever substituted corn syrup? Maybe I should buy the Karo and not chance having them fail.

Chester is beautiful.

In reference to the rain, in France they say " Il pleut des cordes ". Literally, "It's raining in ropes". Just thought you might like that.

Please feel free to link to these recipes...I think I have made mom's recipe for rum balls every year since the children were small...I frequently give them away as Hostess gifts at Christmas...some things are just so good that they are worth sharing!

I have given up on several projects over the years...this one I am keen to finish as I want to be able to use it! I knit for an hour yesterday on the bulky project and this morning my hands are stiff!
I would encourage you to pick up one of your projects...as long as you have a pattern you can figure out where you are and if in doubt your local wool shopkeeper should be able to help you. Knitters are a friendly lot!

Oh I love that South Granville area for shopping...Anthropologie, the lingerie shop, Eileen Fisher, Meinhardts, Pottery Barn, West Elm...say hello for me and have fun!

Happy to be able to share them with you Ellie.

I have not substituted corn syrup...I only ever use the Caro for this recipe and it is very thick...you might try searching online and see if that is a substitution...it may well work. Good luck.

That sounds very descriptive much more so than cats and dogs!

Every time I walk in your neighbourhood I feel for you as I see all that digging and construction. I think a cosy afternoon with knitting would be a huge treat!

The hustle and bustle at the building site is noisy...I have learned to tune it out!
I missed seeing you at the knitting group...perhaps you will be able to attend the Christmas get together...we are donating to the TC fund for needy families again this year. Love to see what you are knitting too!

The rum balls are easy...just a wee bit messy to make as you roll them in your hands!

Yesterday was a great day for staying indoors and baking. The rum balls look delicious. It was nice to see the sun shine a wee bit today, but things are looking gloomy again now.
Stay cozy.

Thank you for the recipes, which I have pinned for later, and for the lovely thoughts of rain and chilly weather. I am in Southern California where on this Thanksgiving holiday it is predicted to be 90+*F as we bake, roast and toast (pun intended). This is my simple reminder that the grass is always greener! Thanks to you and your lovely blog community as I count my blessings on this American holiday.

The sun was a welcome sight indeed!
Gloomy this morning...and there is rain in the forecast for several days.
Knitting and teatime are definitely in the works!

Happy Thanksgiving!
Oh my you are having a heat wave...we have gloomy grey skies and it is raining.
There are areas that are preparing for flooding as rivers, creeks and streams are full and threatening to flow over their banks.
The attitude of gratitude serves us well.
Best wishes to you on this holiday.

Yum. How do you store the rum balls and for how long?

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I store them in an airtight container in a cool spot and we have traditionally made these about a month ahead of christmas to allow the flavours to meld...once the holidays arrive they do not last long because they get gobbled up!

Just to chip in here, I couldn't find Caro in the UK so I use golden syrup and the balls come out perfectly with this substitution.

I'll be making the rum balls tomorrow- just a quick question, do you freeze the dough for the citrus short bread? If so, how do you bake them once they are frozen? Thanks so much! Lisa S.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I put the citrus shortbread dough in the fridge for a few hours or you can leave it for a few days...am not too sure if it would freeze well or not but well worth trying.
