HIP HIP HOORAY ~ 2 weeks Post OP and some Merit Beauty

 

Well here I am today 2 weeks post op

total hip replacement surgery.

The past 2 weeks have been a bit blurry...

Strong pain medications which are totally foreign to me

sleeping on my back

swelling in my operative leg and ankle

resting mostly in bed

walking with a walker and a cane

doing exercise that strengthen the muscles which have been comprimised

OH MY! I am a rookie and this feels like a LOT.

So besides following the surgeons orders I have been:

Reading lots of books and perusing magazines

posting on Instagram

playing Word With Friends

and

Kind of a surprise to me "online" shopping...

It's a surprise because I am an Old School Shopper who likes to go to a store.

I've been a wee bit obsessed with Merit Beauty for a few years...

and I've watched a lot of You Tubers who share their make up routines.

So I took the plunge and ordered an eye shadow in Iris and a blush balm in Cheeky.

They arrived with a darling corduroy bag and a free sample of the Glow Serum.

I tried them out and immediately ordered 

Instant Glow serum

The illuminator in Bone which is a concealer/foundation

and

The #1brush

I LOVE the Instant Glow Serum and have been wearing it daily

with no makeup while convalescing.

Here's how it looks.

My Thoughts...

The illuminator feels moisturizing on my dry skin but not oily...

the brush makes it super easy to blend

Added a bit extra on my cheek area which tends to be red due to my rosacea.

I used the Cheeky Blush Balm higher up on the cheek and on my lips.

I have to say that I am VERY impressed.

I've got appointments with the doctor next week and the physiotherapist.

I think they will remove the staples (eek)

assess my mobility and give me some new exercises.

I've got a few months before the statistics claim that I will be 90% healed.

I can hardly wait...

I've dodged a bullet because

The Fashion Police have dropped me off their Radar.

Wearing only baggy soft cozy outfits purchased specifically for this rehab time.

As a side note they are all in shades of grey white and black :-))

I cannot imagine trying to put on my beloved Danish Mos Mosh jeans.

No deep bending and dressing with a surgical bandage would make it a challenge.

I'm already dreaming of wearing my denim shirts and white tees.

Pearls have definitely helped me keep my spirits up!

I've worn them to remind myself that I am still ME.

So I suppose that's enough chatter for my first post "post op."

about our cat Pepper's 

recent passing...

Chester has been keeping us amused with his antics...

he is a chunky boy and surprised us by jumping up 3 feet from the ledge to the top of the cupboards.

(Pepper used to do this too.)

I am so grateful to have pictures of Pepper and wonderful memories.

Our Humble Bungalow Garden is full of limelight hydrangeas in full bloom.

They are like trees!!

The garden is slowly winding down for a rest...

outside today while hand watering I noticed some of the fading flowers and plants.

There are tomatoes coming along, and a handful of green beans and cukes to harvest.

Inside the greenhouse a watermelon and a cantaloupe.

I've been keeping fairly quiet,

 choosing a few activities that provide peace and solace.

I love daily rituals...

my morning coffee is sacred.

My BFF loves this body serum so naturally I had to try it...

it is made in Alberta and it is very emollient and smells lovely.

I've got crepey skin on my 70 year old arms...

the lotion seems to diminish the scaly look and softens the dryness.

I am using it after my morning showers and I feel like it lasts all day long.

The fragrance is not overpowering...

apparently it comes in a variety of scents.

I met up with my sister...

if you have been following me for awhile then you might remember that she is an accomplished equestrian who teaches riding.

I've heard her called "the horse whisperer"

She's had quite a few horses over the years...

as she started riding when she was about 12 years old.

As luck would have it she helped me to tick off one of the things on my bucket list...

(drive a vintage tractor)

We harrowed a paddock...

this tractor pulled a harrowing attachment which basically rakes and levels out the sand 

in the riding ring.

When I drove it I went slow (1st gear)

she was more experienced and went faster...it still took awhile to get the job done.

My recent tractor ride coincides with a thrift shop find...

Jeans are very stiff...

I need to wash them a few times and wear them in...

perhaps beat them on some rocks?

(isn't that what they do when they stonewash jeans?)

I'll never make a farmer or even a farmhand :-))

(I am much more suited as a gardener)

Met up with friends for a coffee and a chat...

so relaxing sitting in the sun sipping coffee and nibbling a cookie.

It was a lovely meet up!

The Miriam sweater is progressing well...

knitting the yoke now and then will bind off and pick up stitches along the front.

There is garter stitch edging that matches the hem of the sleeves and body.

 

Using the vintage Baycrest Aran yarn that our daughter found at the thrift shop.

I found two new pieces for my vintage 1930's tea set last week...

a cup and saucer and a large plate.

Pieces are hard to find locally so I felt like I had won the lottery!!

I have ordered some online but they are much more expensive due to shipping and the rarity and availability of this pattern.

NEXT

I need to have some friends pop over for a cup of tea and a piece of cake.

Well I didn't think I would be posting a new blogpost

quite so soon but I guess I am ready...

Wore the thrifted Butler bird brooch on my handknit sweater...

it makes quite a bold statement...it is bigger than most of my brooches.

I also wore in on a black boiled wool tunic top with black pants.

Some of the last garden roses...

the blooms are lovely but the usual fragrance is missing.

