Royalty amongst other things...

The young royal family Kate, William, George and Charlotte are here in Victoria for the week and they are staying at Government House.
Government House is on Rockland Avenue just a few blocks north of The Humble Bungalow.
Government House has a tea room where Mother and I go to in the summertime and where we sit on the patio to have lunch and share a pot of tea.
I love to walk through the rose gardens and smell the beautiful roses...
the gardens are tended by an army of volunteers and it looks splendid.

The gates are closed for security this week while the Royals are in residence...
our SIL is busy working on the tour providing audio tech support.

I did not take the following picture but wanted to share it with you...
it is a wee bit fuzzy and I think it must have been taken with a zoom lens.

Kate looked radiant in her Royal Blue dress and exquisite hat.
She wore sapphire (I have been advised that they are actually tanzanite) and diamond earrings with her lovely sapphire engagement ring.
On her dress she pinned a diamond studded Maple Leaf borrowed
from HRH Queen Elizabeth.
It was a gift from Canada to honour Queen Elizabeth (another error on my part, they were given to the Queen Mother) on one of her visits to Canada.

I apologize for these errors as I took the information from the local news reporter who obviously had not done her homework...
we have amended the info thanks to reader and royal watcher Patricia!

Helicopters are in the sky in our neighbourhood
hovering above the motorcade.
Security is serious business and there are strict protocols in place.

One of our orchids is flowering and the rest are dormant...

We have settled into a slower pace
as Fall nudges its way into The Humble Bungalow...
the garden will be put to bed in the next few weeks and then I plan to pull out my knitting.

I made a lettuce soup.
Have you ever heard of lettuce soup?
I had a tub of lettuce that was almost wilted and knew that we would never eat it all by its best before date so I looked online and found a recipe.

So quick and easy and really low in Weight Watcher points!

Cook a diced onion in a wee bit of oil until soft.
Add 6 cups of veggie stock and 1 cup of diced potato
simmer for about 20 minutes until potato is cooked.
Add 6-8 cups of mixed salad greens and cook a few more minutes.
Season with salt, pepper, and 1 or 2 tbsps. of a good curry powder (to taste)

Use the immersion blender and process until no lumps remain.
Serve hot topped with a dollop of yogurt if you desire.

I wore my collection of bangles out to lunch last week.
Darling daughter, Savvy son and Mr. HB met for a family lunch.
Talk about one for the memory books...we cannot remember the last time we went out just the four of us!

Mr. HB and I enjoyed a recent date night.
We went out for dinner and a movie...
we saw the new Bridget Jones film and I laughed out loud so much that I had tears rolling down my face.
It is a light comedy and a "feel good" film.

Darling daughter and I went to Aritzia and perused their new stock.
I love their lines of clothing as they are very classic, simple and are suitable for the young and the old.

I purchased a simple off white Wilfred top that is very soft and cozy.
It has a low V neck which is perfect for featuring pearls or a scarf.
I will layer this when the weather gets cooler under my black leather vest or a sweater or jacket.

Darling daughter purchased a fabulous pair of jeans by Citizens of Humanity.
She referred to them as"mom jeans" and we laughed because I was wearing my NYDJ.
(Not Your Daughters' Jeans)
Coincidentally we both had our leather "moto" jackets on with our jeans and tops.
This is the second time in a few weeks where I have found myself dressed in the same style outfit as my companion when out and about!

Today and I have a few chores on my list which will keep me busy
and I am trying to decide what to cook for dinner tonight.
When the weather gets cooler I like to make a cozy meal of roasted veggies and possibly cook a roast of beef.

I need to go for my walk and I may just pop into the grocery store on my way home and see what inspires me...
Keep cozy people.

Thank you for stopping by The Humble Bungalow.

Gosh, this post is crammed full of goodies, Leslie!
Your area must be buzzing with the royal visit.
Yes, I like lettuce soup for that very reason, using up the salad drawer. I use spring onions. It's yummy, eh?
I love that top, it looks like something you'll be able to wear with so much and to so many places.
And lastly, I missed the new Bridget Jones film as it started the day before I was leaving for hols, so I've preordered it for January, oh how can I wait that long?!!! It sounds hilarious.
You've certainly had a hectic few days!

Lovely post Leslie! The soup recipes looks delicious and easy. By the way, the Duchess' earrings are tanzanite, not sapphire, and the Maple Leaf brooch was given to the the Queen Mother on a state visit to Canada in 1939. I read a lot of royal blogs! :0)

Greetings Helena! Nice to hear from you!

Oh so did I...loved the details like the bow at the back of the dress and her hat was absolutely stunning! ( as is she)

It is tasty and a great way to get our greens!

