Alaska Cruise on Nieuw Amsterdam ~ What I packed and arriving in Vancouver

Relaxing on a Sea Day in comfortable surroundings.
The views are spectacular, the weather is warm and the seas are calm.

I packed carefully for the trip.
My wardrobe is basically black with white and grey accents.

What I packed:

Eileen Fisher :
black pants
tank top
linen jacket
black vest

black bamboo dress and long knit jacket

black textured skirt
St. John black knit top with silver sparkles

Gilmour white dress with black polka dots

Jeans
2 white linen tops
Saint James white and black striped V neck top
white scarf /shawl

David Cline grey print shirt
I wore it under my vest and again open as a layering piece with a tank and pants

Nanette Lepore white linen knit sweater

bathing suit and cover up
( I never used them as the pools were full of kids splashing and having fun!)

Hat gloves umbrella
Lands' End down jacket

Saint James raincoat

Columbia light rain jacket

underwear and bras
nightie

A souvenir purchase

I'll wear this on our boat!

We brought the grandchildren some colour changing Tee shirts
with Alaska animals on the front.

Views to the North Shore of Vancouver.

The Port of Vancouver

A beautiful day to walk around the seafront in Vancouver.

Salvador Dali sculpture

We met up with Brian's sister and her granddaughter and walked about before going out for lunch and dinner.
They had an early flight Sunday...
we slept in
on our way to the ferries
I popped into the South Granville Eileen Fisher
I purchased a black sleeveless top and some new jeans.

It's back to reality now...

We have many wonderful memories of this cruise and I would recommend this particular trip to anyone interested in experiencing
the natural beauty of BC and Alaska.
Holland America Nieuw Amsterdam was a particularly luxurious ship.

I hope that you have enjoyed this series of posts on the trip.

I loved this cruise too! I’d love to see the actual clothes you took!

I have indeed loved the posts about your cruise Leslie. It is fun to look at those pictures of Vancouver and know that soon we will be passing through there once again. I like to read of your travel wardrobe, especially as I am putting one together as we speak. It is tricky to get a good combination of clothes for both hot and cool weather (yes, layers I know, but I see it is currently 37-38c in the south of France!) I don't wear pants on those days, just floaty sleeveless dresses. We are planning to see Granville in October - do you have any recommended places for shopping or eating? Great post, thank you.

Have always wanted to see Alaska and a cruise seems like the way to do it. Did you take any small boat trips further inland or other day excursions? So glad you enjoyed it.

Oh too bad that I didn't take a picture of all the items as I packed. I do have a label on the sidebar of my blog where I do "tag" my purchases You could look at the label for Eileen Fisher for example and scroll through where I show items when I purchase them or wear them as an OOTD

When I was last in the south of France the women all wore floaty linen dresses from Italy, they also had wide brimmed straw hats and those delightful French market baskets.
Layer are the best idea...I love the Eileen Fisher "system line" of basics...The tank tops are dressy enough for evening and pair well with a jacket or sweater and are slim enough to be worn under another longer sleeved top.
We like to go to Vij's Indian fusion restaurant...its a lively popular spot and they don't take reservations but you can sit and have a drink and they bring around free appies. Cin Cin on Robson is good as is Cioppino's in Yaletown. There are many 5 star restaurants which take reservations but you will need to book well in advance.
I like to shop on South Granville at the smaller shops...Eileen Fisher has a location there and I never miss an oportunity to shop there as they carry petites.
If you are wanting to see gardens...Stanley Park, Van Dusen, Queen Elizabeth Park, The Japanese Gardens at UBC and they also have a wonderful Museum of Anthropology. Walk the seawall and take a drive along the ocean...there is a hop on hop off bus which is a great way to get the lay of the land early on your visit.
Let me know if you need more ideas!

Our Alaskan cruise (earlier in the season) was quite cool---so I had a black v neck cashmere sweater in my cruise wardrobe. But, like you, I had a lot of black Eileen Fisher along for the right. One of my favorite outfits was the EF black slouchy pants with a black EF slick jersey soft V neck top with elbow length sleeves. I found I could dress it up with various scarves, my favorite being a quite large one from Madewell with a self fringe. I wore this outfit on our 23 day cruise every chance I got! The best thing about my black EF items is that they all mixed and matched. For daytime and excursion wear I had my denim jeans along with black knit pants and navy knit pants and various tops. My Uniqlo light down sweater jackets was great along with a longtime favorite quilted vest (navy) from Lafayette 148. For shoes, I took one pair of black heels, some black flats, and leather lace up sneakers (black and white and navy). Surely I can pack lighter next time--but I was please with what I packed.

We did take some excursions---fishing in Wrangell, crabbing in Ketchikan along with a crab luncheon, and a fabulous catamaran excursion in the Tracey Arm fjord. We love Alaska!

We did not take any excursions although there were many we could have taken...we wanted to explore the small towns at our own pace. Whale watching and the train ride to the Yukon were very popular...some boats also took people out fishing or crabbing. There were some other entertaining events in the towns...a logger show was one that drew a huge crowd and we could hear them cheering as we walked about on the streets in Ketchikan.
You can search online at many of the cruise ship sights to get more info.

I don't think you overpacked as you were cruising for over 3 weeks!
It must have been a more indepth tour of Alaska, no wonder you loved it!
I had an email from a reader who went on the cruise one September and they had terribly rough seas...so bad that they were confined to their cabin and told to lie down to avoid motion sickness! I am so glad that the weather co-operated for the trip.

I've never taken any excursions on the Alaska cruise either. I like to wander in the towns and spend time with my mother-in-law who is now deceased. I've never been in the pool on any cruise and I've cruised a lot. It's always too crowded to really swim. Floaty linen and Eileen Fisher could be my go-to's for life.

What a lovely trip you've had. But I had to laugh at your photographs of the towel 'creatures'. Is there no escape from them anywhere?! I don't mind a few flowers or petals decorating my bed or some very simple towel shaping, but time wasted torturing the towels instead of doing a thorough clean annoys me and the towels look miserable things once they've been unraveled. (I came home from our last holiday and wrote a short story about it.)

Sounds like your organization and streamlined color choices worked well for you. EF clothes are so comfortable and great for traveling. And with blacks and grays you can add any fun pop of color on your toes like you did. Fun how they match the carpet!

I agree that linen and Eileen Fisher are great looks both simple and very comfortable.
The pools were smaller than I expected but I didn't feel like I missed out on swimming as there was so much to keep us entertained. I just published a post on my visit to the EF shop!

They even offered a towel folding workshop on board!!!
Our stateroom was very tidy and clean...we had a fabulous steward taking good care of us.

The nail polish is Deborah Lippmann and is called Between the Sheets...a first for me.

Yes, I read that and had to smile at your suitably dry response the you didn't attend!

I cannot imagine using that skill except perhaps to entertian the grands!!!
