Wardrobe Basics ~ A symphony in Black and White, a recipe and our Star Magnolia

Our Star Magnolia
is
blooming out front of The Humble Bungalow.

I love the elegant waxy white flowers.
They emerge from fuzzy cocoons...
if you look closely you can see one as it is about to pop.

The tree was planted many years ago and has grown quite slowly.
It is in the middle of a bed and makes a bold statement.

My linen skirt has an asymmetrical detail that makes it more interesting...
I like a flounce and it sways as I walk.

I can dress it up or wear it simply
with a casual white top and my distressed denim jacket.
I actually wear it with my white "trainers" or tennis shoes and lacy white socks.

The length is longer on me so I don't feel I NEED to wear capri tights.
My legs are not at their best...they have scars and marks which I try to hide.
One cannot live to 69 and still have pristine unblemished skin.

This white blouse is a favourite of mine.
I love the texture and the fabric is pure white.
The shape is forgiving especially for my mid section
which is where I now carry most of my weight.

Nice detail on the cuffs.

I wear this with black Eileen Fisher pants, and often with casual denim jeans.

The Big Baroque Pearls add an interesting touch.
I feel so much more "dressed up" with pearls.

Black and white wardrobe basics are so easy...
I can get dressed for almost any occasion and have a lot of mix and match options.

Recently I found a lovely Saint James black sweater which has a good structure.
I purchased it second hand for a fraction of the original price.
It is almost like a sweater jacket...
Saint James make lovely clothing...I visited one of their stores in Aix en Provence.

I have my sourdough boule baking in the oven as I write this blogpost.
The kitchen smells wonderful...

I just finished making Hamburger Soup.
It is a recipe that I have been making for many decades...
I used to make a big batch and freeze it in containers for my lunches when I worked in the schools.

We had a bowl for our lunch today with a couple of small pieces of sourdough toast.

I try to make soups once a week...
the soups is quick to heat up and works well on my aqua fit days.
I arrive home hungry and my husband has soup and toast ready when I get home.

Do you like to make soup?

Have you tried making sourdough bread?
I got my starter from a good friend and I have given batches of it to many people...
she has shared hers with many others as well!

We both use the recipes on Alexandra Bakes.

I have recently discovered Farmhouse on Boone and am enjoying Lisa Bass's site.
She lives on a large farm and has 8 children!

I wear a vintage rhinestone brooch on my wool beret and other hats.

Wearing vintage pins are a bit of a habit of mine.
I don't seem to find many but I always look!!

Do you enjoy thrifting?

Thank you for popping by The Humble Bungalow Blog.
I appreciate your comments and invite you to share your thoughts.

Take care and until next time...

Hello Leslie, love your skirt. I am thinking about buying a navy asymmetrical linen skirt from Brora.
I also make soups. I always use organic vegetables, nearly always a head of celery and as many vegetables as I can. This lasts me for a week as my husband is not keen on vegetable soup. I buy Keto bread which is made with lots of seeds and is gluten free.

I like your skirt! Simple, but with a little extra! Your soup sounds very good. I do like to make soup and it's so nice to have in the freezer. Your magnolia is magnificent. What a beautiful flower it has. Years and years ago I had a sourdough started going, but at some point I gave it up as I felt ruled by it! Haha! I like to make all different kinds of recipes, not just sourdough, but you need to keep using the sourdough starter or dumping some every week. I finally decided it just wasn't for me. Your bread always looks delicious and sometimes I think I should try again.

I make soup frequently and i also pressure can soups so they are shelf stable. I also have been baking sour dough for years and use a basic no knead recipe from King Arthurs website. I used to watch lisa on Farmhouse on Boone when she actually lived on Boone street. I liked her then but cant stand her now. She bcame a 'influencer' and product of her own making. And although, I'm sure many would disagree with me, having that many kids is just over populating. Plus, she has a religious bent which I abhor.
Just my two cents, though.
We're enjoying being in Napa valley right now and the weather is glorious. We have an RV so the cost is minimal.

