Playing with lipstick...a copy cat post.

Jennifer author of the blog "A Well Styled Life" wrote a post on lipstick.
"The Classic Red Lip: Not For Every Woman"
Her post made me think about lipstick shades...those that flatter and those that don't.

Luscious and Juicy Red Rose Hips

The Humble Bungalow Bathroom has the best lighting so that's where this experiment takes place.

My nose got a wee bit burnt on the last few days of our holiday.
I wear an SPF of 30 but there is a double dose of rays when one is out on the ocean.
(rays from above and then reflected up again from the sea)

OOTD
Grey linen Tee from Monoprix
White Club Monaco jeans
bare feet
custom made gold and diamond necklace

On my lips I am wearing
Fresh Sugar ~ Tulip
(my everyday shade that I wear in the bungalow while doing domestics or gardening)

It works better if I wear my glasses.
I can see what I am doing!

Chanel Rouge Coco Orchidee Lipstick
(a rosy red)

Jennifer mentions that a bold lip takes centre stage and the eyes almost disappear.
One must choose to focus on either the eyes or the lips when choosing make up.
Which one do you prefer to highlight?

Maybelline  #055 Pink~a~licious

Maybelline  #547  Pleasure Me Red
(purchased in Paris)

I wear this shade for evening or when I want to capture and remember a bit of Paris.
I think red lips are quintessentially French!

Janet over at The Gardener's Cottage wears Poppy by Aveda.
She's written a post on beauty and I think you might like to pop over and read what she has to say.
I enjoy her blog so much.
(and I am in love with her gorgeous house)
Country Living magazine did a shoot at her cottage and are going to be featuring it soon.
I can hardly wait!

Do you have a favourite shade of lipstick?

Hope that you have some fun scheduled this weekend.
I'll be focusing on watering our newly sodded back lawn.
I'll share it with you sometime soon.

Cheerio
XO

A makeup artist once told me that the correct shade of lipstick is the one that makes your eye color "pop. I tend to do best with shades in soft coral range. Can't do a "nude" lip at all...I look like a corpse! I really like the "Orchidee" on you!

I vote for the Orchidee on you as well. I'm still searching for my perfect red.

i love the deep red on you. because we lose pigment in our skin as we age the red really brings life to our faces. i don't think you can go wrong with a pretty red. you look gorgeous as always and thanks for the mention. xo

You are always so cute and adorable in your photos Hostess. I think you look great in all of these shades. I mostly wear Bobbie Brown's color called Brownie. It is fairly close to a natural lip color.

I like the Orchidee and the Pink a licious best on you - just enough and not too much (color). Love your hair and glasses. I tend to either wear lip balm without any color or a lipstick that is very close, but just a little deeper than my natural lip color.

I love you in all of them but I think your Paris purchase is my favorite!

I too like the top two best. The Pink-a-licous is really flirty and fresh. For many of us, our lips thin (well at least •something• does!) as we age, and intense red emphasizes that. A few women keep fuller lips and a few buy them!

But for most of us, the rosier/pinker spectrum is most lush-looking, especially in full daylight.

I like the Maybelline #055 on you the best, but it might also depend on what you are wearing. I recently received a free sample of a Nars, Cruella lip pencil which I like and would be good especially for the winter months. Normally I wear something a bit softer in color.

I like the Parisian lipstick the best. I've worn the same Black Cherry lipstick for years. I keep trying new ones, but always return to the time-tested one.

I like that first red on you best, though they all look great . My new fav is rosalita by clinique . It gives me just enough color , I don't wear eye makeup as I find it too irritating as I,ve aged. I am on the lookout for a good eye brow pencil if you have any recommendations -one that is natural

It depends on the outfit and where you're going, I like the Pleasure Me Red and the Orchidee. I love your glasses.

I like them all, but the Orchidee the most. I could see you in a deep raspberry color as well. Makes blue eyes pop.

Pretty lipsticks! And I love your hair. I think that a little soft eyeliner on the top lid wouldn't be too much, and would balance the bright lip. A tiny bit of black eyeliner makes a huge difference in lifting the lid.

