Autumnal Splendor....

Autumn is one of the most beautiful seasons...
rich in colour and texture,
this weekend we have been treated to clear blue skies and sunny warm days.

Perfect weather for walking...
and a bonus while we are at Quarter Deck Cottage on Pender Island.

Golden hues tinged with green.

We walked slowly so that I could stop and take pictures
besides the fact that I have been recently diagnosed with shin splints...
my doctor suggested that I slow my walking pace and perhaps the distance that I travel
to make sure that I have supportive shoes
to replace my walking shoes at least every year if not every 6 months.
This is a painful condition and so I am heeding his advice.

The distance we covered was just a tad under 3 km
the road was perfect for our walk
very little car traffic
quiet
homes and acreages dotted every so often along the byway
the leaves were stunning in their beauty
so picturesque.

This old home was situated at the end of the road overlooking the ocean.

I'd love to peek inside but this is as close as we could get to it.

The road curved ahead and we spied this boat...

We discovered a lovely sandy beach at the end of the road with a public beach access.
Mr. HB saw a mink run into the brush just ahead.

Kelp and maple leaves mingling together on the beach.

Walking with the leaves crunching neath our feet...
a glorious day
with dappled sunshine peeking through the canopy of trees.

Feeling such gratitude to be able to enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds us.

How was your weekend ?

Your photos are stunning. You could exhibit them. What type of camera do you use? My weekend was great. The garlic us planted in the raised bed. Tulip bulbs are in. We had brunch with a dear friend whose husband died over a year and a half ago. She is still grieving, but definitely still enjoying life. Her husband was a friend of ours too and would want her to continue loving life. My husband made homemade marshmallows to take to work. My they are good.

Your photos are lovely. I spent time raking leaves. It is bitterly cold outside with a fierce wind. Sunny then a snow squall then sunny again. It is supposed to be warmer on Monday but by Thursday not snow flurries but SNOW. So I am racing to finish the garden things that need to be done before winter really sets in. It has been a beautiful fall. I envy you
your autumn! Sorry to hear about the shin splints. I've had them and they are very painful...

Hello. Shin splints are not fun! My legs/body are sore from yesterday's 8 mile mountain hike. I'm use to cycling, but used different muscles and boy am I tired today! But it was fun. Looks like you are having a beautiful fall season

Beautiful pictures and how lovely to get a different 'view' from Pender Island.

Maple leaves and kelp.....aren't we lucky to live in this marvelously quirky, beautiful place?
Your weekend sounds perfect.

Oh, your walks are incredibly gorgeous. Sorry about the shin splints.

Kelp!? Not sure we have any here...
Seeing your photos is like being there myself!
Sounds like good advice from your doctor. Slowing down has its rewards.

How wonderful - your pictures are just gorgeous. It is a beautiful, sunny fall day in Toronto as well but our colours aren't as good this year. It has been so hot that I think a lot of them will just blow off before they have a chance to change colour.
My walking has also been a bit curtailed this autumn due to what they thought was just a soft tissue injury - but I'm waiting to hear from my doctor at the moment as she is a bit worried that I may have a small fracture. I have been missing my long walks as this is my favourite time of year for that. I hope that you get lots of rest in between walks so that the shin splints heal soon.

My pleasure! Fall colours do make for a pretty fabulous seasonal photo shoot!

I use my IPhone to take all the photos here on the blog and on my Instagram page.
Sounds like you had a great weekend...grief is unpredictable and your friend must appreciate your support.
I have never made homemade marshmallows...are they very difficult to make?

The fall colours are exquisite...we are so fortunate that we have such a beauty surrounding us here in BC.
Enjoy your week Madame.

Yes there is that...the raking...we have a tall arbutus beside our bungalow that drops copious amounts of leaves and they look so messy in between the raking.
Sounds chilly...brrr...snow already? Time to get out the woolly sweaters, scarves and mitts.
How long did you suffer from the shin splints? My GP could not give me a time frame for them to heal.

Your bike holidays sound like such fun...the last one was so scenic too.
Perhaps a soak in the tub with epsom salts will help those achy muscles?
The fall colour is amazing...are you seeing signs of fall in Colorado?

It's a pretty time of year...I think of it as the "last hurrah" before the gloomy rain and fog set in for the winter!

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

We are indeed fortunate to live here....I count my blessings every day.

This walk was particularly lovely...will try to capture more of our walks and share them here on the blog.

