Elopement flowers...

By the time you read this post
our darling daughter and her fiancee will be married...

Married!

Such a joyous occasion to stand before each other
in a beautiful setting by the sea
to pledge their love and future years together
as husband and wife.

The Humble Bungalow Kitchen
looks like a flower shop.

Hey Jude!
Thank you for your timely blooms...
I was worried that this stellar David Austin rose "Jude the Obscure" would have finished flowering
as it has been going steady since early May.
We also ordered flowers from our favourite shop Thorn and Thistle Flowers
so there are going to be two bouquets.
One for the actual ceremony and one for the photos.

~ a simple garden bouquet for the bride ~

~ a boutonniere for the groom ~

The Humble Bungalow Kitchen
was in need of tidying by the time I had finished arranging all the flowers.

Putting together floral arrangements and bouquets over the years
for special events and parties has been fun.
Flowers play such a big part in my life.
Growing them in the garden and arranging them in vases and posies
has been a rewarding and creative endeavour.

Flowers add such beauty and ambiance to a home.
I cannot imagine life without flowers...

The wee library on our street is a great source of books
the neighbours read quite a lot and they drop off and exchange novels
with great regularity.
"Sisters" by Claire Douglas sounds like a good read...

It will need to wait until after
I finish Elin Hilderbrand's novel "The Island"
which I am enjoying immensely...

This morning I whipped around the house and got all my chores done then I took myself out for a long walk to get some fresh air and exercise.
The sights and sounds were just what I needed.
While I was walking I got several texts and photos from darling daughter taken at the service.
The weather co-operated with oodles of blue sky and loads of sunshine
Such a beautiful day for their ceremony.

Next time I see our darling daughter she will be married!

Weekend wrapped up... back in the Humble Bungalow.

After a particularly hectic week Mr. HB and I stole away on our boat and tied up at the dock at Otter Bay Marina on Pender Island.
We were in dire need of some "down time" and find that boating is the perfect remedy for what ails us...
Otter Bay is well maintained and features two pools, cottage rentals, a small store and a cafe. You can rent, kayaks, paddle boards, and scooters...if you want to do more than just relax!

Canada Day was spent relaxing, reading, swimming and knitting.
Later in the day the Pender Island Pipe and Drum Band marched down the dock, bagpipers in kilts and full regalia.
Despite the heat they put on quite the show.
You can watch a video of a portion of the performance on my Instagram page.

The rocky shoreline had some interesting details...

Pretty flowers in planters along the docks brightened up the Marina.

Drought tolerant plants were chosen as the Gulf Islands have a limited water supply...we all need to be mindful of our water usage as there are drought conditions all over the province of BC and in many of the US states.

Both Mr. HB and I sleep better on our boat.
It could be the fresh air
or that our bunk is super cozy
and
there is that gentle rocking motion of the boat as it bobs upon the ocean
which swiftly lulls us into dreamland...

The laundry is on...thankfully the LG machines are doing all the dirty work which frees me up to type a blog post while dinner is simmering on the stove.

Tomato Sauce for Spaghetti

Fresh basil from the greenhouse...garlic clove chopped.

Simmering and it smells so wonderful.

 ~ Tomato Sauce ~

Heat 2 tbsp. olive oil
add
2 1/2 pounds chopped tomatoes
1 diced onion
cook until softened.

Add in rest of ingredients:

small can of tomato paste
(fill the can with water and pour in)

1/2 tsp. dried red pepper flakes
1/2 tsp. sugar
2 tbsp. minced fresh basil
1/2 small carrot grated
1/2 tsp. dried thyme
1/2 tsp. dried oregano
1 clove garlic chopped fine
salt and pepper to taste

Simmer for 45 minutes.
Boil pasta and cook until al dente and serve with a salad.

Family, food, flowers, and a funeral...

It is a busy busy week here in The Humble Bungalow...
lots happening and I took a few moments to put this post together.

We have a guest staying with us this week, the focus has been on food, flowers and a funeral...an elderly relative's life will be celebrated.

I apologize that I have not had time to respond to all your comments and my blog reading has taken a back seat to my real life.

Oh and while all this is going on we have the painters here tarting up this old bungalow.

Peony seen on my walk in our neighbourhood.

Fuchsia blooms on Oak Bay Avenue glimpsed while running errands.

