Skincare and make up Hostess Style ~ in response to a reader

One of the many things that I enjoy about blogging
is receiving private emails from readers.

Once in awhile, a question is posed or a specific request slips into the mail.
Often that prompts or inspires me to write a blog post.

This past weekend I was asked my opinion and recommendations on "green" skincare products. This is an area that I cannot address without a significant amount of time and research...so I will leave that to those who are much more qualified.

I bow to the experts at The Environmental Working Group.

This site is user friendly and one can look up many of the products currently on the market and read about the pros and cons of the ingredients.

If you are interested in what I have discovered that works for me
I am happy to share...keep reading.

My skin is mature, sensitive and I have rosacea.

I have discovered that skin is a reflection of genetics and general health.
Our skin says much about our lifestyle and what we eat.

Cosmetics can augment and enhance beautiful skin,
or they can cover up a problematic complexion.

I indulged in a professional Hydra Facial at the Spa and it was amazing...
a specialized machine was used to cleanse my skin,
a gentle peel was applied that unclogged pores,
emollient serums followed and when the facial was finished
my skin felt soft, supple and it glowed.
I plan to go back for another facial in a few months...
perhaps after the summer season.

Hostess Skin care Tips...

Start by choosing fresh fruits and vegetables,
drinking lots of water and eating small portions of protein.
Exercise (for me that means walking and also practising Yoga),
Aim for 8 hours of sleep
Reduce stress as much as possible
Wear sunscreen and or avoid the sun altogether.
Embrace joy and beauty everyday
Adopt the attitude of gratitude and give thanks...
Smile!

For things that you can buy pop into your local pharmacy
or the beauty counter in your department store.

I opt for a mix of high and low priced potions.

For those that do no "stay on the skin" I use a less expensive but a quality line...
there are many good ones out there you just need to experiment to see which ones work for your skin type.

My skin is prone to rosacea so I need to treat it kindly...
Gentle Avene products work for me.
Anti redness cleansing milk and mask are two in my skincare arsenal.
I avoid hot water.

The more expensive Spa line by Methode Physiodermie...
for the products that stay on and those that need to perform.

I love the Bio-Gommage
which exfoliates efficiently with a minimum of irritation.
I use it once a week.
My skin gets slightly pink but it doesn't stay that way for long.

The anti redness emulsion I use sparingly each morning
followed by the Emulsion for Sensitive Skin.

Then I wait a few minutes before applying my make up.

Make up is light and takes 5 minutes.

5 products for daytime = 5 minutes

Mineral make up
Eye brow tint
eye shadow
mascara

Lipstick

SPF 20 mineral make up
use with a light hand or for more coverage it can be built up
used with a big brush it is easy to apply.

Amethyst eye shadow by La Bella Donna
an everyday colour for my hazel coloured eyes.

For evening
I simply add blush and eye liner for a bit more of a dramatic effect
and apply a darker shade of lipstick.

I have posted before about skincare and make up...

I love the following quote...

The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mode but the true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives the passion that she shows. The beauty of a woman grows with the passing years.

Hope that your week is off to a great start.

Getting My Happy On continues ~ Grandchildren, a kind gesture, a gift in the mail and a win ~

Our darling Henry enjoyed exploring the "spare lot" on our street.
On this site we have some driftwood benches and a table,
a tire swing, rope swing and a wee lending library.
There are trees and a grassy meadow where children love to run.

Play is serious business...
first you need a plan
then you need to execute the plan
then organize all the pieces
sit back and discuss what will happen next.

Isla and Henry played together collaborating on the building of the tower
they decided on the roles of the players
and then they worked out the scenario...
meanwhile as I looked on
Mira sat on my lap and we played with the shape sorter.

The fellow who owns and operates the excavator that is working on the site next door
noticed that Grammy and three wee ones were at the window watching the action and the steady stream of trucks.

When we all went for a walk past the site he suggested that the grandchildren might like to sit in the cab of the machine...
he didn't have to wait long before he got an enthusiastic response!

My goodness that was a kind gesture and a wonderful highlight for our wee ones.
Smiles all round!

I received a thoughtful gift in the mail this week.
Earplugs!
These will help muffle the noise...
love the shade of green too!

Thank you R!

In other "green news"...
I purchased this organic Physician's Formula mascara awhile back.
I love the formula but cannot get used to using the spiky plastic brush.
It has been a messy and frustrating experience
so I decided that I would give up and move on...