The city is a buzz with excitement! We are so thrilled that they are here and I am glued to the local news to see more of their trip as they have been flying off our island before coming back each night to be with the children.
You'll enjoy the film...have a fun holiday.
I saw all those pictures you posted on your blog all in one post and was most impressed.

I like the sentiment too...rather like modern day pen pals.

The Duchess is lovely in her royal blue dress. Great color...a must have color! Lunching with family sounds is always nice. Your soup looks delicious. So nice on a Fall day. Fall inspires soups and meat and potato hot meals. It is finally much cooler. Morning dew abounds. At last our season is changing. Like you, I am loving Fall and everything that comes with it. Susan

Yes they brought the nanny! And an entourage...lots of security people and I am sure there are many more behind the scenes...
The women in our family get together weekly...we are a close knit group.
Will try to keep posting frequently as I do enjoy the writing process...and taking the photos are fun too.

Oh thank you Patricia, I stand corrected....will amend my post. I thought the news reporter said sapphire earrings and she definitely erred on the brooch as I distinctly heard that Kate had borrowed it from The Queen.
I read very few royal blogs...perhaps you can recommend a few?

It is such fun to go to a film where we do not need to hide our eyes from the violence...and instead can laugh deeply and feel like we have been thoroughly entertained.

It was a warm and mild day here but up in Bella Bella where the royal couple flew today it was very inclement weather...torrential rains and gusting winds...they could not do all that had been planned due to the weather...

I watched the Royal welcome on television - the Duchess was beautiful in her blue dress. Did you notice that her hat had felt/wool leaves that looked like maple leaves, too?

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I did notice the details...and loved the hat! She is radiant in her royal blue dress.

I was thinking of you when I was reading about the Royal Tour, Leslie! The fashion has been 11/10 so far. Thought Kate's maple leaf brooch was the perfect touch.

I must try your lettuce soup recipe.

So much excitement in British Columbia! We were fortunate to see an extensive display of the Queen's wardrobe at Buckingham Palace. There was a section dedicated to Royal Tour items. The Queen, like the Duchess of Cambridge, always chose designs that reflected the symbols of the country she visited. It is amazing to see the precision of tailoring and the subtle changes that reflect the passage of time. The precision of the millinery, as Lorrie remarked, was astonishing. The Queen even had a hat with maple leaves with silk stems.
I am going to make the lettuce soup. Perhaps my daughter and I will go to see Bridget Jones.

Hi Leslie, you are right, she did borrow it from the Queen; the Queen inherited it from her mother.

Oh, there are lots to choose from! For talking about the Duchess, I like : http://fromberkshiretobuckingham.blogspot.ca/

And for other royal families, including fashion and events:

http://orderofsplendor.blogspot.ca/

I think both these blogs have spin-off blogs focusing on fashion or jewels. Enjoy!

Thank you will add those to my watch list!

The fashion is fabulous...she looked amazing last evening in her red gown...

The Duchess' blue hat reminds me very much of a similarly styled jaunty red hat she wore the first time she visited Canada. Also with maple leaves.
I googled Duchess of Cambridge red hat Canada and the image popped up. I couldn't manage to figure out how to paste in a photo to save you the trouble.

The fashion savvy designers are so creative and can send a subtle message...important little details like those maple leaves were not lost on us!
She looked fabulous in her red dress last evening at the gala banquet last evening at Government House.

Kate is really back in fine form after bringing Charlotte into the world. I'll bet she'd enjoy your lettuce soup to keep so slim & trim.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

She is certainly has a fabulous figure...I am sure that she has had to work hard to get back to the pre-baby shape. She radiates a healthy natural glow that is so beautiful and she is the epitome of grace. Can you tell that I am a fan?

It must have been a real treat to see the royals! Many years ago Prince Charles and Lady Diana came to Prince George. We were living up north at the time, and happened to be in the city when they were there. Prince Charles walked over when they were doing their walkabout and my hand was one of the ones he grabbed/shook.

I've never heard of lettuce soup, but will have to keep it mind for next time I have lettuce that's looking a little sad.

How fun to have William and Catherine and kids in your part of the world! I see other people have already pointed out that the Maple Leaf brooch was a gift to the Queen Mother, when she was a Queen herself, from her husband, George VI, in 1939. It was made by Asprey. The Queen has also loaned this brooch to Camilla on several occasions. I love that it gets around!

What a fabulous memory from the royal tour in Prince George!

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Prince George was seen riding his bicycle in Beacon Hill Park this morning! The secret service were out in full force...just wished I could have been there!
Thank you for the info on the brooch!

I have also thrown a bunch of arugula into pasta with tomato sauce just before serving...waste not want not!
