Last Weekend's round up...a bit late but I've been busy!

Walking affords leisure time to soak in the scenery and often I see things that are rather strange...like this!
I wonder who put this here and is there a message?

A spooky stuffed toy perched atop a crypt in Ross Bay Cemetery...

Red Geraniums planted on a vintage cannon at the corner of St. Charles St. and Dallas Road...
the house is in the mission style and we have always referred to it as "The Cannon House."

Sunny yellow dahlia the size of a dinner plate...

White tipped Red Dahlia, only one in a garden full of blooms...
situated on Hollywood Crescent...
you may know this home as it has the most amazing showcase of flowers at any time of year.
People frequently stop their car to take pictures...I have overheard the double decker tour bus operator's comment on this too.

Walking everyday is key for me to keep healthy and although it is not always easy
to be dedicated and motivated I just do it.
When the weather is sunny and warm it is ideal,
but soon the gale force winds will blow and the torrential rains will fall.

My knee has been troubling me these past few days...
not sure why
 or what I've done
so I have walked gently taking notice of my knee.

Walking does give one an appetite for food.

"Winner Winner Chicken Dinner"
where does that expression come from?

Ina Garten does it again...
I've been watching her series on TV.
She has the MOST beautiful home in a spectacular location...
I think I'd love the Hamptons!

Fall colour and wintry root veggies...which will be roasted to maximize their flavour.

I've been reading up on Paris and French Femme style lately...
getting ready for my trip to Paris next spring.

Following on the heels of Jennifer L. Scott's Madame Chic book is this book
which practically fell off the shelf into my hands at Ivy's Book Shop.

It's insightful, funny, very honest and totally entertaining.
I think the authors are rather self deprecating in their admissions of their total "Parisian Femmes Confessions."

We served French style radishes last Sunday from the Moss Street Market
they slummed a bit when served with seven layer dip and baked chips for appies.
Emma Bridgewater held the bar high.

Delicious and low in calories, they impart a delicate flavour that was not as hot as regular radishes.

The weekend is now a distant memory...
I have some French homework to attend to, a date with Mom and Sis, and the garden is in transition which requires some attention...

Will be back when time allows...
please excuse me if I have been remiss but life is full and I have been busy
plus I like to live in the moment and savour all the joys of the day.

Thank you for popping by and visiting Our Humble Bungalow.

At Home with Madame Chic a new book by Jennifer L. Scott

Have you had the pleasure of reading Jennifer L. Scott's book "Lessons from Madame Chic?"
If not you might want to get a copy and read it before you delve into her newest book "At Home With Madame Chic: Becoming a Connoisseur of Daily Life.

Jennifer is a gifted writer, blogger and mother of two...
She lives with attention to detail and does so with a gracious style and poise.

Jennifer sent me an advanced reading copy and I've savoured her new book and deliberately have not rushed through the chapters...I re-read passages and thought about each chapter after I closed the book.
Taking a leisurely tea break mid afternoons with Jennifer's book was a luxury.
Her thoughts, daily routines, philosophy of life, and her attitude of gratitude all resonate with me.

Reading this book now in my late 50's I can honestly say that I wish I had read this when I was much younger and struggling with the rigorous and demanding schedule of motherhood. It would have given me insight into how I could improve and streamline my routine and do it in a way that was positive and enriching.
I am certain that I would have benefited from her fashion advice, domestic tips and especially her signature 10 piece wardrobe strategy.

Her home keeping habits make sense and are streamlined to fit into her busy family life.
She adds elegant touches wherever she can and likes to putter in her balcony garden and grows orchids.
Jennifer makes sure that she has some personal time to recharge and relax, not always easy for a young mother of two, but so sensible.
I know how important it is to have some quiet time...even if you can only rest while the babies are napping.

Some highlights from her book without giving it all away are:
~ use your best everyday ~
~ prepare nourishing and healthy food (recipes included) ~
~ cultivate a 10 piece wardrobe ~
~ listen to uplifting and beautiful music everyday (suggested play lists included) ~
~ Madame Chic's recipe for a fabulous organic cleaner ~
~ finding time for yourself ~
~ and so much more...you'll have to read it for yourself!

I really enjoyed reading her book and am sure that you will too.
I also think that this book would make a great gift...especially when paired with the first one.

