currently they are staying in Wellington
we have heard that the magnitude was 7. 5 and that there were tsunamis predicted...
Thankfully they are safe...
Their hotel is located very close to the waterfront and they were evacuated from their hotel after the quake in the middle of the night.
They have been allowed back inside to their suite.
Plaster has fallen down inside the hotel and there are cracks in the ceilings...
some apartments nearby on Market Lane have sustained significant damage.
The live streaming NZ news coverage is actually quite good...
(I admit that I am not a news junkie)
It is so different when ones family is in the middle of an event.
We have been able to chat with them on What's App.
They are planning to travel to Blenheim in the Marlborough area on the South Island where family live.
The ferries, railways, buses are not running today.
Some roads are cracked, there are land slides, buildings are damaged and some homes have collapsed.
We know the risks of earthquakes as we are in a zone where two underground plates are merging... the "Big One" is predicted but we do not know when it will happen.
Our earthquake kit is much better stocked than before...
we have added warm blankets, tarps, tools, gloves, canned food, a cook stove,
and many more small items that may come in handy
I hope we will never need to use it but at least we have a few things put by.
I hope to calm down now that we know they are safe...
I am planning to pick up my knitting needles and start another project.
The baby bonnet for Mira is finished...
it knit up quite quickly and I am excited to see if it fits!
My knitted poncho is finished...
I wore it two days in a row!

Lovely baroque pearl brooch, a gift several years ago from darling daughter.
Feeling so thankful and grateful...

I've not been connected at all today, so your post is the first I've heard of the earthquake. So glad you were able to contact your daughter and her husband in NZ. Your poncho looks cozy and so suitable for this weather we're having.

Your poncho is lovely. I wish it was cool enough here to wear something similiar. Sometimes I don't think we will ever have cold weather or rain again.

It was a big shake last night, and about 400+ aftershocks including some big ones tonight, but we are all fine. Your son in law, being a kiwi should be fine too, he knows what these are like.
Hopefully they can continue on their honeymoon, although travel may be very difficult in the next few weeks.
Do they have somewhere safe to stay now?

I am so glad your daughter and her husband are safe in Wellington. Poor New Zealand has had very bad luck with earthquakes the past several years. We were in Christchurch a month before the big quake in 2011, and are very thankful we missed being there in all the destruction. Your knitting is very beautiful, the bonnet and poncho are Perfection!
So pleased to hear that your daughter and son-in-law are safe. My daughter returned home from a holiday in Thailand exactly one week before the big Tsunami in 2004 and we watched news coverage of her hotel being inundated with water. It's just dumb luck but we are all grateful.
So happy they are safe! You must have been so worried, thank goodness you were able to be in touch with them. I hope the rest of their travels are calm. XO
So glad to hear they are safe - some friends left Christchurch just the day before the big quake a few years ago and with the time difference and all we weren't sure if they were safe for a day or tow. And very wise of you to also be prepared - better to never need it than to be kicking yourself afterwards for not doing it! Take care
I am so glad they are safe and hope you can relax until they return. Last year, my son and his wife traveled to the Caribbean and, of course, they had a hurricane. All was well, but I couldn't rest until they called.
I love the hat for Mira. Technically, I know how to knit and love it. But my creations come out uneven or wonky in some way. I need someone to help me learn the fine points. Do you make house calls?

They are still in the hotel by the waterfront in Wellington but because of the plaster coming off the walls and the cracks in their suite they were upgraded to the penthouse suite where there is no damage. We saw news coverage from the front of their hotel! People were outside huddled on benches in blankets...did not see them though as they were apparently standing out of the cameras' range.
They plan to take the ferry to the south island if they are able or fly if the ferries are not running...the family have a large grove and thankfully there will be plenty of room for them once they arrive.
I forgot to mention...glad to hear that you are OK.
I have been a wee bit obsessed about their safety as you might well imagine!

I do hope they are safe and sound and that there are no further quakes...
We do need to be prepared...perhaps we will never need the kits and supplies but I would not want to be left high and dry with nothing...the authorities are saying that we need to be prepared to survive a week without any outside help.
My knitting is far from perfect!
I think a few quirks add character!
I think I am going to make a vest next...have seen a pattern that I like by Sirdar and may take the plunge and buy some yarn.
