Clothes Shopping has become a problem....

"You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince..."
                      ~  The Frog Prince ~
                                        by Brothers Grimm ~

That is how I feel about clothes shopping...

It may be due to my mid life figure,
my current budget,
my colour preferences,
my age,
my personal taste
or that I have the basics currently hanging in my closet.

I can stroll through a store and easily dismiss about 95% of the items.

So when I spend an hour perusing the store and end up with only 5 or 6 things to try on that may or may not work, that is a considerable amount of time and effort.
Am I being too picky?
Am I looking for a needle in the haystack...that hidden gem?

Clark boots

(Excuse the hair - weather was so icy that I had to wear a hat.)
I resorted to do my walking in the mall for several hours.
The blue Calvin Klein puffy vest on the hook in the change room is mine.

I like this swing shape of this top (above) as it camouflages all manner of sins.
I bought this blue top when I was in Vancouver last year.

Here is a
Calvin Klein soft soft sweatshirt...
not loving the overall look
BUT
oh how I LOVED the feel of it...

almost like sleepwear
and
I could wear this around the house.

Do I want to spend $60 on it just to wear it at home?
No I don't think so...

Skinny striped swing top
Style and Co.
cozy
reasonably priced
($25)
(covers the hips)
can be worn with skinny jeans, leggings or pants.

I didn't take pictures of the other tops as they were total rubbish on me.

You can see here how height challenged I am at 5'1
in clothing terms that makes me a "petite."
Not skinny though...

Let me be honest I'd like to lose 10 pounds.
So its working out with the kettle bells, walking,
and
monitoring what I eat and drink.

At my age, almost 62,  results take longer and I need to work harder so
it might be a few weeks away before I see significant results.

Drove to Willows Beach after the ice melted and walked along the Esplanade.
The fresh air cleared out the cobwebs and I felt energized.
Later I stopped for a skim milk latte.
A low WW point indulgence.

I will often take myself out for a coffee.
I don't mind being alone at a table in the coffee shop.
Years ago this would have felt very uncomfortable.
  but now
perhaps because I am older
or that I spent time in Paris alone at the street cafes
I feel relaxed and I am able to just be calm and enjoy the experience.

Back to shopping...
wish that there were more petite shops in our town.
I do not like online shopping very much.
It costs so much to send back garments that do not fit
and one does not get to feel the fabrics or try on more than one size.

Oh and while I am wishing,
how about some petite shops that cater to women of a certain age?
Travelling to Vancouver or Seattle to buy petite garments is expensive!

Are you a petite or tall woman?
Are you "average?"
Where do you like to shop?

What do you think about sourcing clothes for us over 60 gals?

Do you have a seamstress or do you sew clothes for yourself?
Do you find it frustrating to find things that fit and flatter?

Please chime in on this discussion
I would love to hear from you on this topic.

New Year walking and weight loss...

We opted for a stay at home dinner this past New Years Eve.

Bubbly, bread and butter...

 Caesar Salad

Alaska King Crab Legs

A rather festive menu and the last meal of the year...
time to get back on track and whittle away some pounds.

Come rain or come shine I will be walking.
No more excuses.

Walking is so much nicer when the sun shines
but we cannot expect sunny days at this time of year.

Walking is convenient and free...
no scheduled time constraints
no gym fees
no special equipment.

Weight loss is my motivation and fresh air the benefit.

Sometimes I need "a carrot" to get me out the door...
once I am out and about I am fine,
the challenge is prying myself away from a book, my knitting or the Internet!

Walking while
running an errand
posting a letter
visiting Mother
buying coffee
getting a few groceries.

How are you doing with your fitness routine?

Do you have a membership at the gym?
Do you like to do Yoga, swim, bike or run on a treadmill?

I like to use the scale as my motivator and when I see results I reward myself with non food treats...

Flowers
a new lip gloss
fancy tea
nail polish
a thrift shop find

Staying committed is tough and we all need to keep our focus on our long term goals.