Dr. Hauschka mascara is back on the job
with a bristle style brush for an easier application.

I made a yummy prime rib dinner with Yorkshire pudding on Sunday
we ate the leftovers on Monday
Mr. HB made some beef sandwiches to take to work.
Probably the last roast for the season.

My back has been stiff and sore since Mom passed away.
(I will book a massage when the bulk of mom's estate is settled)

Yoga is really helping limber up the muscles and the back seems to be on the mend.
Plus I am sleeping better since going back to the Yoga Studio.
(I love a decent night of sleep)

My Yoga mat is falling apart...
wee bits of the mat are left behind after my practise so I must find another one asap!

This is the mat that the cat scratched a few years ago

Swimming fish amid the lily pads...

I wonder if any of you have had a similar experience with your cats...
any thoughts on a thick good quality replacement mat?

We won a strawberry planter from the Garden Centre!
These planters are quite expensive so I have never bought one but when one gets the call that one is waiting to be picked up you waste no time and start the car!

Our neighbour across the street put this plant pot on the boulevard...
free for the taking so I grabbed it and planted a white hydrangea in it.

How is your week going so far?

Snow Day, Flowers, Candles, the Gym and I could use your help...

Thank you for stopping by The Humble Bungalow.
The past post on women generated numerous comments, emails and there was a wee bit of controversy.

The blog posts here in The Humble Bungalow are varied and focus on
beauty, joy, cooking, home keeping
are polite
rest assured
the mood here is peaceful and calm.

This week has been a busy one and I have done a little "fluffing" in our home.
Scented candles and fresh flowers are two of my favourite affordable luxuries.
Its the little things that make life at home more enjoyable.
Flowers and fragrance
light and warmth.

TEA!
Time for a cup of Tea
decaf Yorkshire blend is my daily brew.
I enjoy sipping from a pretty mug like this one from Emma Bridgewater.

Snowdrops are dainty, sweet and we have planted then in our garden.

Yes that IS snow...
it was falling most of the day.

The black mondo grass is peeking through the blanket of snow.

You may be surprised to hear
I've taken the plunge and joined a gym.

Dominique, a reader of my blog,
emailed me and suggested this particular gym
  I am very grateful.
Thank you!

The gym is for the over 55 group and located not too far from The Humble Bungalow.
A personal trainer is teaching me how to use the equipment and is assessing my levels and recommending how long and at what levels I need to be working.
I have worked out 3 times this week and my muscles are slightly tender.

It feels good to be actively working out to change my shape.
I have come to the gym somewhat reluctantly...
I was hoping not to pay for fitness but I have not had much success recently with my walking.
The weather has kept me indoors more often and I have gained weight.

The weight training should speed up my metabolism and I am hopeful that the scale will reflect all my efforts in due course.

The trainer told me to stay off my scale for the first month...
muscle weighs more than fat and she does not want me to get discouraged.

My goal is to go to the gym 2-3 times a week.
The people are friendly and the staff are knowledgable.
The space is clean and the atmosphere is quiet and relaxed.

After my work out I went to the mall and bought a new bra, two magazines and a new mascara.
My mascara had passed its use by date and I thought I would try a less expensive brand but I still want to use one that is free of nasty ingredients.
Physician's Formula makes this one so I will test it out and see if it delivers on the promise of fuller lashes.

My workout has left me feeling weary tonight and I am happy to relax on the sofa and watch some TV with my husband.

I have a question for you...
It is my hope that you can help me find a perfect
or close to perfect
basic white Tee shirt.

I want one that is simple and very plain
no logos or writing or pattern on the front
in a cotton that has some weight to it
so it does not cling.

I have spent so much time trying to find one in the local shops
so far I have come up empty handed...
it should be easy to find
I am not sure why I am having such trouble.

So I figured you might have the answer and be able to steer me in the right direction...

Thank you for dropping by and I hope that you have a wonderful weekend.

Colour me Coral for Spring...

Coral seems to be "the shade" for Spring.
It keeps popping up on my radar...

Coral, coral and more coral!
Shops showcasing the new season Spring fashion collections and at the cosmetics counters.

Fortunately I can wear coral...
if you cannot there are lots of other ways to add a smidgeon of coral.
Think of all the coral accessories you could wear.

Belts, necklaces, bangles, shoes, hand bags, scarves, and nail polish.

My "colours" are those of Cool Winter.

