Growing in a greenhouse...

Mr. HB
enjoys pottering about in the greenhouse.
He loves to grow tomatoes
cucumbers and radishes.

He tends the plants daily...

Halls English Greenhouse
shade cloth is installed to protect the plants from the strong rays of the sun.

Tomatoes
beefsteak and cherry varieties.

Cucumbers growing in a pot.

Fresh tomatoes are SO MUCH tastier than those found in the shops.

We have been eating them in salads, in sandwiches,
I am roasting some in the oven as I type...

I rinsed the tomatoes before slicing
popped in a few cloves of garlic
seasoned with salt and pepper
and drizzled with olive oil.
Roast slow at 275 degrees for several hours.
Pop into a container and freeze for future use
in soups, stews and pasta sauces.

The house smells divine...

Thank you Mr. HB for your bountiful crop of tomatoes
and I look forward to the next harvest!

Do you grow any food crops?
What are your favourite things to grow?
Do you can or preserve or make jam?

Yum - i make a tomato saucce with roasted tomatoes (2 lbs) , about 20 cloves of garlic, drizzled with 1/4 cup olive oil and sprinkled with 1/4 tsp of red pepper flakes and dusted with fresh ground pepper. Roast about 25 until tomaotes and garlic are soft - serve with pasta topped with fresh basil and grated parnesan - think the recipe oringinally came from Martha - it's easy and delicious.

Beautiful fresh harvest! I agree entirely fresh veggies grown at home are the best. So tasty. I am growing one tomato plant on my deck and am harvesting now as well. Sadly my other attempts growing veggies were eaten by deer over night. The good news is: Bambie has not (yet) learned how climb stairs to reach my deck tomato plant. Susan

I always raise tomatoes. Nothing better than a fresh tomato, warmed by the sun. When I was young we always preserved (froze, canned) everything. My father had a huge garden. I just have my tomatoes in pots, but that works fine for me. My mother is on a low salt diet so last year, she, my sister-in-law and I turned 2 bushels of tomatoes into wonderful tomato juice. Enjoy your bounty.

Those tomato plants are an inspiration - so yummy. We are trying patio tomatoes this year in a pot on our sunny deck. Almost too hot/sunny so I am not sure if they will work out... A few have had brown bottoms and the rest are still green. We might have been better with cherry tomatoes (which is what I thought we were growing!)
Thanks for sharing.

We only have 3 tomato plants this summer in our raised bed; however, all six fruit trees produced, as did our strawberries. I've made strawberry, plum and peach jam. Still making the last two with strawberries in the freezer to make more in the winter. Love the smell of fruits and veggies as they're being cooked!!!

Mr. HB's tomatoes look great! My husband always had a big farm garden-corn, potatoes, squash, etc. Now that the kids have left the nest & we have to be more aware of health issues, he grows celery, Brussels sprouts, onions, eggplant, peppers (3colors) & kale in addition to the traditional farmer's garden. No more corn-diabetes, but he's now into purple string beans & 3 colors of potatoes(though fewer hills than we had with kids.) Recently he reintroduced strawberries into the berry "mix" - tons of blueberries, but the blackberries died after a February thaw. Last but not least, 2 pots of cherry tomatoes & 1 pot of plum on the deck with 1 potted eggplant (ran out of room in he garden.) I've harvested 2 from the pot & 2 from the garden. Oh, forgot about the 3 kinds of lettuce in the spring-my favorite is trout Romaine. Great flavor and pretty leaves. He says we will have loads of winter squash this year-my favorite. As a kid who grew up near the city & veggies came from a frozen box or wrapped in cellophane, having a gardening husband has been a wonderful "perk." Carol in Vt

You and your husband certainly have immense green thumbs - your flowers & vegetable garden are both wonderful. I do not grow anything - I tell people that I only buy cut flowers so that I don't have to feel guilty when they die! My grandfather and dad were both amazing gardeners but I did not inherit that particular talent.
PS - Roasting some tomatoes is definitely on the agenda!

What a lovely little spot to putter about, as we American would say. And I totally agree with you about homegrown tomatoes, and roasting them is the best!

Sounds wonderful! My husband loves pasta!

The deer do love to raid our gardens here too...fortunately our greenhouse is in a fenced back yard so we keep the gate closed to deter them from munching our veggies...I have seen deer climbing stairs!

Our tomatoes grow in large pots too...the home made tomato juice must be delicious!
There is nothing that tastes as fresh as fresh food picked from the garden...
Enjoy your harvest.

I rarely go into the greenhouse but it is much warmer inside on a rainy day...my friend has a wicker chair in the greenhouse and I am sure there will be many opportunities to sip a mug of hot tea and relax among the plants!

Before we had the greenhouse we grew tomatoes on our patio too...we used to fry green tomatoes and serve them with eggs for breakfast.
You may still be able to find cherry tomato plants at the garden centres if you want more.

Jam making is rewarding...I have not made any for years but I do make marmalade.
I love having homemade jam as it tastes so much better than store bought...it is fruitier and less sweet.

Carol your garden sounds divine! Such an array of produce and I bet it looks beautiful too! Thank you for sharing it with us.

We enjoy our garden...fresh flowers add so much to home decor...I don't feel guilty when they fade and die...I pop them in the compost and just pick more!

Pottering or puttering in the garden is what I like to do best...its relaxing especially on a sunny day.
I think roasting any vegetable brings out the rich flavour...I like to do a sheet pan with all kinds of veggies and drizzle them with balsamic vinegar as a side dish.

As well as the flavours, there’s something about the smell of homegrown tomatoes that evokes such happy childhood memories for me ... Mr HBs hobby is indeed a fruitful one :)