I wish it was easier and faster to get to these goals and that we can take heart by  indulging more often in things that do not derail our progress.

If you find it daunting
start small and see how it goes...
20 minutes a day and then work up to 45 or 60 minutes
you'll be pleased to see the results.
If you feel better walking with a partner see if you can find a friend who wants to walk...
or
join a walking group.
GOOD LUCK!

Cheerio readers,
I'm off for my walk now...

Snow Day...

We enjoyed a dinner out with friends this week,
on the drive home we marvelled at the large orange moon hanging low in the sky
it looked like it was suspended just above the houses
and the reflection on the ocean was just so beautiful...

Not quite the image that I was hoping for...
it was difficult to capture the detail with my IPhone.

I cannot believe it but we have more snow...
we awoke yesterday to a light dusting and it continued to fall all morning.

This was the view on my walk the other day and I thought for sure that we would be enjoying warmer temperatures.

I noticed that there were a few late forming rose buds...
they must be frozen and ready to drop by now.

A study in black and white
Black Mondo grass poking out of the snow.

I decided that some comfort food was needed so I made a chicken pot pie.

The Food network had Ina Gartens' recipe.

Fresh and hot from the oven.
Can you see the snow outside?

Mr. HB put up a string of white lights on the Climbing Royal Sunset rose.
They look so pretty at night
I can see them when I am working in the Humble Bungalow Kitchen.

reminds me of a string of lustrous pearls

We went to an open house and a birthday party last night,
held in a heritage home of a young family.
There was quite a crowd and I think that the children outnumbered the adults.

This black cat clock hangs in the kitchen and the eyes move from side to side.
The young children are quite taken with it...as are many of the adults who have memories of these vintage clocks.

I've woken up with a stuffy nose and a scratchy throat and I am hoping that it does not turn into a cold. Today I plan to lay low, drink lots of fluids and keep warm.

Fortunately
I have a great book

The Midwife of Hope River
by Patricia Harman
I am halfway through and enjoying it immensely.

Have you had a good weekend?
What's new?
Are you busy with all the Christmas preparations?

What's happening here in the Humble Bungalow...saying thank you to Jamie Cat Callan

Cold weather has been hanging around here in Victoria for the past few weeks with no signs of warming up. Our zero and minus 4 degree days make for a chilly outing if one is not adequately dressed. This morning, for example, Victorians living on the west shore awoke to a burst water main that closed the Trans Canada Highway into town! The traffic was snarled for hours and now only one lane is open.

Hat, gloves, scarf, warm down coat over top of layers of tops and socks have been necessary when venturing out of the house...
imagine the "Michelin Man" puffy coat
worn with a woolly hat that covers my ears,
a scarf
with just my eyes peeking out
and you get the picture...
BRRR
the usual 60 minute walks are just not happening.
(I may need to resort to mall walking!)

I finally broke down and purchased a heavier pair of tights so that I could wear my skirts and dresses with my Chelsea boots.
I have not worn heavy tights since I retired from the school district and I was surprised when I looked for some...the prices are much higher than I remember.
As part of my job I was required to do outdoor supervision at recess and lunch and because I feel the cold I dressed like I was going to the North Pole...
Comfort wins.

OOTD...

It is a wee bit of a risk posting a picture
I am such rubbish at taking selfies.

 BTW
still patiently waiting for my hair to turn completely grey...
in the meantime I have embraced grey clothing with a pop of colour.
This is what I think of now as
 "Grammy Style"
plus
I love knitting, cooking and taking care of the wee ones...
officially and unabashedly grandmotherly!

Sitting in The Humble Bungalow Living Room
gazing into the twinkle lights
sipping a cafe creme
is where I start my day.

Currently reading The Midwife of Hope River by Patricia Harman
I loved her other novels.
Patricia is a very gifted writer..
she has a new one coming out in January
"Runaway Midwife"
already reserved at the library.

I have read oodles and oodles of books over the years
and I have so much respect for writers
and
their discipline to their craft.

