September ~ Mid month musings...

Sunny Yellow Dahlias are putting on a bright and bold showing.
We've planted these in a vintage garden wheelbarrow and parked it out front.
The flowers are continuously blooming...
I suspect they will be around for another month.

I've picked a few on occasion,
I like to leave most of them on the plant for maximum effect!

There are so many beautiful and different varieties of Dahlias.
I think I need to find a few more varieties for the Humble Bungalow Garden.

Mom used to grow Dahlias.
Some she called "dinner plate dahlias"
they were the size of a dinner plate...
with spiky petals.

Mom had a bed dedicated just for growing Dahlias...about 6 foot X 20 feet.
A rainbow of colours and a variety of forms...
She would pick bunches and bring them inside our home,
scattering them in most every room...including the bathroom.
I think she used ALL her vases for these displays.

Recently I had a very lucky day at the thrift shops...
I drove out to Brentwood Bay and Sidney and had a good look.

Circe is a book that I have been meaning to read for many years.
Vintage Linen napkins X 4
Glass Flower Frog
Silver Sugar Bowl that matches my Harrods Teapot and Creamer!
The sugar bowl has been on my radar for several years...
this one has a monogram, unfortunately not our initials.
(I figure it just adds to the charm.)

Do you like to go thrifting?
What is your favourite thrift shop find?

The simple silver tea set...
2 thrifted tea strainers...one is sterling, the other is silver plate.

~ Vintage Royal Albert Canterbury China ~

This pattern is for afternoon Teas...
I have some side plates and a couple of cake plates.
Fortunately I found most of these pieces locally in thrift and consignment shops.

This is one of the Birks gold earrings that my husband gave me 45 years ago...
they were a grand gesture gift for Christmas when I was a stay at home mom.
Two babies and we were scraping by
with not a lot of cash leftover from our expenses...
when to my surprise and delight my husband gave them to me.

A few days ago one fell into the toilet
as it was flushing and I couldn't grab it in time.
The sadness that followed was profound...there were tears.
I have worn these throughout the years and I felt they were priceless.
Sentimentally I felt like I had lost something really BIG.

After a couple of days, and encouragement from our daughter and my husband...
I went to a local shop Old N Gold and found another pair.

Slightly bigger and the gold on these is twisted...
(Italian earrings)
I traded in the solo earring and walked out of the shop wearing this new pair.
As someone on Instagram said...it's a new chapter.

Have you ever lost a piece of jewellry that meant a lot?
Did you replace the item?

After Yoga I popped into Adventure Clothing on Oak Bay Avenue...
I saw a cute pair of jeans that are wider and cropped.
They were on display with a shirt from the Cornish brand Seasalt.

I tried them on and really liked the fit...
they are by the company French Dressing.

The printed Seasalt Shirt was really pretty but I don't usually wear prints.
Stripes yes, but prints...not so much.

Do they look like Sailor pants?
Pedal Pushers?

Well I LOVE them whatever they are called...

I've been having fun styling them with items that I already have in my wardrobe...
for example:
white linen top and jacket
white Tee and blue and white striped Ralph Lauren oversized shirt
Long sleeve white top with a hand knit Miriam sweater in a teal blue shade.

I am thinking I need some red cowboy boots to wear with these this Fall!

Our dwarf apple trees are full this year and we have a grand harvest...
Chehalis apples (above) are green and slightly tart.

Liberty are a bit sweeter...
Both are great eating apples.
I also use them for pies and crisps.

Do you have fruit trees?

I picked some hydrangeas in hopes to dry them...
these are different from the Limelight and Annabelle hydrangeas.
We have two plants and one is rose coloured, the other is blue.
They grow side by side and I wonder if the soils PH is different?

My mom used to say that hydrangeas can change their colour
 simply by adding copper pennies...
I am not sure if this is true or an "old wives tale?"

Do you know if it works?
Have you tried to change the colour of your hydrangeas?

Well that's about all the chit chat news I can think of sharing right now...
hope that your September is off to a great start.
Autumn will be here before we know it in our part of the world.

(Some of you are just heading into Spring!)

Take care and thank you for taking the time to stop by and read my blog..

You've had a lovely start to September. I am so happy you managed to find a replacement pair of earrings. I somehow missed that on Instagram. As for dahlias - do you pull them up each fall? My father-in-law grew dinner plate sized ones and he stressed the importance of storing the bulbs through winter. I'm curious if you do.

My husband does pull up the tubers and stores them over the winter...my mom never did that and she had a glorious showing of her Dahlias. Mom's Dahlia bed was in between our house and the neighbours home...it was quite protected almost like an English Walled Garden so that might make it easier to overwinter the tubers in the soil...I am pleased that I can still wear gold hoops...I have a small collection of earrings...6 or 7 pairs and I wear the hoops and pearl studs with my diamonds most days...( I have 2 piercings in each ear)

I've tried Dahlias. The slugs in our very wet garden loved them!! Even in pots they never seem to grow the second year. Good idea to trade in the one earring - gold is so high now. I don't lose or break much, but I do get upset when I do.

I had a similar experience when I had just separated from my first husband. I no longer wore my wedding ring but I still wore a friendship ring that he had given me. I had lost weight and the ring slipped off into the toilet. Prophetic? We are still friendly. I really enjoyed Circe. I’m reading a Cara Black mystery right now before I meet Daughter in Paris.