Orchidée is my favourite. Your hair is looking very pretty as it grows. I'm packing my Monoprix t-shirts to go to NYC. It is always fun to have a "little Paris" in one's life!

Real red is very becoming for you; and balancing the dark framed glasses. When feeling shy of "real red", try it in sheer. The dark frames work as an eye-liner. Very pretty hair-do!
For camouflage of red patches try Shiseido green make up stick (Avene & La Roche Posay have something similar)

Thank you Sue.
You are fair and blonde so nude would be too light...I think you've got your make up down to a fine art!

Happy hunting...I went to the Chanel counter and they tried many different shades on me and Orchidee was the winner. You might try going to a cosmetics counter where you can get some expert advice...the cosmeticians are trained to help and you do not need to purchase the products.

I just realized that I forgot to put a link to your post...I have fixed that Janet. You are sweet !

I like Bobbi Brown products...when you find a shade that works for you it's wonderful....thank you for your comment!

My hair is in the growing out stage so that's good to know it's not too "out there!"
Dior make a lovely rose lip balm have you tried it?

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Thank you Linda! I wore it today as I was wearing my white Paris linen tee and felt I needed a bit more colour.

My lips definitely have thinned...
Perhaps that is why the companies are making plumping lip products.
Do you remember Goldie Hawn's lips in The First Wives Club?

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Oh free samples! Now where do you get those these days?

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

That's a classic shade...Clinique makes one don't they?

I wear mineral make up powdered eye shadow and I often will line my lips with a Revlon eye liner...I am not an expert on make up by any means. I often wear Stila Stay all Day Brow Gel...I have my brows tinted and use a brush to keep them shaped.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Thank you Polly...you're right, lips can be darker and more intense for evening.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I will consider that shade Kathy...I know that you have a trained "eye!"

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

I frequently line my upper lash line with a thin dark brown liner...not usually for everyday though. I hopped over to read your blog but see that you are a private blogger.

The sun burn in fading fast...interesting idea about the glasses acting as eye liner!
I never considered that before.
Thank you!

Some people can wear strong lip and strong eye makeup at the same time and look normal. Some can do one or the other but not both. Yet others seem very made up with just a bit of makeup. It varies. For vivid examples of the variations, check out 12blueprints.com and lisaeldridge.com. Our skin, hair, and eyes interplay on so many levels, I no longer believe in blanket statements where appearance is concerned.

Generally spoken dark haired (and former dark haired) women can wear darker colours on their lips ; even if they are Grey or White haired now. If lips thinned a bit, try a Booster (Dior offers one) or a sheer Version of your favorite colour. Dark eye make up should be balanced by a lighter lipstick, bare eyes by stronger lipstick colours. But dark eye make up should be softened with Age and light lipstick should be not to light. And for (almost) everyone: Rouge and blush are your friends!

I'm an eyes person. I use a lip liner to sharpen the outline of my mouth and a colourless lip balm to moisturise but don't wear lipstick. But I've been thinking of buying a light, bright pink, rather like the Orchidee, for some while and shall now act on your suggestion and go to a makeup counter for advice. I think you look lovely in both Orchidee and Pink-a-licious (and your hair is looking great.).

From Margie in Toronto - I wear Chanel's Rouge Coco #19 - Gabrielle - it's become my favourite over the past couple of years - used to be MAC's "Russian Red" but the formula was a bit too dry for me.
I'm always trying to find the perfect pink but never seem to find it. I will be looking for a deep plum/burgundy/mauve tone as a change from the red for this winter - heading back to the Chanel counter sometime this week to see what they have.

From Margie in Toronto - sorry - hit the button too quickly - meant to add that I like the Orchidee best on you - it's lovely.

The Orchidee is fabulous on you! It's balanced beautifully with your dark frames so we see your pretty eyes too!! Thanks for the mention!

Thanks Jennifer! Hope you didn't mind me posting on your idea...it was very inspiring!
