Wednesday walking, weights and the winning entry...

Thank you for all your entries in the Humble Bungalow Blog Book giveaway.

Book written by Ted Kennedy Watson

It took awhile to write out all the names, fold them and mix them up in the bowl.

Please send me an email at bungalowhostess@gmail.com
with your name and mailing address and I will pop it in the post.

The weather has been very cold and walking has been a challenge...
but "no excuses!"

Wool hat, scarf, vest, puffer coat, gloves, boots...
I have not met very many people out walking or running.
It feels odd to be out and about in such a scenic place that usually teems with runners and walkers.

My skin and lips have been very dry as a result of the cold temperatures
so I have been slathering on the lip gloss and face serum.
Drinking lots of tea to hydrate and offer some warmth on the inside!

I am adding some weight training to my regime.
Our bungalow is far too small to install a treadmill or elliptical so free weights are going to be it.
I will do some research online and look for an exercise program.

Do you use weights?
Is there a website that you can recommend?
How is your New Year shaping up so far?
Any big plans?

Thank you for stopping by The Humble Bungalow Blog.

Dear Hostess - love your gentle blog. Your interests in fashion, cooking, gardening, travel, literature, family mirror my own. Following your transition from work to retirement has been invaluable as I approach the very same transition. Do you have a YMCA near where you live? They are wonderful for providing a variety of exercise experiences at a very reasonable rate. Usually a personal trainer is available (at no extra charge) to design a program and lead you through it a couple of times. If that doesn't work out there are all kinds of classes that are included in the membership fee - Zumba, yoga, water fitness, etc. You can experiment until you find something you like or mix things up,if you crave variety. Wishing you well with your fitness goals.-runcarla

When I started using weights (long time ago, don't worry,I had breaks of years and years :-)),there was not even web.
I've found Arnold Schwarzenegger's book than(before all of his scandals...) Bodyshaping for Women and still like it very much. The basics are here, even later in posh, modern gyms, the machines were on same principles, only modernized,as well as personal trainers(last time about 6-7 years ago)
Very good question-I don't use weights now,but your post is an inspiration-I'm curious about all answers here
You are a brave walker

Ah, Leslie, I was going to recommend finding a personal trainer but I see that Runcarla has already done so. Before my knee injury got the better of me, our entire family went to a personal trainer 2-3 times a week. All but my daughter benefited from the training. (Years later we discovered she has PCOS, which has multiple treatments.) I was within 5 lbs. of my goal weight and then the trainer moved. I managed to keep up the routine until December of that year, during which I had a milestone birthday, Christmas, and so on...I have tried other trainers but I have not been satisfied with their expertise or they are a half hour away and it seems a little ridiculous to me to spend an hour driving for fitness. Ah, the joys of rural life. There is one more "gym," about 15 minutes away that I have just learned about, but lethargy has set in and here I sit.
So once I am ready to get up and out of the chair, my plan will be to make an appointment with the trainer. If the cost is a bit prohibitive, I will ask that he/she design a program that is gentle on my knees that I can do at home and then have a tune-up every month or six weeks. If I can work the cost into my budget, and I like the trainer, I will sign up!
Speaking of the cold, I encountered two white-outs driving home from school last night and saw three snow lightning blasts. This morning the snow was blowing horizontally out my windows and one side of my car is completely covered with a huge drift!
Best of luck to you finding the program that will work out for you. Carol

What fun! I'm sure Suz will love her book. But I just wanted to complement you on your lovely handwriting, Leslie. Mine seems to have got messy after years of keyboard tapping but yours is so pretty and elegant.

I do use weights - 3 pound and 5 pound dumbbells. I have read various articles in magazines over the years and just do my own thing with the weights - biceps, triceps, overhead presses, etc. Unfortunately I am not as faithful with them as I should/could be. I'm not one for going to classes or a gym, I'd rather exercise on my own. So doing my own research is the way to go, for me.

Good for you to add weights to your already healthy lifestyle. I can certainly help you with a program that would include your major muscle groups. I'm still going to bootcamp 2-3 times a week which includes lots of core strength. I also attended a great circuit program (cardio & strength) at Henderson for years that you might want to consider in the future (although you live closer to the Y). Cheers!

Hi runcarla,
Your advice is very welcome...aquafit appeals to me as does Zumba.
We have a YMCA nearby and there are many recreation centres located throughout our city. I just need to do a bit of research and try a few classes to see if they are a good fit.
I have a friend who had a couple of sessions with a personal trainer and she walks and works out a few times a week and looks fabulous!

Thank you Dottoressa. I will go to the library and see if there are some books that might steer me in the right direction and I look forward to hearing from other "weight lifters!"

Driving for an hour to get to a trainer seems daunting to me...you are very dedicated and to be commended. I hope the other gym, the one that is closer will work for you.
Those white outs would be terrifying! I cannot imagine how you stayed on the road. I have never heard of snow lightning blasts before...gosh you are a brave woman driving in those conditions. Stay safe and good luck with your fitness regime.

Why thank you Mary!
I have deviated from the MacLeans Method of handwriting that we were taught in school! My former teachers would probably roll over in their graves if they saw it now.

I have started with a few simple reps and will see how things go as I get accustomed to the 5 pound weight. I don't want to go at it too hard too fast as I am rather scared about injuring myself...a personal training session is on my list of things to do.