Thank you for sharing your lovely garden! Garden chats are always enjoyable!
Your flowers are beautiful and your apples are amazing! How do you get such healthy looking fruit?
You asked about changing the colour of hydrangeas and my understanding is that not all hydrangea varieties are able to be either blue or pink. Big leaf (macrophylla) is one such variety, but annabelles and limelights are not.
I love the idea of drying hydrangea blooms ... so easy too! Just pop them in the vase you want them in, no water needed.

Oh those darn slugs...I have heard they like beer and will dive into a dish near a plant that has beer in it...I would hope that they would be deliriously happy as they pass away :-))

Oh losing things is so frustrating...and even more so when they have sentimental value. Enjoy your time in Paris!!!

I suppose the fruit looks healthy because we fertilize and water the trees...I find that hydrangea drying is hit and miss...many krinkle up and look awful...I bought some alum as that was recommended to me to dip the stems in and then pop them in a bit of water....we'll see if that helps. Fingers crossed.

Dahlias are beautiful both in the garden and in vases! Love the small ball variety

Yes, a cross necklace my children gave me went missing. That crushed me but a few years later they presented me with another one and I guard it for dear life!!

A lovely newsy post, Leslie. I feel for you losing your earring that held so much sentimental value. Dahlias do well in our garden, but I moved some in the spring and lost a few of my favourites. I plan to replace them next season - for now all I have are yellow and white ones and I do love the pinks and burgundies.
Apples are in abundance here, too, and I'm giving them away when I can. We have a Liberty and an Akane. Apple crisps, apple galettes, and lots of apples in storage for the winter in a second fridge.
What fun to style something new for the season, like your jeans. I'm feeling a little stuck style-wise.

First off - I love that small flower print shirt on you with those jeans. I don't wear many prints either, but somehow that works so well with that style of jean. That shirt makes me smile. I love dahlias and I'm installing 3 raised garden beds this week and one will be dedicated to dahlias. I'm so sorry about your earrings - losing sentimental jewelry is so hard, but your new hoops are beautiful too. X

Oh, I feel for you! I know that sinking feeling. My husband gave me small gold hoops for Christmas the first year we were married, in 1977. JUST the kind I wanted...a continuous loop. I wore them for years and about 15 years ago, during a big snow storm when we were clearing our driveway one of them must have caught on my ski cap - because when I went to take them off...one was gone. I was so sad. In the Spring of that year, as I was planting flowers and rooting in the mulch at the end of the driveway...there it was! I was thrilled. Two years later after taking down the Christmas tree - again. One was missing. A few days later when giving the house a thorough clean I moved the are rug and there it was - again. Bliss. Have not lost them since...one did break but the jeweler repaired it. I cherish them...and hope they last a long time. I am so happy you got another, similar pair. And you can smile at the memory of the gift that you treasured!

Those yellow dahlias are beautiful. We are back to summer like temperatures here in southern Ontario, so we are savouring the days enjoying our coffee on the back deck. Sorry to hear about losing your earring, but happy you were able to find some lovely new ones.

I've lost many earrings! I'm glad you were able to replace your old paid. Old & Gold is great!

Your earring story reminded me of the time I lost my wedding ring while cleaning. I was heartbroken. The winter came and went and in the spring the little girl downstairs found it in the driveway buried in the snow. Apparently my two year old boy had picked it up and dropped it out of the window that I had opened slightly to bring in fresh air. The little girl did not want to give it back. Finders- keepers!

I would love to see your fun jeans with a slightly cropped linen shirt that I have. I went all out with linen this summer with no regrets. Have a lovely day, Leslie.

Thank YOU for continuing to write your blog. It is always varied and enjoyable. While I wear almost no jewelry and have not lost a treasured piece, I sure can feel your dismay / grief over losing that treasured earring. You have certainly been well encouraged to move forward with something else. Well done both husband and daughter. Your flowers are always so lovely.

I love that Dahlia varieties are so different...they feel like happy flowers to me.

How wonderful that your family were able to find another cross pendant for you! Losing treasured pieces of jewellry is definitely a sad experience...

I just made a big pot of applesauce and roasted some of our tomatoes...a second fridge for fruit sounds like a very handy thing to have in your home. I can highly recommend Adventure Clothing on Oak Bay Avenue...pop in and peruse their items you will be pleasantly surprised by the clothes that they carry.

The Seasalt Cornish brand has so many cute shirts and tops...they are a very "happy" print with very interesting and bright bold colours. Hope you have fun choosing the varieties of dahlias...I am excited to grow more here next year. I have been wearing the new hops a LOT! They are Italian Gold and a bit larger so they are more noticeable which I like :-))

Such a fortuitous event finding that hoop after the snow melted !! Am very pleased with these replacement hoops...have been wearing them everyday.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

It is warme here in Victoria too...nit super hot but pleasantly warm for outdoor walks and gardening. I am pleased wity the new hoops and have been wearing them each day since I purchased them.

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Oh gosh I was quite overwhelmed with the stock at Old N Gold!! So many beautiful things that I felt like a kid in a candy store...they had 5 racks of gold hoops and I looked at them ALL before deciding on the ones I bought!

hostess of the humble bungalow said...

Oh a wedding ring would have a LOT of sentimental value....that would be devastating...your son sounds a bit like my uncle...he flushed my gran's ring down the toilet...her husband my Grandfather dug up the pipes in the front yard and got it back...then my uncle did it again and they just had to let it go!!! I love linen...it's my go to fabric for summer!!!

Thank you Jeannine...you are a long time reader and I appreciate you popping back when I publish a new post :-))
