October ~ Feel the Fullness of Fall

Last weekend we went to The BC Aviation Museum out by the Victoria Airport.
It was a lot bigger and way more interesting than I initially thought
it would be...

Indoor activities are very much a Fall Favourite.
Keeping warm and dry while visiting museums and galleries.

We went with friends and had a guided tour by a volunteer which was almost 2 hours.

They have a designated area for children with games, flight simulators and small airplanes to ride inside...
there were lots of kids enjoying the space.

Afterwards we went to The Spitfire Grill near the plane refuelling station for lunch.
We were able to watch many planes land.

I ordered a bowl of the hearty mushroom soup as I wanted to warm up.

Soup making is back on the agenda here in The Humble Bungalow.
A big pot is made early in the week
so we can enjoy soup on the days that I attend Aqua Fit classes.
It warms me up after the drive home.

BOO!
My sister and I had a walk last week in Oak Bay.
We spied many yards decorated in the Halloween theme.

I had NO IDEA how expensive these skeletons cost!!
My guess was about $100 and my sister looked on Amazon only to tell me that I needed to multiply my guess by 10 times!!
WOW

There is a Hallmark Christmas movie being filmed here in Victoria.
We thought we might see them at work on the Esplanade near the Tea Room.
They must have wrapped up that segment of the film as they have now moved on into the heart of Fernwood.

We have minimal seasonal Fall decorations...
for Halloween night, a small string of orange pumpkin lights.

~ Fall Porch Decor ~
I added these 2 wee white pumpkins and a white cyclamen.
The big cones are foraged from the nearby trees at the cemetery.
The dried alliums are from the garden and that grape vine wreath is decades old.

I just finished this book by Phaedra Patrick.
I enjoyed the quirky story and the characters felt very real.
About a year ago I read her other book and really like it too.

~ Pink Fall colour on the Limelight Hydrangeas ~
I am drying more hydrangeas to bring inside our Humble Bungalow.
This week I gave some away to a friend and realized that I needed some for us.
Hope they dry fast before the winds get crazy as they tend to fly around the garden.

A scarf knit on the bias is taking shape...
using a sumptuous yarn.
Japanese Noro which is a blend of silk, mohair and lambswool.
I found the wool at our local shop The Beehive.

Yesterday I went to Murchies and stocked up on their Princess Blend rose tea.
My tea caddy was almost empty...
I like to brew a pot and sip this tea while I am reading or knitting
perfect for a cool Fall afternoon.

My current book stack...
all were found in the local little free library kiosks.

We are cocooning in front of the TV more this Fall...
Really enjoying the British crime dramas found on Acorn TV.
The Chelsea Detective, Cuffs, Whitstable Pearl, Cannes Confidential
and many more.

This arrangement was hand delivered by the neighbours...
a few minutes ago.
In appreciation for our gifts of harvested fresh grown veggies and apples!
Such a thoughtful gift...

Fall
~ Dinner tonight ~

I am making a "stringy" shredded beef roast in the oven...
4 pound chuck roast seasoned with salt and pepper
baked in a covered casserole for 4 hours.
You take it out and using two forks you then shred the meat.

I am roasting potatoes, carrots, zucchini and beets in a drizzle of olive oil
sprinkled with salt and pepper to accompany the roast.

I hope it is a tasty meal because this is a super easy dinner!

Hope you are enjoying October.
It is almost Halloween :-))
and
I have a BIG bag full of treats.

Well I am about to put the kettle on and will brew a pot of tea...
now do I knit or start a new book?

Is it Fall where you live?
What are you up to this week?

I made a chuck roast for dinner today as well! First, I seasoned the roast with onion powder, thyme, kosher salt, and pepper. Next, I browned it well in a cast iron skillet with a little olive oil before adding it to the crockpot which already contained cut up carrots. Topped it off with a cup of beef broth that also contained a scoop of Better Than Bouillon. The last hour or so of cooking I added a bag of frozen pearl onions and a mix of cornstarch and water to thicken the gravy. We also had mashed potatoes and corn to round out the meal. Delicious! It was a beautiful day, cool but sunny and not very windy. I sat outside reading to soak up a little sunshine.

Hi Leslie,
Spring has arrived in our corner of NZ. Your Blog and Instagram pictures are a joy to look at/read and I appreciate the work you do to post often. The museum certainly looked interesting, my husband is a bit of a plane fanatic. Halloween is not really celebrated here, but we do have some families with young children near us, who may visit for a treat. Warm Wishes, Colleen

Two more english series that you might like : Murder in Provence, and The Good Ship Murder. The second is set on a ship cruising the mediterranean so there is lots of beautiful scenery.

No, not Fall over here in Queensland! It was well above 30deg C here today, and Summer has started to bite. I love to see your white pumpkins, and Fall decor, especially the pink-tipped hydrangeas. Gorgeous. You have a good pile of books there - I think you read very fast :) The airplane museum looks great - I have five grandsons who would enjoy that!

Jeannine ~ Your pot roast recipe sounds delicious...perfect for the cooler weather and so comforting.

Colleen ~ I think Halloween is celebrated more in Canada and the US...in the UK they have Guy Fawkes Day with big bonfires. It might be an excuse to get dressed up here...and collect a bag full of treats :-))

Kerrie Roberts ~ I think I have read some of those Murder in Provence books but not The Good Ship Murder series...am always looking for great books! Thank you

Patricia ~ 5 grandsons...how wonderful!! Enjoy that warm weather...and have fun with your precious grandchildren.
XO

Elaine ~ Greetings long time lurker...hope you will feel free to chime in with your comments more often.

Hi Leslie, So enjoyed this post and your trip to the air museum. My favorite season. Cooling just slightly here in San Diego now, I was able to wear a sweater yesterday and put away 2 pairs of sandals, ha. We didn't get any trick or treaters last year and none during covid, so just Fall wreaths on the front doors this year, no bags of candy to end up eating all by ourselves! But we do still have some neighbors go all out on the spooky decorations and our small city has a store to store trick or treat downtown.
I read "The Messy Lives of Book People" earlier this month and really enjoyed it. Also read her "The Little Italian Hotel", another fun get one. I enjoy your book recommendations.
"Stringy meat", ha- I love it! My best friend recently told me she also called pot roast that growing up, I'd never heard it before!
Take care :)

Getting hydrangeas cut and under cover before the drenching rain today was a very good idea. It's been a good day to stay cozy indoors. I've put The Messy Lives of Book People on hold at the library. How I love that service!

I have never been to the Aviation Museum, despite living here my entire life! I'll have to go one day. I enjoy your "soft Hallowe'en" decorating - have you heard the term "spoopy"? It's spooky, but softer, like cute ghosts and pumpkins - Hallowe'en without the gory/scary side. I'm a fan!

Brenda N ~ I MUST read The Little Italian Hotel...I love Italy and have been watching Italian themed shows of late...recalling the lovely weeks that I spent in Tuscany. I may need to return...Stringy Meat is a comment I overheard at a Pot Luck dinner where shredded beef was served in buns with a side of coleslaw. I think it describes the texture very well...the flavour of that new recipe was pretty amazing...I love an outside cut of prime rib and these bites tasted all like outside cuts :-))

Lorrie ~ We have been enjoying the sunshine today...frost on the cars this morning but it warmed up. Thankfully the aqua fit classes I attend are warm as I am not really a cold water person!! I am going to see if I can reserves the Little Italian Hotel that Brends N mentions....you might like it too?