Perhaps you know a lovely and deserving woman who enjoys cultivating and honing her chic habits.
You can order the book here....

Meet Jennifer here on her You Tube page, she has a lot of great thoughts and a wide variety of videos.
Happy Watching!

Thank you Jennifer for allowing me to read your book and share my thoughts and comments on your book.
I wish you every success on the publication of your new book...

Hugs,

Orange...a pop of colour that elevates the spirit and energizes.

The heart of the home...
our kitchen
in The Humble Bungalow
where I spend many contented hours cooking, baking and cleaning.

Orange Gerberas in a vintage vase add a shot of colour.

I keep an old fashioned day timer in which I record our appointments and meals.

Mandarin oranges add colour and a tangy flavour to this coleslaw salad...

Mandarin Orange Coleslaw

Shred or slice a red cabbage
chop a few scallions
grate a large carrot
1 cup mandarin oranges sliced in half
1/4 cup toasted pine nuts
1/4 cup dried cranberries

Place in a bowl and top with dressing.

Dressing

1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons orange juice
1/2 cup vegetable oil

Toss together and chill until ready to serve.
Enjoy.

I served this to company with BBQ ribs and boiled new potatoes topped with butter and freshly chopped mint.

Dessert with a little help from Ina Garten.
It is from her Barefoot Contessa Parties cookbook.
(You could substitute the lemons for oranges and make orange bars.)

A delicious and easy recipe.
The Kitchen aid gets plenty of work here in The Humble Bungalow.
I love mine and they come in many colours...even orange!

Luscious lemon squares served with fresh blackberries.

This luxurious linen towel is made specifically to clean glass and crystal.
I use it to clean the windows.
It is from the Irish Linen Shop here in Victoria and I cannot recommend it highly enough...
some may like micro fibre for this job but I am a die hard linen fan.

The drawers in the kitchen have been cleaned and sorted.

The Humble Bungalow everyday cutlery is Reed and Barton stainless.

If you have a bumper crop of tomatoes you might like to pop them in a hot oven for a few minutes
so that they take on a rich flavour and top them with some freshly grated pepper and sea salt.
I like to drizzle mine with some balsamic crema...which is a reduced balsamic vinegar.
I buy mine from the deli area of Thrifty Foods.

I'm feeling in an orange mood and will pop this vintage silk Lanvin scarf on when I go out to do my errands.
It may hide my pearls but that's OK as I know they'll be on my neck...
rather like wearing nice lingerie..
it's a secret that makes me feel a bit more dressed up and adds that little bit of French Chic.

Hope that your week will be fun...
thank you for taking your precious time out to stop by my humble blog today
and I appreciate the emails you sent introducing yourselves to me.
It's nice to meet and connect with readers.

Ooh La La Paris with Jamie Cat Callan...fingers crossed!

I'm dreaming of Paris...
I've wanted to go to Paris for a long time.
I think it all started when I was a preteen and wore Evening in Paris cologne...those beautiful shaped cobalt blue perfume sets were regular gifts at Christmas and birthdays. Dabbing cologne on my pulse points made me feel very feminine and grown up.
I adore Audrey Hepburn and have watched all of her films many times.
I am particularly fond of her role in Sabrina...
do you remember when Sabrina comes back from Paris after attending cooking school with her new chic coiffure and her haute couture ensemble?
She exudes French Chic Style.

I am surprised that it has taken me so long to actually get motivated to go to Paris as I have wanted to go there for as long as I can remember...

Our two children arrived when I was in my early 20's so I could not just pack up and leave them...
then I was busy with my career.
It is only now that I am retired that I feel ready to make the trip.
It could be my 60th birthday present!

The French classes are starting up again next month after the summer break and I have registered and paid my dues.
I hope to join in the Cafe Pause locally one afternoon a week to converse entirely in French with others interested in practising the art of conversation...how better to prepare for interactions in Paris than to chat over a coffee?

My Paris plans have changed as my travel mate is having second thoughts so I have my name on Jamie Cat Callan's Ooh La La Paris Tour waiting list for next May.
You may know Jamie through her books...
if you haven't read her books you are in for a treat.
I love her writing style and her Parisian flair.
Her books are the perfect summer read especially of you are dreaming of Paris and French Chic Style.

