Spring Fling ~ a gossamer floral scarf and The Humble Bungalow Garden

It is officially Springtime in Victoria!

Ah...a long awaited breath of fresh air...
and there are beautiful flowers in our midst.

I went to the Avenue to run some errands today and I spied this gorgeous gossamer soft floral scarf and knew immediately that it was just the thing I needed to inject a wee bit of Spring into my wardrobe.

When I wear this scarf 

I will feel the energy that Spring Flowers can impart...

The sunny shades of yellow and orange cannot help but cheer us...

Such delicate and intricate details in this Hellebore

I do love Hellebores in the Humble Bungalow Garden 

 (there is always room for more)

Over the past weekend my husband dug up and reworked 

an area near our asparagus bed.

The ideas for the design were mine but he made it happen.

He dug up our rhubarb and garlic bed and lay exposed aggregate pavers.

We went to the garden center and chose some new pots and found three healthy hellebores to plant inside them.

We have ordered a few Mondo Grass plants...

Now we need to buy a few smaller black pots in which to plant them.

Here is the view from above...

rains are forecast for the next few days so the new plants will get plenty of water.

I was laid up in bed for a few days with Vertigo and have a middle ear infection.

The doctor prescribed antibiotics and I am currently staying away from the pool.

(I think that the germs must have come from the Recreation Center.)

The cats have been marvelous and keeping me company.

I've sipped many many cups of tea

and 

dined on healthy salads and soups.

The Woman in Cabin 10 was a true page turner...

I read it in one day.

I can highly recommend it...

Our dear friends from France gave me a lovely scarf for Christmas.
It is made by a company called Letol in France and I love it!

What a differance a day makes...

This past week of weather has been punctuated with rain and clouds...
and when the sun makes an appearance
we rejoice!

Today was a sunny day with clear blue skies...
a perfect day for walking along the seafront.
There were crowds of people out and about walking
obviously with the same thing in mind.
The views were spactacular...Mount Baker looked like an ice cream sundae.
The frosty white snow stood out against the deeper blue of the sky and it felt so much closer than its far off location in Washington State.

Just before we were leaving for our walk I spied some crocus blooms and had to stop and take a few pictures to share with you. Mr. HB is used to me delaying our departures when a garden flower catches my attention!

Earlier in the week I stopped to capture the Hellebore Blooms

One sunny morning 

the sunlight illuminated Our Humble Bungalow 

bathing it in a warm and cozy glow.

Our arts and crafts bungalow is dark

due to the use of wood in the interior

and the design of the roof overhang and front porch detail.

We rely on many lights and even more lamps during the Fall and Winter.

There is salt spray from the ocean on the windows in our living room

which always surprises me as we are a block away from the ocean.

The gusty winds carry the salt spray and deposit it on anything and everything. 

(I'll be calling our window washer in a few weeks.)

The Massage Therapist worked on my shoulder this week.

 While the session was uncomfortable (painful) 

it was so worth it 

because I have more range of motion and less pain.

I plan to go every week for awhile...

I am starting to feel like a "high maintenance" woman!

We went to the Belfry for the world premiere of Forget About Tomorrow.

I highly recommend this play if you ever get the chance to see it.

In other news 

our lovely DIL and I dined out one weeknight

then we headed to The VV Boutique for a peek.

(aka Value Village)

I found a silk twill scarf with hand rolled edges.

made by Vetter of Switzerland.

The scarf should go well with this top.

Pops of colour...

Autumn is a lovely time of year for enjoying the colours.

I wear mostly blacks and greys 

so I can see here with this example of contrast 

that a spot of colour

may be in order!

The pumpkin patch was full of families this Sunday.

Many local farmers grow pumpkins and they also offer hayrides, hot chocolate and some even have corn mazes.

I just love the field of orange pumpkins!

It is lovely when one discovers a magazine that has well written and informative articles.

Today I am cozying up in my newest linen scarf...

no pop of orange today 

instead

I am wearing a red lipstick 

which is helping to liven up my OOTD.

followed by

a spritz of Le Labo Rose 31 and I am ready.

It has been busy here in The Humble Bungalow!
I need to catch my breath...

Living life fully, and being present in the moment comes first,
reporting and recording events here on the blog are second...
I hope you appreciate that fact.

Shopping, knitting, running errands, volunteering at my club, and hanging out with the grand babies...
have been keeping me hopping...and I LOVE it!

The summer daisies are putting on quite the show in my neighbours' garden.

I like to admire them from afar as their scent is not to my liking but I love the simplicity of the flowers, they are just so pretty and cheerful!

I can visualize them in a Bon Maman jam jar 

atop a gingham checked table cloth.

Chester thought he would "help" me.

The entires are underneath him so I waited until he woke up!

Do you love to wear scarves?
I do...but I opt for lighter weight ones in silk or linen for summer.

Paris books...garden delights.

Memories of my trip last Spring to Paris have been flittering about in my mind...
by cultivating a few French habits this helps keep the feelings fresh and alive.

French Market Basket from Madison and Muse in the Cadboro Bay Village

Some things that help me recall my trip and french focus:

my morning ritual of a cafe creme served in a wide bowl...
the application of perfume
wearing pretty lingerie
nibbling a decadent croissant from time to time
walking in my neighbourhood and beyond
taking myself out for coffee and sitting outside watching the people walk by
reading about Paris in books and on blogs
perusing the produce and eating local fresh food that is "in season"
popping into a french charcuterie for lunch basics
harvesting our fresh home grown vegetables...our asparagus crop is amazing!
making a simple French vinaigrette
browsing in my French cookbooks

shopping in a French inspired store
I treated myself to a new French Market basket
a new linen apron
and a scarf!

a wee french inspired lunch

savoured at the table

with a large glass of sparkling Perrier

(if I was in France it probably would have been a glass of vin rose)

great for cooking, cleaning and wearing in the garden.

I was on a roll and so why not buy a new linen scarf too?

If you live in Victoria or come for a visit do yourself a favour and pop into the shop.

Margo, the owner, is very knowledgeable, has lived in France and her stock is sumptuous.

If I have a windfall I am heading straight to her shop to buy linen sheets...

My Paris reading list has been getting larger 

especially after going to the library and Ivy's books on The Avenue

I have a few more on my book shelf waiting...

Our garden has a dedicated asparagus bed which is providing us with fresh picked asparagus.

We usually have this as an appetizer before our main course.

I pop it in a shallow pan with boiling water 

 let it sit in there bubbling for 5 minutes

drain and serve 

with a dollop of mayonnaise and a bit of salt and pepper.

Voila!

Strange things are happening to the rhubarb plants.

flowers are emerging

We have harvested several pickings 

 stewed the stalks to enjoy with a dollop of fresh yogurt.

oh and there is another strange thing growing in the garden...

looks like The Jack in The Pulpit plant.

I do not remember planting this!

Could it have come into the garden as a hitch hiker with another plant?

My goodness I am keeping my eye on this one.

Life is never dull when one has a garden to potter about in...nature is full of surprises!
