Comfort in the routines...

In seeking comfort...

I look to the simple and quiet routines that are found so surprisingly in every day domesticity.

Home keeping.

Cooking, cleaning, baking, sweeping, washing...they all feed my spirit.

Weeding, raking, digging in the dirt...
tending the garden
softly connecting with Nature
elevate flagging spirits.

Sitting on the porch having a wee break.
A time to reflect on all that I have to be grateful for in life.

I've just started Edith Wharton's 1905 classic House of Mirth
I've just finished chapter One and I know I am going to LOVE this book!

Good to the last drop!

Sorry to post as "anon" - just easier with my crazy computer today !
I do love your blog so much - it inspires me to try to lead a 'simple' contented life.
Your words and pictures always boost my spirits.
Thank you !

I wish I found the same comfort in domestics as you do. I am such an impatient soul...

LOVE the House of Mirth! When you are done, you can read The Age of Innocence (the Scorsese film is very true to that book , btw)

I'm so happy to read a post like this...I sometimes wonder if taking comfort in these things is lost on the younger generation. I hear way too much of how busy and hectic lives are, and can't think of a single person I know younger than myself that even cleans their own home, let alone takes any pleasure in it.

Thank you Janet...the garden is my sanctuary.
Today was a great day just taking care of the house and a little indulgence reading on the front porch.

Oh computer woes...they frustrate me no end.
Anon is fine with me...and really when you come right down to it...simple just feels right.
Less stress more honest...take care.

It's not that I have always felt this way...
I have grown to love the simple things in life.
I used to be VERY Impatient...Mr. HB remembers this trait oh so very well and could tell you stories!

I understand that it might be a luxury to enjoy cleaning a home...in many families both parents work and it is exhausting when you have children to tend to as well...
We do have a wonderful and energetic woman who helps us clean one day each week for 2 hours.

I agree... Now that I am retired. Unfortunately balancing a demanding job and a home was often beyond frustrating! Now it is a pleasure to piddle as I please in the kitchen, in the yard... Or not! Your flowers are lovely...

If you ever come east and south to Massachusetts, you will have to visit Edith Wharton's home, which she designed herself, in Lenox in the Berkshires of Western Massachusets. She was a fascinating character, excellent writer, and her estate, called The Mount, and its gardens are magnificent!

I spent a week with friends in northern Germany and we ate every meal outside and sat outside inbetween. Back in TX, it is too hot to even eat breakfast outside. It is so life giving to spend time outside. Add in a lovely drink and a favorite pastime (I would have my knitting) and life doesn't get much better. Enjoy!