Jamie graciously entertained 12 lucky women this past May while they saw the highlights of the city and were privileged enough to get "behind the scenes" in several exclusive shops.
By all accounts they had a delightful time...
I now have my hopes pinned on joining Jamie as she leads this tour next year.
I think I'll be re-reading Jamie's books to get me prepped for the tour!

I am saving in earnest for my trip to Paris.
A while back I mentioned that I was trying to figure out how to sell some of my modernist jewelry and I have recently rented a shelf in the local antique mall Vanity Fair on Fort Street.
So far I have successfully sold a beautiful Robert Larin bracelet.

I plan to keep the theme of my shelf in the modernist style...
I have some teak Dansk items, and lots of Swedish and Finnish art glass.
There are bangles and darling daughter is going to put some jewelry in as well.
I hope that this venture will prove to be a viable way to add to my savings...

Summertime is a great time to pick up a good book...
books do not have a season but I find more time to read when we are aboard our boat.
It is a much smaller space than the Humble Bungalow and there is no garden to take care of...
so when I have the boat ship shape it leaves me time to read.

In the spirit of thrift (and saving for Paris!) these books were borrowed from our public library.

I watched a TV series that sounds a lot like this book

I'll be visiting the Riviera (vicariously) when I delve into the pages of this one!

I'll continue to work hard to save for my Paris dream trip.
Are you dreaming and saving for something special?

I will be posting sporadically over the next week as I have a blog break planned so if you don't hear from me do not fret I will be back soon.

Watch and Learn...

Do you like to learn new things?
Are you constantly seeking ways to stimulate your brain?
You know what they say use it or lose it!

We all are different when it comes to learning and so there are many ways to teach someting new.
I learn best by doing..."experiential learning" is important for me to do it to remember what I have learned.
Others can see something once and they've got it...I envy those gifted students.
Some learners require a multi pronged approach...a combination of reading, watching and doing...
and repeat these many times until the concept has been adopted.

Here are a couple of videos to encourage you to learn something new today.
The first video is on scarf tying... a subject near and dear to my heart!
Thank you to my friend D who shared it with me.
I've watched the video several times and have a few new ways to tie my scarves...I hope you will enjoy it too.

The second video is bit more fun than educational...but nevertheless I wanted to share it with you.
I linked to it several years ago but it still feels "current" after rewatching it this morning.
The Secrets of Style French Chic....

I hope to be back in action posting some new OOTD shots when I swap out my winter closet for my summer one.
I plan to walk over to the consignment shop today and see what they have in stock for Spring and Summer.
It's a sunny day and I feel motivated to dress a little lighter.

Is the sun shining where you are today?
What are you going to wear as you go about your day?

Thoughts on building a basic wardrobe ~ OOTD ~ another installment on the wardrobe series.

I've read dozens of books on French Chic and French Dressing and as a result I have learned a lot.
Getting dressed for an occasion used to be such a chore for me...I would be stressed to the max.
I always struggled in this area and wondered how other women managed to look so pulled together and I couldn't help but feel inferior by comparison which honestly is not a great feeling at all.

I remember all too well how I would stand in front of the closet on the afternoon of an event or date and after looking through the garments I'd find myself muttering "I have nothing to wear!"
Then I'd race out in the car to the nearest shop in hopes that I'd find "the perfect solution."
Sadly I'd lay down my cash on a whim and a dream for a garment that promised to be the ticket to being suitably attired.
(I wonder now...could the sales clerks feel my desperation?)

After years of blunders (not to mention the hundreds of dollars) I can now identify some of my mistakes...

I bought garments on a whim, many were sale items and odd in more ways than one.
They were Orphans looking for a new home and I was their new mom!

I'd choose cheery patterns with no thought of what I would wear them with.
I purchased far too many things in a wide array of colours, many of which did not work with any other pieces in my wardrobe. (Quelle suprise!)
I never shopped with a list or bought any of the basics that I "needed"
I let myself fall into the big vortex of the power of persuasion...
the trendy, the now, or what the retailer was trying to get rid of by offering it to a witless shopper such as myself.

In the past few years I've completely reformed.
Thanks to blogs and books and an honest re-evaluation of myself.
It was fun, but it was also hard work.
To cut through the emotional part of shopping and get real.
To really look hard and pay attention.
To come to terms with my budget and lifestyle.

The French Chic approach to having fewer items that revolve around a neutral colour really works.