"Bittersweet" is the shade of coral suggested for my colouring.

My new London Fog Trench coat in navy with white polka dots.
New Lipstick by L'Oreal in the shade called "Everbloom."

The Dior coral polish is lovely.
The shade is Adventure #551.
The formula is easy to apply and my nails shine with a bright pop of colour.

The young receptionist at my RMT's office complimented on how pretty my nails looked,
as did the middle aged sales clerk at the pharmacy,
the lovely woman who owns the consignment shop
and
the cute teenage clerk at the grocery store Peppers in the Cadboro Bay Village!

It seems to appeal to women of all ages.

Our lovely DIL chose this shade for me
she packaged up a thoughtful gift pack of nail products for my birthday
which I am enjoying immensely!

There is something so uplifting about buying a new shade of lipstick.
My grandmother said she would do without hose, or new clothes in favour of a new red lipstick.
I now understand what she meant when she told me that many years ago.
~ Cheap and cheerful ~

I wore this to the bridge luncheon and fundraiser at my club.
It was an interesting group of players.
80 keen players mostly women gathered together for a tasty lunch and an afternoon of cards.
I looked around the room and noticed that there were many well turned out ladies.
Most had grey hair, were dressed very smartly and wore statement jewelry.
Bold ethnic and artisan earrings and necklaces that were on the larger scale.
Many women opted for silk scarves tied casually around their necks.

OOTD
Calvin Klein ponte knit pants and a black and white tunic top
new Pegabo flats
white scarf
arm full of my silver bangles
dangly quartz earrings that my daughter made for my birthday
London Fog trench coat

Hellebore

Hope that your weekend is full of fun and laughter.
Don't forget to stop and smell the flowers!

Beauty and the Brow

It is International Woman's Day!

Today I am focusing on Beauty...
which truly is in the eye of the beholder.

"Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart."
                               ~ Khalil Gibran ~

The focus of today's post is the brow...

Personally I feel that make up should be used with a light touch to look like you, only better!
My routine is simple and quick and I prefer the "no make up look."

You may ask why do I bother?
In a nutshell, it makes me feel better about myself.

Powder foundation, a quick sweep of eye shadow, followed by mascara all by Jane Iredale.
Followed by light dusting with Bobbi Brown Bronzer to highlight my cheekbones.
This can all be done in about 5 minutes or less.

BTW ~ I no longer use a lash curler as I noticed too many of the lashes were falling out.

My eyebrows are thinner due to a thyroid condition and I have quite a few white hairs now
which makes them almost disappear.

Professional tinting at the Spa lasts about 6 weeks which covers the white and grey hairs.
Unfortunately no amount of dye will give the illusion of fullness and for that
I went to Sephora.

Bobbi Brown makes a brow pencil which is easy to use.
The soft formula allows for precise filling in of the areas that need a little fullness and definition.
It comes with a sharpener which is convenient to keep the tip sharp making it much easier to apply.

I also picked up my birthday bonus gift.

Marc Jacobs eye liner and a small lipstick.

I use an old mascara wand to brush my brows before applying Maybelline Brow Drama.
The brow drama is tinted and has a gel which keeps brows in place
then I use the Bobbi Brown brow pencil to fill in any gaps.
I do not tweeze my brows.
I use a small pair of scissors to clip any hairs that grow too long and to maintain their shape.
You can have this done at the Spa if you so desire.

The results of just these 3 products are quite dramatic...
brows "frame" the face.
If you have ever seen anyone who has shaved off their brows you will understand what I mean.

Have you noticed women that are wearing "too much" make up?
I wonder if they are trying to hide their age, ashamed perhaps that they are not youthful.

Too much make up can them look even older...
lighter formulas used sparingly are far more flattering.

Be comfortable in your own skin
rejoice
you are a woman of a certain age
there is no shame in that

hold your head high
walk with confidence
embrace your years
you have earned respect
and you have wisdom.

Focus on healthy eating, drink lots of water, maintain a good skincare regime.

If your budget allows for it have a professional facial every month or so...
and please remember to SMILE!
A smile perks up the corners of the mouth and lightens up the face.

Celebrate being a woman today!

The writing on the wall...perhaps?

Something rather disconcerting is happening here on the blog...
while several thousand readers pop by daily to read The Humble Bungalow posts,
the number of followers on Google Friend have recently decreased...
not by too many but enough that I noticed...and am curious.
So the question in my mind is WHY?

