We have a winner!

Thank you for stopping by and reading The Humble Bungalow Blog...
the sun is shining on this sunny Sunday.

Happy Father's Day to my husband and son...
and Dad I am remembering you with love and affection today.
XO

The summer daisies are putting on quite the show in my neighbours' garden.
I like to admire them from afar as their scent is not to my liking but I love the simplicity of the flowers, they are just so pretty and cheerful!
I can visualize them in a Bon Maman jam jar
atop a gingham checked table cloth.

Many of you left comments on the blog about "what makes you feel chic"
Leaving your name and a comment
meant that you could be entered to win the scarf.

I used a simple blue and white bowl...
wrote all the names on pieces of paper.

Chester thought he would "help" me.
The entires are underneath him so I waited until he woke up!

Then I mixed up the entries and randomly picked a name.

Congratulations Honey Bee !
Please email me bungalowhostess@gmail.com
with your mailing address and I will pop the scarf in the post this week.

Thank you all for your comments on what makes you feel chic.

Thirty Chic Days by Fiona Ferris and a Hostess Giveaway...

Do you love to wear scarves?
I do...but I opt for lighter weight ones in silk or linen for summer.
They are perfect on a cloudy or rainy day when I step out of the house to run some errands or go for my walk. Scarves so effortlessly add a little splash of colour and dress up the casual outfits that I wear at home or about in our neighbourhood.

I recently picked up a pretty raw silk scarf imported from India at The Bungalow card and gift shop on Estevan Avenue in Oak Bay.

It is a versatile long lightweight raw silk scarf with a fringe at the ends.
Soothing Sea colours for summer
you could tie this around the brim of your sun hat
or wrap it around your shoulders...
it looks great with denim too.

I finished reading blogger and author Fiona Ferris' new book
Thirty Chic Days Practical Inspiration For a Beautiful Life.
It is a lovely book chock full of great ideas and simple ways to add luxury to your every day round.
She has written a great guide book for women of all ages...
I picked up a few new tips and you might too.
Thank you again Fiona for sending me your book!

To enter the giveaway please leave me a comment and tell me what makes you feel chic.

The giveaway will close on midnight PST Saturday June 18th.

I will announce the winner on Sunday June 19th.

~ Good Luck ~
Hope that you have a fabulous week.

Polish Your Poise with Madame Chic...a new book giveaway by Jennifer L. Scott.

Jennifer Scott kindly sent me an advanced reading copy of her new book "Polish Your Poise."
I enjoyed reading her other two books "Lessons from Madame Chic "and "At Home with Madame Chic."
If you don't already know Jennifer, she writes the blog The Daily Connoisseur and has You Tube videos online. You can pop over and read her posts on her classic 10 item wardrobe...and she's recently been speaking about the tendency that some people have towards dressing too casually for events like weddings, the theatre and when dining out.

Jennifer is a very wise and talented young woman, married, with two young daughters.
She's busy taking care of her home and family, yet makes time to write for several hours each day...

I brewed a big pot of Lapsang Souchong tea and devoted a couple of relaxing afternoons to her book.
Her thoughts on poise reminded me of my upbringing...
I can recall the same advice being taught by my Mother, and similar thoughts echoed by the elegant and poised woman who led the Saturday afternoon Charm School that I attended!

I think our society has moved away from teaching these lessons...being polite and poised is never out of fashion.
The book would make a nice gift for a young woman just starting out in the workforce...
I can envision a mother giving a copy to her teenage daughter.

Manners, cultivating and developing personal style, being a good neighbour, dressing appropriately, how to handle social media, maintaining an air of mystery, and more topics are discussed in the book.

One thing that I took away from this book is that we have strayed away from the etiquette and manners that were an integral part of my 1950's and 1960's upbringing and that it's never too late to teach these values to the next generation.

Jennifer has graciously offered to send one of my readers a signed copy of her book.
If you are interested in this giveaway please leave a comment.
Please enter by October 30th at midnight PST.

Good luck and I hope that you have a very pleasant week!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...and the giveaway goes to...

My sister and I took Mom to see the "Festival of Trees" at the Empress and we were most definitely impressed.
I thought you might like to see the pretty trees...

The lobby of the Empress with a grand tree...very "Empressive!"

Love the white lights on the tree outside the hotel.

The Crystal ballroom.

I've never considered decorating a tree with shoes...

a little window shopping...

I think this coat is sumptuous.

Cashmere makes a great gift for those on your Christmas list...
socks, a scarf or perhaps a sweater.

Oodles of luxurious gifts...
and speaking of gifts it's time to draw for the giveaway.

I chose our Finel modernist bowl which is made in Finland.

Wrote out the names of those who entered the draw...

All the names went into the bowl and after a good mix up of the entires
I pulled out this one.

Congratulations to Madame La-Bas, the author of the blog New Year New Dreams.
Please email me your mailing address at bungalowhostess@gmail.com.

Hope you are all keeping cozy and warm...
we awoke to a dusting of snow
which is so pretty
but cold and icy.
Winter coats, cashmere socks, down vests, lined boots, gloves and wooly scarves are required
when we venture out for a walk and we need to tread carefully as the ice is very slippery.

I'll be back soon.

Wardobe oxygen ~ Orange you glad you tuned in?

Let's just get one thing straight...I love black, grey and white.
I have considered that there may be some "merit" to inviting a wee bit of colour into my closet.

A bright bold and vibrant shade...
Orange Crush,
my current fave
that may have been influenced by Hermes boxes

or perhaps my need for Vitamin C.

Fasten your seat belts...

Cashmere cardigan
from Lands' End

Ribbed sleeve detail
pockets
a longer length which is cozy with skinny jeans.

Getting "friendly" with the fridge!

The cardigan might be just what I need to grab on a cold rainy day.

I can think of pairings with my classic Lanvin scarf...

or with some beautiful roses!

or a lily

I will be wearing this cashmere cardigan to French class...

I forgot that this Coach scarf had orange in the pattern
it was a lovely Xmas gift from my son and his wife many years ago.

If you could only see how chic my French instructor is you'd understand why I am studying not only the language but her Parisian style.

She wears simple understated clothing...
tosses a scarf on in a way that one might think she just "threw it on"
wears a minimum of jewelry...
(a wedding band and beautiful pearl or hoop earrings)
she wears flats...and not just the iconic ballerinas...loafers too
her trench coat looks vintage as does her Max Mara wool coat...
she is not reed thin, she has womanly curves
she's a brunette in the style of much younger Catherine Deneuve.

I am most impressed by her haircut...
it reminds me of Audrey Hepburn in Sabrina when she returns from Paris...
it looks like she didn't do a thing other than wash it
but I am sure that cannot be true.

She exudes Parisian Chic...
I am learning a lot in French Class...
much more than I signed up for!

She tells me that our trips to Paris will overlap for a few days and that we should meet up for coffee!

A bientot.

Don't forget about the Humble Bungalow giveaway...
details are in the previous post.

Bonne Chance!
