Some summer reads...

Summer Reads...

Loved this murder mystery by Jessica Fellowes.
She's the niece of Julian Fellowes from Downton Abbey and Gosford Park.

I've also read Julian's novels
Past Imperfect, Snobs and Belgravia

Ami McKay writes wonderful books
I read her previous two novels
The Virgin Cure and The Birth House

This novel was very rich in atmosphere and painted a wonderful picture of what it might be like to be a "witch" in an era when witchcraft
the unknown and unseen world were being explored.

Ami transported me into the fascinating world of Gilded Age in New York
set in the late 1800's...

I've promised this book to mabon moon a reader who lives in Victoria.
I hope she will enjoy it as much as I did.

My current book The Seagull by Ann Cleeves
fresh from the local library...
suggested by the well read Madame La-Bas
writer of the blog New Year New Dreams.

It's a well crafted mystery and a real page turner!

The most recent book from our local library
This novel is set in a lovely little village in Provence
the characters are rich and the story evolves slowly over the years.

I've just started reading
Etta and Otto and Russell and James
by Canadian born author Emma Hooper

Thanks for the mention. I could not put The Seagull down. There are just so many books to read. I want to finish Painted Girls tonight so that I can get to my library reserves asap. I've also got two used books waiting for me. Are you on your boat? It's wonderful weather. Enjoy.

When I saw the title 'The Witches in New York' I kind of made a little shriek as I love any type of book like this. I'm currently reading 'Fallen'by Lauren Kate and then I'm going to move on to 'The Discovery of Witches' by Deborah Harkness and this just yelled yessss! to me. I'm definitely adding this to my list of summer reads!

I recently visited Shakespeare and Company bookshop in Paris and it was like a dream! The walls covered floor to ceiling in books and I found so many great reads! I ended up taking home a crime and murder mystery book but there were so many books related to Witches and the supernatural:)if you'd like to check out my blog post of my visit here is the link: http://fleurdubelle.blogspot.com/2018/07/finding-cutest-bookshop-in-paris.html

I read The Birth House after attending a book club in Canada with my daughter - I enjoyed both the club and the book. Have noted down The Witches of New York and the author Ami McKay, as I think I would like it too. Meantime I am reading 'Good Living Street' by Tim Bonyhady. It is the true story of the author's Viennese heritage and his family, wealthy Viennese Jews and acquaintances of Mahler, Klimt, et al, and who brought their Viennese Secession artefacts to Australia to escape the war. I have never read Fellowes - must be time I did :)

Love that you are sharing book ideas. I tried to read The Witches of New York but it wasn’t for me. At the moment, I am thoroughly enjoying Our Souls at Night. It is a short, wonderful read about two 70 year olds who stay together at night for company in the loneliest part of the day. I believe the book is being made into a movie. Also, I am making my way through the Louise Penny books. I am now on number 7. Just the best series. Our book club read 'Educated" and it made for lots of good discussion. Thanks again for sharing yourreading list.

Love Mary Lawson. I just added that book to my list. Thanks.

If you haven't read An American Marriage, I highly recommend it. Best book so far this year for me. I'm about to start (late I know) A Little Life, which is a very tense, and sad book which I've been putting off. I'll see how it goes.....

I love a good mystery. My book club reading keeps me so busy it's hard to sneak in extra books, but I do manage! Right now I'm reading The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford. Kept seeing references to the Mitford sisters, so decided I had to check it out. Oh, and your roses (previous post) are beautiful!! Love them. xo Deborah

Oh you have a treat in store if you have not read any of julian's books! I just heard that the Downton Abbey cast will be making a full length feature film!!!

I was not sure about the Witches book until I started reading it and then I was hooked...I enjoyed Old Souls at Night too. Louise Penny's next book is due out in the Fall and I am excited to get my hands on her book! She is such a talented writer...so many good authors and books out there...we are so fortunate to have so many choices!

I will add that title to my book list...thank you. I could not read a Little Life...just too sad.

I read her book a few years ago...those sisters were quite entertaining.
I do not belong to any book clubs...I have a friend who is in 3 of them and still finds time to read other books!

I really enjoyed The Gravity of Birds recently, and am currently reading a G.M.Malliet mystery, In Prior Wood. I've read all her books - some are sort of weak, but this one is great. The characters have come to life and the English village setting is a delight, as usual. I mean, a handsome vicar who is a former MI5 agent, what's not to love? There's plenty of humour, too.

I have just finished Promise Me, Dad by Joe Biden - love it but it was quite sad in parts.

Have started The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley which I received for my birthday in February but have only just got around to starting.

These all sound interesting Leslie. Will check them out. I always appreciate book sharing ideas.
Right now I'm reading Pat Conroy. Beach music. He is a great storyteller. He's fluid and poetic on every page.

Have decided after talking to some people in my local bookstore - not to read it. Even the ones who loved it said it was so hard and sad, really shook them.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I only know one person who read the book and she is an avid reader of all types of books and suggested that I not read it.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I must try to find some of her books a vicar whose pat career was an MI5 agent does sounds interesting!

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I read Seven Sisters and loved the plot....Lucinda Riley was one of my mother's favourite authors.

Even the title Beach Music sounds lyrical...

I have The Mitford Murders on hold at the library, along with another one that you recommended "Rue du Amelie" I think????
I just finished "The Word is Murder" by Anthony Horowitz - I like his books but find it difficult to describe them - he also wrote last year's "The Magpie Murders".
I have been reading the Camilla Lackberg mystery series that is based in Sweden and I've just started Cara Black's series that all take place in Paris.
I think I'll put some of the other suggestions - from you and the commentators - on hold at the library - thank you.

I loved "A Discovery of Witches" - have been reading the sequel but the first book was the best.

As well as the 'Vera' books, Anne Cleeves has written a series set on the Scottish Shetland islands, and many of both series have been made into tv programmes which I've really enjoyed, as well as other detective novels. I love them.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Yes the Room on Rue Amelie....definitely one of the better books I have read recently. I have never read any of Anthony Horowitz's books...but I have enjoyed Cara Blacks books and she has a new one out this summer.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Ann really can weave an engaging story! I like how she adds the twists and turns so that you cannot predict what is going to happen! Hope you have a lovely holiday Dottoressa

I need to watch some of her TV Vera series mysteries but only after I have read them all!