Beautiful Blue Hydrangea flowers
in a yard on a street near Our Humble Bungalow.

We took our daughter and her fiancee out to dinner at our favourite Italian bistro Zambri's last week and gave them their wedding gifts.

Caesar Salad

Tenderloin and polenta with a gorgonzola sauce.

Gifts for the soon to be newlyweds!

This novel has captured my attention,  it was on the shelf in the wee library across the street.
I have been able to sneak in a few chapters and find this book hard to put down...

We took a ride out to the boat on the weekend and I sat and sipped sparking water and knit a few rows...

My knitting is slow going since I had my frozen shoulder.
I am able to knit for short periods each day and with any luck the poncho will be finished by the time Fall arrives!

~ Peek a Boo ~
Our grandson Henry came over for a few hours of fun and play.
Grammy was happy!

Today
Birthday dinner preparations are underway
and the guests will arrive later.
All the food is organized and the Lemon Charlotte cake is in the fridge.
I need to set the table and put together a few things but they will not take too long...

This bee was busy working in the Poppy when I looked closely...
and it is time for me to get back to work.

Thank you for stopping by The Humble Bungalow Blog.

Weekend Dinner Party and a Yummy Salad Recipe

Our daughter is going to be wed to her Kiwi fiancee this summer in an intimate ceremony on one of the beautiful Gulf Islands just off our coast.
We were introduced to our future SIL's father and step mom on the weekend and we celebrated by hosting a casual dinner here in The Humble Bungalow.
The Marlborough area in New Zealand is where they reside and they own and run an award winning olive grove and make olive oil...they gave us a bottle and I cannot wait to try it!
Marlborough is well known and famous for their vineyards and top notch wines so we wanted to introduce them to some of our BC wine and local seafood.

We served a very simple dinner and we sipped a Sandhill Pinot Gris from a BC Winery in Oliver.

We were celebrating our future SIL's birthday and getting acquainted with his father and step mom. The conversations were animated and we really got on well.
Such lovely people, warm and friendly, it feels as though we have been friends for a long time.

Dinner menu:

Cheese and olive platter with candied smoked wild salmon for the appetizers
Salad
Baby new potatoes with butter and chopped fresh mint
Salmon glazed with soy sauce and drizzled with maple syrup
Chocolate mousse with raspberries

I tried a new salad which was colourful and full of flavour.
Here is the recipe...
I have not indicated quantities because it is so easy to adapt the amounts to make more or less depending on how many you are serving.

Yummy Salad

A variety of salad greens and I added radicchio for colour
cooked beets (I used baby beets and quartered them after cooking)
radishes sliced
roasted pumpkin seeds
sliced green onions
goat or feta cheese crumbled

Put all these gorgeous ingredients in a large salad bowl.
(I used a shallow white bowl to show the rich colours of this salad)

Dressing

1/4 cup wine vinegar
1/4 cup honey
1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon of fresh dill or 2 tsp. dried dill weed
salt and pepper
1/2 cup olive oil

Put all the ingredients in a large jar and shake until emulsified and dress salad just before serving.

I ate the leftovers today (a wee bit soggy but yummy!)

I am half way through this book and am having difficulty putting it down.
It is well written and very interesting...and yes it is on my Paris themed reading list!
(I have it on good authority that Tilar Mazzeo is residing in Victoria for several months of each year)

Well I must get a move on and tackle some of the domestics around here...
no more excuses!
After I have finished them I am going to pop the kettle on and sit for a bit and read my book!

Lilacs ~ an unexpected "windfall"

Thank you all for your kind messages on the previous post...

Yesterday we gathered at the church for a memorial Mass
to honour a lovely, gracious and kind woman...
the mother of my closest and dearest friend.
I have known this amazing lady since I was 8 years old.

Many years of wonderful memories ~ she will never be forgotten.

The vintage white floral wicker baskets were purchased from an antique shop almost 10 years ago.
Our son was getting married and having a garden wedding at my friend's home and I was in charge of the flowers and when I spied these I knew they would be perfect.
These have been used for several other weddings and they were used yesterday at the church service.
I offered to help with the flowers because it is something that I really enjoy...

I picked flowers from our Humble Bungalow garden...
lily of the valley, pink roses, fern fronds, hosta leaves and some blue bells popped them in a bucket and drove to my friend's home.
These went into vases and were placed around the house in various rooms.