I chose basic black as the colour which I wear....initially I chose it because it helped camouflage the extra 35 pounds that I was carrying and now I choose it because it simplifies getting dressed and it is the most versatile colour that I can own and accessorize.

Accessories are where I dare to add some fun and personalize my look.
Like candy delights there are many options ~
from pearls to chunky beads, bangles and brooches,
thank goodness for scarves! my beloved scarves  ~ Hermes, vintage and new.
Wearing the same thing many times with different accessories makes it look fresh, never stale.

So picture this scene...
you stand in front of your closet and know that you have to be ready and out the door in half an hour.
You got a text saying "Check this restaurant out (a link attached) we'll be by to pick you up in 30 minutes!"
Are you in a state of panic?
I used to be frantic trying things on and when they didn't work I'd be throwing them on the bed or the floor.

Today I look at my basic blacks and decide what to choose.
Will it be a skirt, a dress, leggings and a tunic top, dark denim jeans or dress pants?
These all hang in my closet and they fit and yes they are all black.

There are black tops, a couple of black sweaters, a black and white print top which all can be mixed and matched.

Most of the shoes I own are black.

The new kids on the block are the Amalfi's and they are sooo comfy.
I LOVE the gross grain bows.

My handbags are all black too...
it might be fun to add a bright colour but in the past when I have done this I grow weary of them.
This may sound very boring but it works for me.

I wore this combo on New Years Eve.
The skirt is a thrift shop find and the lace top was purchased at Winners.

Black and white work well for me.
White shirts, white tank tops pearls and black bottoms are made for each other.

I am remembering my teen years when I was a waitress at The Oak Bay Beach Hotel!
We wore black uniforms and white aprons!
I think we were paid $3.75 hour plus tips.
My tips weighed down the pockets of my uniform and when Mr. HB came to pick me up after work we'd head straight to the Oak Bay Avenue A&W where we'd be served by wait staff at the drive in wearing roller skates!
(Burgers, fries and root beer but I digress!)

For dinner out celebrating my BFF's birthday...
I opted for a black tunic top by Jones of NY
Legging by C'est Moi
Boots by Hush Puppies
Scarf by Echo
pearls an anniversary gift from Mr. HB

I got dressed lickety split.
Having basics in black really help.
I can be ready in no time.

I had extra time to read my book before the car arrived.
I threw on my Chillax coat, grabbed my Roots cross body bag and I was out the door.

I felt good.
Not overdressed or under dressed.

The Chanel lipstick made it's debut.
(Orchidee)

I am loving the new perfume Mitsouko by Guerlain.

The grey hair is really making a statement.
I feel like I have grown into myself these past few years of exploration.
I had to listen to my head and pay heed to my heart.

Growing older is not as intimidating as I thought it might be...
acceptance and knowing and
understanding one's limitations
coupled with realistic expectations are helping me to realize my next chapter.

"Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty."

  ~ Henry Ford ~

I have a book where I write down every single wardrobe purchase.
I keep track of what I need and it really helps me from getting distracted or over spending.
I save money every month with a look to the future...
and ponder the possibility of a Chanel hand bag...and yes it would be BLACK!

Forever Chic has arrived in The Humble Bungalow!

Blogger and writer Tish Jett's book Forever Chic arrived in the post this week!
The chic and savvy Deja Pseu hosted a giveaway on her blog and I was fortunate enough to be the recipient of this delicious book. Thank you Deja Pseu I am so grateful that the book arrived safely after the post office mix up.

I can hardly wait to read it but it will have to wait as we are busy with friends and the calendar is getting filled up.
I'd like to hunker down and take a couple of days and simply soak in all of Tish's words of wisdom.

I'll write a review of the book when I am finished reading it.

(Did you notice the card that Deja Pseu sent with the book?)

My lazy lunch...
leftover butternut squash, a few strands of spaghetti noodles, and an egg beaten up and topped with chives.
When I bought this wee frying pan I had no idea that it would get so much use.
It comes in so handy for roasting nuts, cooking up an egg or two and making a single serving of French Toast.

I must be off as I have some chocolate zucchini cakes to bake.
The Root Cellar had zucchini on sale and I could not resist a bargain.

Be Well and remember Kindness never goes out of style.