Here are a few of my thoughts...
~ The Hostess has been here for too long and has overstayed her welcome ~
~ the writing is dull ~
~ there is nothing of value for readers ~
~ your lives are busy ~
~ Paris dreams and travel was an exciting time and now a distant memory ~
~ since retiring my life has become fairly routine, it is quiet, simple and I am content ~
~ I have very little to share that you find of interest ~

So I am going to take a break...
I will be posting on Instagram if you care to pop over there...click on the pretty hydrangeas on the side bar and the link will take you to my page.

Yesterday was a whirlwind of activity
packed a lot into a weekday morning and afternoon.
Full to the brim with new things and above all ~ it was FUN!

I did something that I have never done before...
I had a professional make up application.

This is the "after" picture
at the Spa where I had a "makeover."

I am wearing more make up than I usually do.
The gal at the Spa used various Jane Iredale products...
primer was new to me and she used just a little and it covered my entire face.
Apparently it creates a base for all the other products.

Powder, eye shadow, blush, mascara, lipstick followed...

The results were quite startling,
it was me under all those products...
my complexion looked even
my eyes stood out more
my brows looked fuller
it does feel like a lot of fuss and bother.
I like to keep things quick and easy
~ Simple ~

I purchased two products that I was ready to replace...
powdered foundation and eye shadow.
The powder is in Satin and the eye shadow is called Supernova.
Lovely containers and all Jane's products are mineral based and safe.

Earlier in the day I went to the Tillicum Winners Store.
You can see my skin naked "before make up" here while I was shopping.
I do look a bit anemic without make up!

I bought a coral knit layering piece
not quite a jacket or a cardigan
something in between.
(very reasonably priced)

and this top
I have been craving colour.
(another bargain)

A light cross body bag was suggested by my doctor
who recently diagnosed me with "supraspinatus tendonitis"
a very painful condition that has reduced the mobility of my arm and shoulder.

I need to go to physiotherapy, do specific exercises, generally try to rest the arm and shoulder
and if that fails to bring relief he will order a cortisone shot.

He has advised me to stop carrying heavy things...
like purses and grocery bags.

I needed new boots and these were on sale.
Clarks, comfy and somewhat stylish...
will wear them with jeans, pants, skirts and tights.
I wear boots almost every day and the Clarks that I bought last year are showing signs of wear on the soles, so before they fall apart I pounced on a new pair.

I did not overspend
everything I purchased was reasonably priced
and having been very frugal lately I felt no guilt whatsoever.

This pretty pink rose bloom caught my eye on my walk...
this bud will open in the warm sunshine someday soon.

Heralding that Spring must be just around the corner.
Bring on the sunshine and roses!

As always I welcome your thoughts and comments.

Wednesday ~ Pictures and a few Words

5am ~ the mournful droning of a freighter's fog horn in the nearby Strait wakes me.
I toss and turn
the cat stirs
licks my face...

I am wide awake!

5:30 ~ Sleep eludes me so I tip toe out of our bedroom
close the door
go into the kitchen and make an espresso.

the jolt of caffeine is welcome

Am I too groggy to compose a post this early?

Oh but then I remember it is Wordless Wednesday
maybe all I need to do is find a few images
post them pronto.

the sparkly Christmas bauble
left lying in a tangle of twiggy branches
forgotten

the pretty fuchsia blooms
clinging on for dear life
in the winter chills of January on The Avenue

the novel that has threatened to shut down the domestic team of one
in The Humble Bungalow

L'Occitane Shea Butter
Hostess endorsed "star" performer
keeping my skin supple

(here's the silver star ~ my good housekeeping icon of approval)

Aveda helps keep my curls clean and soft...

I had my hair cut last Saturday.
It was driving me crazy.
Too long and limp and the weight pulled the hair down
so a few layers were added to allow the curls to spring back to life!

My hairdresser gave me some samples of Bumble and Bumble
their newest products for curly hair.

I am excited about the new Primer...
it helps define the curl and refreshes curls without having to shampoo the next day.
(My hairdresser recommends shampooing every other day.)

On the same topic

~ Advice from the experts ~
I booked an appointment for a Jane Iredale natural make up session at the Spa.
I am keen to see what products and colours they recommend for my skin tone.
Since I opt for the no make up look, it will be interesting to see the results.

Coffee consumed
cats fed
still dark outside

~ 7:00am ~

Good Morning from The Hostess of The Humble Bungalow!