Thank you twix...you are an inspiration.
Boot Camp 2-3 times a week shows how dedicated you are to fitness. I am not sure that I could even do boot camp!
I have been looking into aquafit classes as I love the water and think it would be kind to my joints.

I need a gym to stick with exercising. It's twelve years this month. Ideally I go three times a week for a yoga-like class. Whenever I'm on vacation, the body gets out of shape more quickly as I age. I know I should use the machines the gym offers, it's just boring. I do need weights. Personal trainers are out of my budget. If you find a good video, I'd love to know too. I need to see instructions several times to get things right.

I admire all your walking. I live near busy streets and it's become scary trying to get across, especially at crosswalks.

Brave woman! I have declined walking offers this week for fear of falling. Once it is less slippery, I think that I will go to the community centre next door. I will get a month pass for seniors and will book an appointment for an intro to the gym. I've worked with a trainer before but it cost about $500 a month to share 2 sessions a week with my daughter. I've got my 5 pound weights out in the den but I have not used them. My sister goes to boot camp but P.E. was my worst subject and at almost 65, I still feel that I need assistance and support to feel comfortable with physical activity other than walking. We have a pool in our complex so swimming or aquafit would work. I like your hat with the brooch on it.

Wow, thank you so much! This is really a great pick me up as I have been sick with a cold since Dec 28. Finally starting to feel better ( careful out there-it is a bad one) and now I will a lovely new book to read. Again thank you very much- Suz from Vancouver

We incorporate light weights in my aerobics classes and the Thursday Zumba class adds toning sticks (2 1/2) for 20 minutes of the class. I like using resistance bands to do stretches, especially for my shoulders which are quite tight.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Some of us do better with regular routines incorporated into our week...I totally understand this and think it might be key to staying fit. One of the women that I play bridge with says that she watches women knitting while ridding stationary bikes at her gym! I think we need to do whatever it takes to keep us motivated and strong!
Busy streets do not make for relaxed walking...I avoid the busier walkways on the seafront! Take care at those crosswalks...they are not always safe.

I bought a Maxi-Climber. It simulates rock climbing, easy to assemble and folds for easy storage. A total body workout!

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

We don't have icy streets right now but there is ore snow in the forecast...
$500 a month is expensive! I hope you can find something that works for you but does not deplete your pension income! PE was my worst subject too :-((
Rosacea is flaring up now because of the cold on my face during my walks so I am not going to be walking for a bit but doing in home exercises...my skin is so dry that it is starting to peel!
Oh I would absolutely LOVE having a pool so handy...
I bought that pin and hat to wear in Paris...it is so cozy and keeps my ears warm.
Take care Madame.

Congratulations Suz!
I hope you feel better soon.
I will get this book wrapped up and off to you this weekend.
Take care

Sounds like you enjoy Zumba...and adding those extra stretches to keep you limber is so important. Massage therapy might help with your tight shoulders...those registered practitioners are very good...it hurts at first but there is pain relief afterwards.

I have joined a gym, which I am disliking intensely. My husband thought it would be fun to go together. I do have a few small free weights at home and I should start using them.

Anonymous said...

Be careful with that weight. I was told not to use it by a very reputable weight trainer. It can do more harm then good.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Sounds like you have found something good that works for you...well done!

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I am still looking into other options like aquafit but this new kettle bell even though it is light is a good workout for me.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I think you have to be careful with ANY fitness routine...cautioning clients is not at all uncommon.
This 5 pound weight is really not too heavy, thats why I opted for this one to start with...hence baby steps!
One needs to be mindful of how you use it, keep your core muscles engaged and not put unnecessary strain your back. If you fling this about with poor posture and a sense of abandon you'll probably be injured...use controlled moves.
BTW I carry heavier things on a regular basis like my grandchildren and groceries...I plan to up the weight when I no longer feel the benefit.

I don't have any exercise plans for this year; but nevertheless this year, so far has been fantastic!. My dogs (or me?) have excelled in their training, and our leaking house problems (I think?) are solved.
Keep up the good work Leslie.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I didn't know that you were having problems with your home...that sounds frustrating. It is new and so beautifully decorated that water would be a very tedious and trying issue.
One expects problems in old homes like ours...you will feel relief if the leaks have been fixed! Good job on the dog training!

Oh my, how brave you are to go walking in that cold, and it does look cooollld! You are an inspiration, I used to be very good at doing weights at home, but have gotten slack. However, I go to a personal trainer once a week so that keeps me somewhat on track with weights and stretching. I am on my own for the walking, which is difficult in the extreme heat as well as in cold. When we visit cold climates I have lots of skin troubles, I guess from dehydration, so am interested to read the extra care you need to take. Happy New Year!

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Patricia you are so fortunate to have all your ducks in a row!
The skin troubles that I have inherited are from my Norwegian background...rosacea has it challenges and the skin can be red and rough after exposure and takes time to heal. I knew that I should avoid the sun but forgot about the gusty winds. so I will retreat to the basement for my kettle bell work outs until the weather is more forgiving.

Walking here although in the countryside is a death trap with tractors going too fast and dogs off lead so I do my exercise in the safety of the pilates studio and there is a Bodytone class using weights on a Thursday lunchtime which I have added to my regime. So 2 pilates classes, one Bodytone and one yoga are my effort along with always taking the stairs rarely the escalator or lift. Wherever I walk in town I try to do it quickly!!