The lily of the valley was placed on the table at the church between pictures, her rosary and some personal mementos
We used the crystal vase that she had given me at my wedding shower almost 42 years ago.

My friend and I wandered around their garden looking for flowers for the wicker urns and discovered that a limb had snapped off the lilac bush in the wind that blew up the night before.
So we wasted no time and started cutting them, then plunged the fragrant lilacs into cold water.

They looked lovely at the church and were taken back to the house for the reception.
The private memorial Mass and afternoon gathering was mostly family...
we felt honoured to be included.

Here are a couple of pictures of their gorgeous garden
which is large, lush and incredibly beautiful.

Purple Potato Vine looks so pretty mixed in with the chartreuse green Euphorbia.

Wisteria by the front entrance.

Dogwood Tree

Yellow Rose

I love how pretty this yellow rose looks contrasted against the red door.

I had a fairly quiet day today...
I met with the orthopedic surgeon who is treating my frozen shoulder and she seemed pleased with my progress...she is the first female orthopedic surgeon in Victoria...
looks very young and has a lovely "bedside manner."

I indulged in a relaxing pedicure at my favourite place
 Bliss Spa...

Sipping and savouring a cup of hot tea
and looking at the clock
it is almost time to get dinner started...

Thank you for stopping by.

Pretty Garden Pinks, a road trip and a picnic...and it is only Wednesday!

Oh the weather these past few days has been so hot!

Darling daughter celebrated her birthday on Monday.

Here she is on one of her first walks.
In 1979 we lived on Marlborough Street by Beacon Hill Park which is just off Dallas Road
in a big old rambling house which still stands today.

I love this picture of the two of us
with the snow capped Olympic Mountains in the background.
So much time has elapsed...
Our daughter has grown into a lovely woman and she will be tying the knot with her Kiwi fiancee this summer.

Darling daughter and I drove up island for the day...
poking our noses into
antique shops and a couple of thrift stores.

This is the view from the Bridgeman's Bistro at The Mill Bay Marina.
The water was so calm...
just like a "mill pond" which by the way is not usual for "Mill Bay!"

The crab cakes were delicious!

We came home with a few bit and bobs...but no "big" treasures.
It is aways fun spending time together.

I wore my bangles...
she says it makes me easy to find in a shop...she just listens for the sounds of the bracelets jingling!

The lilacs are blooming and it is not even May!

I have had to venture downstairs to my "out of season" closet
to find some summer garments to wear in this heat...

It is "slim pickins" down there too....not much more than a couple of dresses, a few Tees and a couple of pairs of pants. I must have done a major cull last season when I put the summer stuff into storage.

Thank goodness I had the peace of mind to keep my Italian black linen dress...
it is loose and very cool..perfect for this weather.

Last year I noticed that In the south of France loose linen dresses seem to be the preferred choice of women of a certain age...so I promptly went out a bought one when I came back from my trip...a very sensible choice too and one that makes sense as the fabric breathes in the heat.

I love to wander around in the garden in the morning before it gets too hot... to see if there are any major weeds that need pulling and to see what is in bloom.

The roses are starting to bloom...this Pavement series rose has an intoxicating scent...
unfortunately it bears lots of thorns which make it hard to pick.

These sweet little "money plant" volunteers have seeded themselves in the front beds.

This area is "under construction"
Our clematis is very old and woody but is a stalwart when it comes to putting on a spectacular show.

This picture was taken before the clematis came into bloom.
We planted variegated iris, several hostas and black mondo grass in this shady bed.

The patio was redone by our garden gals.

The clematis has twined itself high up into the neighbours Dogwood tree.

Close up of a rhododendron...like a jewel box inside.

I bought a few geraniums to put on the front porch.
They are a great value
 inexpensive
will last all summer
look so cheerful.

My sister and I took Mother to the beach for tea and a late afternoon snack yesterday.
Inside this basket I keep 3 pretty china cups and saucers, 3 matching side plates, assorted silver wear.
Picnic ready
with a tablecloth, napkins when the sun shines on Willows Beach.

I've got some more posts on the back burner so I will be back soon.

Thank you for your kind and thoughtful emails after the recent shenanigans...
I did not think that the post would have generate so much discord among readers...
if I have personally offended any of you,
I humbly apologize.