~ Paris Street Style ~

I recently picked up a copy of Paris Street Style from the local library and read it cover to cover in an afternoon.
This little book is a real gem!

It's chock full of great tips and an interesting assortment of fabulous photos showing chic women wearing clothes with French flair and panache. All of the women added their personal touches so they do not come across as cookie cutter models.
The interviews of 25 personalities involved in the fashion industry add depth...
these "fashion insiders" share their advice.

I think a copy of Paris Street Style should find a home with the other French Style books on my bookshelf.

Essentials that you need to know about French chic...
Notes from the book jacket include;
8 items that everyone should own.
Accessories.
Classic handbags that last a lifetime.
The ideal jeans to wear Monday through Sunday.

The little black dress is perfect for you.
Mixing vintage, brand new luxury and dirt cheap pieces.

Run! don't walk and get your mitts on this gem of a book.
If you are at all interested in French Chic this will out a smile on your face.

Speaking of French Chic,
I just found out that I was one of the lucky readers to win a copy of Tish Jett's new book
Forever Chic: Frenchwomen's Secrets for Timeless Beauty, Style, and Substance.
Blogger Deja Pseu offered a generous giveaway and I am so excited!
Thank you so much!
I cannot wait for it to arrive so I can read it.

Hope you have a fabulous weekend.

OOTD ~ a wardrobe in flux

My weight loss journey has been surprisingly easy given the guidance and tools offered by WW...but now...
my clothes are baggy and many are rather unflattering...
oodles have been donated because I have been stern with myself thinking that IF I keep the bigger clothes, I am giving myself permission to wear them again in the future.

The challenge that I am facing is how to reassemble a new wardrobe on a budget.
I cannot nor do I want to live everyday in my walking attire...
which I hate to admit that I am pretty much doing right now because that is what fits!

I am combing thrift and consignment shops for great basics...
accessories are still my best friends and of those I have quite a variety of scarves and necklaces.
I had to buy some new lingerie ~ thanks to my BFF for noticing and delicately suggesting that as I had lost weight that my bras were not doing their job!

On my current wish list are:
a great fitting pair of black trousers
jeans
cashmere sweater
white tee tops

I am concerned that my winter down coat and jacket may be too large but I may be able to get away with wearing them if they do not look like they swallow me up! If they are too vast I will consign them and find replacements as they keep me warm in the cold snaps that we get here in the winter. I will be walking a lot so I do want to be cozy.

Thinking of dressing on a budget makes one assess what is really important to have in the closet.
I returned to my beloved copy of Parisian Chic to review what Ines de la Fressange suggests and she has great advice.

She refers to her go to basics as  "The Magnificent Seven"
A man's blazer
a trench coat
a navy sweater
a tank top
a LBD
jeans
leather jacket

I'll need to find a well fitting dress for evening and I do lean toward black as it goes with everything and always looks appropriate.

I've never felt like a trench coat was "me" but I am reconsidering the idea as a single breasted trench could be very useful here in our rainy Pacific Northwest.

I think I might pass on the man's blazer and the leather jacket but I am in favour of all the rest.

I kept my white shirt...

I pulled it out of the donation bag at the last minute
and I am happy that I did as I plan to use it as a jacket over a tank top.
Diane Keaton's wardrobe in Something's Gotta Give was the reason I changed my mind.
She looked so fabulous in her white shirt and tank with her khaki trousers...

New~to~me jeans
 as new condition
but at a fraction of the price!
(pinch me)

Pearls
a silk square scarf
and I can vary the accent pieces to get more mileage out of these jeans...
dress them up with cashmere
or
pop on a white tee and roll them up for a casual vibe.

I have an excuse to shop
Starting fresh
for a functional, minimalist wardrobe is going to be a fun adventure!

What basics would you suggest I include on my wish list?

OOTD ~ French Style...

This outfit is comfortable and casual and for some reason makes me feel more energetic.

Banana Republic Striped Breton Tunic Top
I am working (walking) on whittling away the hip and tummy areas.

Bangles that jangle...

Hermes scarf
that adds a hint of French flair.

I think that I will be dressing more casually in my retirement...
I am hoping to have more time to go thrift shopping too!

Thrift shopping is like a treasure hunt
as one never knows what gems are lurking in the racks.

It will be fun to find some new pieces...
perhaps it will become a regular blog post
"what I thrifted"

Have a lovely day...
