Holidaze at Quarterdeck Cottage

The lazy daze of summer...

Simple meals
family
pooltime
Sun

Gazing at the Bees collecting pollen from the flowers
can hold the attention of a sweet girl.

Sunshine
 a bright bold yellow flower.

Buzzing Busy Bees...
bees on almost every bloom.

We had the grandchildren here for a week and it has flown by so fast.
They left on the ferry on Friday...
I will miss their happy laughter and energy.

Simple daisies
blooming at the side of the road.

Love these humble beauties...
there is something so classic about these blooms.
I like to pick a few and pop them in a jam jar.

Behold the beauty of this gorgeous Dahlia!

Mom grew dahlias when we lived in Oak Bay.
Her garden was quite lovely and she spent many hours every week tending to the perennial beds.

She had a dedicated section for her beloved Dahlias.
Some of the flowers were as big a dinner plates.

When dahlia season was at its' peak
mom would pack a variety of dahlias to bring inside the house.
There would be vases in almost every room.

Oh those were the days...

We've got my sister and her husband coming to the cottage today for a visit so I will close for now.

Hope that your summer is ticking along nicely.
Stay safe.

Your dahlias are gorgeous! They were always my favourite flowers at the Saanich Fair exhibits. The colours and the symmetry are incredible. I'm glad you had some family visit! It feels good to be closer to normal now, doesn't it? I assume you and Mr. HB have both had your 2nd jabs - I get mine on Tuesday, woo hoo!

Your pics of the dahlias reminded me of my mom who grew dahlias of various beautiful colours, and I would often take a big one to school to gift it to my teacher.

Lovely summery photos. Flowers and grandchildren who have time to study bees make for the essence of summer. Enjoy your company!

Your flower garden is beautiful. I've never had very good luck with Dahlias. Yours are gorgeous. My Mom used to grow them when I was young. She grew a large variety of them, an like another reader wrote, my Mom would send me with a big bouquet to my teacher, and also my elementary school principal. Sometimes she would take them to the teacher and principal herself. I always liked my teachers, and especially liked the principal, who always asked how my Dad was doing. He attended the same school I did and she was the principal for both of us. She was the principal from the 1930's until about 1968.

So wonderful to have your grandchildren with you there, for you and for them. They will always remember their days at the cottage.

Lovely dahlias! My dad used to have beautiful beds of them. They weren't planted in the regular flower beds. You must have enjoyed the time with the grandchildren!

Dahlias are such frilly frothy flowers...you need not buy a huge bunch to make a bouquet. The current weather is much more tolerable...we HAVE both had our second shots but I will still wear my mask in shops. Congratulations on your second shot!

Your teacher must have appreciated those lovely bouquets. Small random acts of kindness are the best gifts!

We are back home now and working in the garden catching up on the weeding and deadheading. We've enjoyed being able to sit on the front porch and the back deck since we have been home. I like to look at the garden after we work in it and appreciate our efforts,

Hope you are enjoying the cooler weather and I can see you relaxing on your patio in the garden.

I am glad to hear from you Kristien...hope all is well with you and your family. Have you had both your vaccinations?

Aren't dahlias a wonderful flower? I have some in the garden beds and some in pots...variety is the spice of life!

Try growing them in large pots and take them in during the winter...pop then=m in a shed, greenhouse or a cool garage. Your school memories sound delightful. I remember fondly, my primary and elementary teachers and classmates...actually a few of my long time friends are those I met years ago.
Take care and I hope you are staying safe during this pandemic.

The grandchildren are such fun! We feel very fortunate to spend some of the holidays together. They are currently up island with their mom and their other grandma at a seaside home on the beach.
We all try to make their holidays exciting and fun.

I think they will remember the days at the cottage...I remember spending precious time with my grandmother...and when my grandfather was alive he treated me to chocolate bars and ice cream cones and I rode in his large and very vintage (from the 1930's and 40's) classic cars!

I recently read that yellow attracts bees and wasps...I bought a bright yellow linen dress and am now wondering if I will get stung when I wear it? Navy and yellow do seem to be a pleasant colour combination.

Sounds like your father had a passion for dahlias and a green thumb! We really did have fun with the grands...it was quiet the week after they left but we were very social with other people at the cottages and invited my sister and her husband to pop over for a day! Your visit to Victoria looked like fun, sorry our dates were not in sync for a meet up.

Have you read any of The Darling Dahlias book series? I really quite enjoy them. But they should be read in order.