Hi Leslie! Soup and bread are a favorite here too. Not sure why I don't make it more often. I did a crockpot lentil soup that we had with sourdough for two days this weekend. It's the easiest and most delicious soup recipe. I toasted my bread and on day 2 my husband did too. I haven't attempted to make it myself, but your photos of crusty golden brown loaves are inspiring.
I have a drawer full of pins, vintage and new. I don't wear them much lately, but they make me happy to see, little works of art.
Take care

Susan Lee ~ Your soup sounds delicious and healthy! I like the simplicity of making it and heating it up daily is fast!

Jeannine ~ The sourdough starter can be stored in the fridge and lasts a long time...I know if you keep it on the counter it requires daily tending...and I can see how one might get tired of the maintenance...If I can do it anyone can :-))

Kelly ~ Hope you had a great Saint Patrick's Day...sun shone here and it was really warm!

Tahoe Girl ~ Oh Napa sounds lovely...living there must be wonderful. I am new to Farmhouse on Boone. I have not explored much other than her sourdough recipes which are great...I can easily sift through stuff without getting too involved.

Brenda N ~ Oh I would love to see a photo of your vintage pins and brooches...Artistic creations are a feast for the eye.
Sourdough bread is very rewarding for me...I enjoy the entire process and we love the bread. Soup making has been a habit in my repertoire for many years...I like using up leftovers and soups are great for using up these small bits in the fridge. Besides getting all our daily servings of veggies can be a challenge so veggie based soups are great!

Love your black and white fashion items...and really like the pearls. So different. I make a similar hamburger soup - but now make it with soy crumbles ( Morningstar brand...they are frozen so always ready and they look like ground beef) since we gave up beef four years ago when my honey had a heart attack. Once they cook all day - mine is a crock pot recipe - you never know you are not eating beef. Have not made bread...it's on my list. Hope you are enjoying your birthday month!

The Best of Bridge hamburger soup is a classic. It is in regular rotation at our house too. Love making soup.

I have seen quite a few Sherman rhinestone brooches lately on an on-line auction site in my area ... perhaps you could try one that has auctions in your area. The site that hosts auctions in my area is called Maxsold. I am in Toronto so I google Maxsold Toronto and find the website with local auctions.

Ann ~ We sometimes go out for sushi at lunch and I have a tofu dish that is really yummy...I usually order it with a "Gomai" Spinach salad. We don't generally eat a lot of red meat, I cook more chicken and fish and have a few good meatless meals in my repertoire.
A heart attack would be a definite incentive to refine the menu planning...hope your Husband is doing better.

Paula ~ I use quite a few of the recipes in the Best Of Bridge series of cookbooks. They are "tried and true" never had a failure :-))

Anonymous ~ I have several Sherman rhinestone brooches that I purchased locally...I always look at the thrift and consignment shops here in town for interesting pins...I don't NEED any I just like to look and if a special one crossed my path I would definitely buy it!
Happy Shopping!!

Gotta love a swooshy skirt! I have been enjoying the local blooms - there's a big magnolia near Central Middle School that's starting to burst into flower. I think you know I love thrifting! <3 Keep your eyes out for the next "Tweed" magazine, Lesley!

Thank you for mentioning Lisa's blog. I had not heard of it. I find it and her lovely family refreshing in today's antiseptic world. God bless.

Your black and white wardrobe is so versatile and well thought out. I love the feeling of a swishy skirt, too.
How fun to see the Best of Bridge soup recipe. It's a regular one around here, too. Filling and easy to make.

Sheila ~ The magnolia trees blooming around town are so amazing! I wish the blooms lasted longer though...happy thrifting! Enjoy this sunny weather!

Lorrie ~ A Black and white wardrobe does work for me!
I found a great pair of black pants at Marshalls to replace my very worn out Yoga pants...they are by Michael Kors and the retail tag said $165.00 but I paid under $50...they have a smarter look and texture and some brass buttons on the top...they are super comfy and I have been wearing them most days since I found them! Enjoy your week!