They will be sweet smelling again come Spring.

Went to the Church Hall for the Friday Sale...

found a VERY tarnished tea strainer.

(I thought it might even be pewter)

After some silver polish and a few minutes later...

The sale was well attended and it was a challenge to move about!

I found some nice ribbon for wrapping gifts.

My ribbon supply has almost been used up.

I love to use gross grain and satin ribbons...

but I don't always want to pay high prices for ribbon.

single paned windows and limited insulation from 1912

make for cool indoors during the Fall and Winter season.

This vest is warm and will allow for movement...

cooking, cleaning, bread making etc.

In other news ~ the concussion is still with me.

I have some woozy moments and have a mild headache.

Am doing online balancing exercises to see if I can improve my stability.

Walking with the Urban Poling Poles.

Attending Webinars put on by Vancouver Coastal Health

on osteoarthritis and learning a lot about what I can do to reduce pain 

strengthen the muscles that support the hip.

We've put up the faux tree with twinkling white fairy lights.

One of our cats still climbs the tree

so we do not add our vintage glass baubles.

One year the cat knocked the tree to the floor 

resulting in a mess of shattered baubles...

sadly several vintage treasures were lost.

 

We keep our decorating simple and have added some silver baubles and stars.

Do you follow Pamela Anderson on Instagram?

She has moved back to the island, renovated her family home,

 planted rose and vegetable gardens and more recently has published a cookbook.

She has totally reinvented herself...written a memoir, appeared in a documentary

starred in a play on Broadway, and is appearing in films.

Pamela is a co-founder of Sonsie skincare products.

My skincare products were getting low and when I heard that she had a rose scented cleanser I thought I might try some.

I purchased the "bundle" cleanser, serum and moisturizing balm.

I would have bought the lip balm but it was sold out.

I have been using the Sonsie products for about a week and already can see an improvement in my skin tone.

Having rosacea and seeing a reduction of redness is VERY exciting!

Hydrangeas are almost done for the season but I managed to salvage a few blooms.

These have dried nicely in a vintage Crown Ducal Vase. 

After 3 years of lusting after this Cocoon wool and cashmere coat from Aritzia

I finally bought it and I am SO GLAD!!!

Cold weather means warmer accessories...

the walks by the sea are very cold.

I had a fall a week ago...

Hurt my hip and knee which are badly bruised.

Sustained a cut above my eye.

My eye lid and area below were really red but now are a limey green shade.

Managed to get to see the doctor who sent me for X Rays.

Fortunately nothing is broken.

However I do have a concussion and have had a CT scan...

results should be forthcoming.

Research on walking assists inspired me to buy walking Poles.

Our local Wellwise store carry the poles.

Hubby bought a pair for his walks too.

I have used them a few times and they make a HUGE difference.

 My confidence, stability and balance are much improved.

Do you use walking poles?

Tis the season for candles!

Beeswax and a scented candle on the vintage silver tray add ambiance.

I like to sip my coffee, read my book, or knit with these candles glowing.

It has been a quite a week with my bruises and fuzzy head.

Hubby "cooked" which meant that we ordered Thai food and had White Spot.

Thank you honey it was a nice treat :-))

He was my gallant chauffeur for a few appointments and for that I am thankful.

Feeling much better

I am driving again and have been shopping and running errands.

Lots of Christmas baking to do to fill my cookie tins...

Drugstore ~ Skincare and Make Up

 

When I was in Paris I made a pilgrimage to the "Pharmacie."

(easily identifiable by the large neon Green Cross)

Many seasoned travellers suggested the local Paris Pharmacies as a must see.

I was surprised by the popularity of these local shops.

Some actually had a line up out front !

I visited several Pharmacies in different arrondissements.

Some were larger and had more skincare products.

Citypharma at 26 rue du Four in the heart of Saint Germain des Pres has the reputation of being the BEST.

I stayed in the 6th arrondissement so this was closest.

(It did not disappoint)

The pharmacy is often crowded as it is very popular with locals and tourists.

Shelves are loaded with jars and bottles of serious skincare products.

Staff are happy to consult with patrons and are readily available to give advice.

The Pharmasave on Oak Bay Avenue 

has a wide variety of reasonably priced products with trained staff on hand to help.

One needn't spend a fortune to get good quality skincare products...

For example

Andalou Natural Products...

the company make product lines to suit most skin care needs.

I have enjoyed using the Andalou Rose products in the past.

Recently I have switched up to the Age Defying series.

I like the rich formulas...my skin soaks up the moisture.

I like to keep my skincare regime very simple.

Wash, tone and moisturize.

An intensive moisturizing enzyme facial mask is used once a week.

I have added a serum which helps particularly in the winter.

Derma-E Vitamin enriched serum is my favourite.

Rosehips and Grape Seed Oils 

Vitamin A and E

(4 drops morning and night ~ this bottle lasts a few months)

I wait 10 minutes before doing my make up 

to allow the oil to sink in and be absorbed.

My make-up routine is minimal 

5 minutes tops.

Minimal coverage and a light touch work best for my older skin.

Found a pretty vintage silver cake server this afternoon.

I met up with a friend who came over from the mainland for a visit.

We walked along The Avenue popped into the shops and had a lovely long lunch.

Joanne surprised me with a blue tote bag and a book AND she treated me to lunch.

We always have a lovely time chatting.