I regularly consider, and wonder, if I could ever write a book.

Recently on Facebook
hosted a writing contest
the winner would receive
a copy of her
 "Writer's Tool Box"

Thank you Jamie
(I was fortunate in winning one of her Tool Kits)

After reading all of Jamie's books
I met her on her Ooh La La tour in Paris...
Jamie is energetic
enthusiastic
loves life
is fun to be around
she is
  a totally delightful woman
her
"joie de vivre" is positively contagious.

Jamie is currently working on a new book...
which I am so looking forward to reading it when it comes out next year.

Chester demands my attention when I sit...
often he pushes my book away before settling into my lap for a cuddle.

Sitting in the peace and quiet
dreams are formed

hopes

wishes

destinations farther than my front garden

a leap of faith

who knows what the future will bring?

Thank you Jamie
You continue to inspire me everyday.
I will always remember my trip to Paris.

If it were not for Jamie
I am not sure that I would have ever realized my dream.

So many thoughts bubble up
so many of those feelings that lay dormant
before I embarked on that amazing trans formative journey.

In gratitude...

Happy Holidays and Seasons Greetings!

Waking in Sunshine...but not for long!

I awoke surprised to see the sunshine pouring in through the blinds last weekend.
The other surprise was the time...
9AM!
Sleeping in is so rare these days that when I realize that I have slept in
it comes as a SHOCK!

My morning luxury is to brew an espresso and serve it in a bowl with foamed milk.
This habit started in Paris and I have never looked back.
For me this starts my day off on a positive note.
I take a few minutes to check out Instagram, Facebook and read blogs.

After my shower I dress in my walking clothes...
this helps me stay motivated to go for my walk.

If I dress up in "going out" clothes right away
I can find a million excuses NOT to go for a walk!

black yoga pants
a long top
puffy vest or puffy jacket
(choice is dependent on the forecast)
sock and athletic shoes

 I took an alternate route
and ventured into the Ross Bay Cemetery.
It is very beautiful, peaceful, and full of all kinds of wildlife...
birds, squirrels, deer.

Heritage Trees form a canopy over the lanes.

The seafront is just beyond the edge of the grass...
you can see the seawall and ocean if you look closely.

Spectacular Autumn colours

Inside a crevice in a tree
I spy fungi...

Not sure what kind of toadstools or mushrooms these might be but they look quite happy here...if fungi can actually be happy in its environment.
I would like to think that happiness on some level can be felt by all living things.

Speaking of happiness...

I must confess that I had my knickers in a twist...
not my usual comfortable happy place and I had to snap out of it.

I started going for my walk...
on the regular route.

Dozens maybe Hundreds
 of people running towards me.
Dear reader I had encountered a marathon!

A loud rock band was playing under a tent at the corner
there was a water station set up where runners were grabbing cups
guzzling down the water and then tossing the cups willy nilly on the street.
I feared that I would be knocked over so I grumbled a bit under my breath and took off in another direction...the direction of the cemetery.

All in all it was a lovely walk and I felt totally refreshed when I came home.

~ Crunch crunch crunch crackle ~
the sounds under my feet as the dried leaves collapse.

~ water droplets on a leaf ~

~ the veins in these leaves are so pretty ~

There is so much beauty in the ordinary
it is worth looking closely at every day things that we encounter.
What surprise might we see?

Orange and yellow dinner plate sized Dahlia
still blooming in mid October in a garden on Hollywood Crescent.

This is Chester
the little rascal will not stay off the table.
This is where I have my lap top and where I write my blog posts.

Perhaps this pose is his way of saying I am cute, really I am,
and you know that you love me despite my hi jinx.

There are 3 storms forecast to hit our coast in the next few days and the weather experts are advising us to charge up all our devices, buy extra food and batteries and brace ourselves for power outages and possible flooding.

So if you don't hear from me for a few days
you'll know why!

Thank you for stopping by The Humble Bungalow Blog.