Kelp and seaweed are common here on the beaches...hope you enjoyed tagging along on the walk :-))

We met a couple from Toronto on our walk...they told us about the strange weather back east and are really enjoying their trip here....it is their first time out to the west coast and they plan to come back again.
Hope you don't have a fracture...things go amiss when we are active. I wondered if I had a fracture too but the doctor says that shin splints are very common...and I was hoping to be building bone density for years to come by walking but I may have to take up swimming and go for shorter slower walks.
Take care and enjoy your week Margie.

They are very easy to make and so much better than the store bought. Plus you can decorate them with colored sugar that creates a marble effect.

How utterly beautiful... I love Autumn, but it's rare to see the Autumn colours like this in Australia.

Wonderful photos! I hope your shin are better soon!

You totally outdid yourself with all of these exquisite photos! They are so beautiful. The boat is wonderful, it must even be more amazing in person.

Sorry about the shin splints - I know they can be very painful. Hope you feel better soon and can get back to your regular walking routine again.

Like you, I love Autumn, especially October, so lovely in its blues and gold.

Instead of all the "no's" of November, I prefer to think of November and December together as a time of year that is "cozy and festive" brightened with colours of the harvest and creature comforts. I have a new red plaid vest to add cheer to the season and I get compliments each time I wear it.

Your walk is perfection. You are an amazing "artist" to capture all that beauty to share with us. The colours bring me such joy. I always think of Frost's poem The Road Not Taken at this time of year.

I'm glad you're enjoying your cottage so much.

Wishing you healthy shins and many more happy walks.

Ok, so how cute is that boat? Thanks for sharing your stroll through the countryside.

We have 4 distinct seasons here and autumn is one of the most dramatic...cannot compare the spectacular colours to any of the other seasons.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

It makes it easy capturing beauty when there are so many opportunities for a snapshot!

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Thank you Adrienne!
I had no idea that one could develop these after walking for so many years...I suppose its "wear and tear!"

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Honey Bee I have not heard of the NO's of November...that is a new way of focusing on the month to come. I am going to read Frosts' poem after I finish typing my response to you...
thank you for sharing your insights with us today.

I discovered that shin splints are very common with runners and walkers...and not just the elder walkers and runners!

This weather is such a gift!
Perfect for outdoor activities like walking and wandering in a beautiful garden like you have been doing. Hope the birthday celebrations were fun too!

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

You are most welcome...I hope to post some more photos in a few days.

Its a really creative way to "decorate" outdoors...I just wonder if the deer will enjoy it too as they have eaten all the flowers off our chrysanthemums on the porch!

I've just found your blog...it's lovely:) and I'm wondering how I didn't come across it sooner.
Your bungalow is utterly charming and reminds me of a tiny estate here in Birmingham England called Austin Village. The little bungalows were shipped all the way from Canada around the time of the 1st World War. They were either for Canadian Airmen or Canadian workforce at the Herbert Austin Factory. The whole estate is now a conservation area. I'd like to thing that one day I would buy one and seeing yours has given me ideas for how lovely the interiors could look.

Beautiful photos! I’m sorry about the shin splints! How annoying! I had a time where I was a runner, believe it or not, and that came to an end with shin splints. Interestingly for me as I have the flattest feet known to man, once I switched my walking on the treadmill to a slight elevation, I haven’t had a problem since. And I got inserts made for my shoes.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Welcome to the blog Adrienne!
Oh I must do some research on that little Austin village in Birmingham England...it sounds quite lovely! Thank you for sharing that information with me...perhaps some other readers will also check it out.
We have been very happy in our wee bungalow...it is small but we really don't need a huge home to be content. The arts and crafts furniture and accents were specifically designed to be simple. almost organic in nature and colour. While we are not puritans we do strive to keep things in our bungalow that are reminiscent of the era....hope that you will share your pursuit of owning a bungalow with us.

This island is quite quiet, especially after the summer visitors have left...we quite enjoy the slow pace and routines that revolve around our walks, and simple meals.
We do not celebrate All Saints Day...it's a good opportunity to remember those who have passed on and to pay your respect to their memory.
Hope you have a lovely weekend.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Thank you Stephen! We have seen quite a few deer and some of the stag have very impressive antlers...they are magnificent when we spy them but their natural camouflage colouring helps them from standing out too much.
So I may have to try a treadmill....and inserts...both great ideas...will look into those options.
