Weekend wrapped up... back in the Humble Bungalow.

After a particularly hectic week Mr. HB and I stole away on our boat and tied up at the dock at Otter Bay Marina on Pender Island.
We were in dire need of some "down time" and find that boating is the perfect remedy for what ails us...
Otter Bay is well maintained and features two pools, cottage rentals, a small store and a cafe. You can rent, kayaks, paddle boards, and scooters...if you want to do more than just relax!

Canada Day was spent relaxing, reading, swimming and knitting.
Later in the day the Pender Island Pipe and Drum Band marched down the dock, bagpipers in kilts and full regalia.
Despite the heat they put on quite the show.
You can watch a video of a portion of the performance on my Instagram page.

The rocky shoreline had some interesting details...

Pretty flowers in planters along the docks brightened up the Marina.

Drought tolerant plants were chosen as the Gulf Islands have a limited water supply...we all need to be mindful of our water usage as there are drought conditions all over the province of BC and in many of the US states.

Both Mr. HB and I sleep better on our boat.
It could be the fresh air
or that our bunk is super cozy
and
there is that gentle rocking motion of the boat as it bobs upon the ocean
which swiftly lulls us into dreamland...

The laundry is on...thankfully the LG machines are doing all the dirty work which frees me up to type a blog post while dinner is simmering on the stove.

Tomato Sauce for Spaghetti

Fresh basil from the greenhouse...garlic clove chopped.

Simmering and it smells so wonderful.

 ~ Tomato Sauce ~

Heat 2 tbsp. olive oil
add
2 1/2 pounds chopped tomatoes
1 diced onion
cook until softened.

Add in rest of ingredients:

small can of tomato paste
(fill the can with water and pour in)

1/2 tsp. dried red pepper flakes
1/2 tsp. sugar
2 tbsp. minced fresh basil
1/2 small carrot grated
1/2 tsp. dried thyme
1/2 tsp. dried oregano
1 clove garlic chopped fine
salt and pepper to taste

Simmer for 45 minutes.
Boil pasta and cook until al dente and serve with a salad.

Time for me to fold some laundry so I must sign off...

Hope you had a great weekend.
Thank you for stopping by The Humble Bungalow Blog!

So nice that you got away. And returned to the joys of homemade pasta sauce with help from your greenhouse:).

Fresh sea air on a bobbing boat, perfect recipe for sleep.

Also your pasta sauce recipe is what I've been looking for. In my teen years, the restaurant owners used to make something like this for themselves. I never could get it right.

What a lovely weekend! Those flowers are just amazing. A friend just arrived back from her first trip to Victoria and she was duly impressed - especially with her day to Buschart(?) Gardens - the variety of flowers and the whole layout was so beautiful. I was there many years ago and you are so lucky to be able to grow such a variety of plants out there on the coast. Have a wonderful week.

The green house is turning out to be a great investment...we ate our first cucumber this weekend and the sweet taste was way beyond those store bought cukes!

Butchart Gardens are world famous! The garden is very formal and has acres of plantings and themed areas of the gardens...we ARE very fortunate that our growing zone and climate is so favourable for flowers and plants!
Enjoy your week Margie!

Dani when we step foot on the boat it is like we are transformed...
does it feel like that in Ontario cottage country?
If the farmers markets or your garden has a bumper crop of tomatoes this recipe is a good one to make....and it can be frozen for winter usage too!

Sharing is half the fun!

It freezes well too Madame...in case you feel ambitious and want to put some by for the fall and winter.
How is your course at UBC ?

I imagine you are very busy with your house guests!
Hope that everyone is having a splendid time...
Sleeping onboard the boat with the water ebbing and flowing...there is nothing quite like it...perhaps a boat is in your future?

Thank you for popping by Mabon Moon...
hope you are having a great summer.

Marilyn,
We are very fortunate to have the boat...it is not inexpensive to own and operate but it is much less money than flying somewhere exotic and staying in a high end hotel...it is more like camping but on the ocean!

Thank you Jennifer...I have been reading your blog about your adventures in Oregon and the brake issue must have been a real nail biter...I admire you, as learning to drive with a trailer in tow must be quite a challenge...you go girl!

It was how I remembered it. My husband and I loved the sauce. Canned tomatoes were substituted. In the middle of summer I'll use fresh. This will become become a staple. Thank you.
