September ~ Mid month musings...

 

Sunny Yellow Dahlias are putting on a bright and bold showing.

We've planted these in a vintage garden wheelbarrow and parked it out front.

The flowers are continuously blooming...

 I suspect they will be around for another month.

I've picked a few on occasion, 

I like to leave most of them on the plant for maximum effect!

There are so many beautiful and different varieties of Dahlias.

 I think I need to find a few more varieties for the Humble Bungalow Garden.

Mom used to grow Dahlias.

Some she called "dinner plate dahlias"

they were the size of a dinner plate...

with spiky petals.

Mom had a bed dedicated just for growing Dahlias...about 6 foot X 20 feet.

A rainbow of colours and a variety of forms...

She would pick bunches and bring them inside our home, 

scattering them in most every room...including the bathroom.

I think she used ALL her vases for these displays.

Recently I had a very lucky day at the thrift shops...

I drove out to Brentwood Bay and Sidney and had a good look.

Circe is a book that I have been meaning to read for many years.

The sugar bowl has been on my radar for several years...

this one has a monogram, unfortunately not our initials.

(I figure it just adds to the charm.)

The simple silver tea set...

2 thrifted tea strainers...one is sterling, the other is silver plate.

This pattern is for afternoon Teas...

I have some side plates and a couple of cake plates.

Fortunately I found most of these pieces locally in thrift and consignment shops.

This is one of the Birks gold earrings that my husband gave me 45 years ago...

they were a grand gesture gift for Christmas when I was a stay at home mom.

Two babies and we were scraping by 

with not a lot of cash leftover from our expenses...

when to my surprise and delight my husband gave them to me.

A few days ago one fell into the toilet 

as it was flushing and I couldn't grab it in time.

The sadness that followed was profound...there were tears.

I have worn these throughout the years and I felt they were priceless.

Sentimentally I felt like I had lost something really BIG.

After a couple of days, and encouragement from our daughter and my husband...

I went to a local shop Old N Gold and found another pair.

Slightly bigger and the gold on these is twisted...

(Italian earrings)

I traded in the solo earring and walked out of the shop wearing this new pair.

As someone on Instagram said...it's a new chapter.

After Yoga I popped into Adventure Clothing on Oak Bay Avenue...

I saw a cute pair of jeans that are wider and cropped.

They were on display with a shirt from the Cornish brand Seasalt.

I tried them on and really liked the fit...

they are by the company French Dressing.

The printed Seasalt Shirt was really pretty but I don't usually wear prints.

Stripes yes, but prints...not so much.

Do they look like Sailor pants?

Pedal Pushers?

Well I LOVE them whatever they are called...

I've been having fun styling them with items that I already have in my wardrobe...

for example:

white linen top and jacket

white Tee and blue and white striped Ralph Lauren oversized shirt

Long sleeve white top with a hand knit Miriam sweater in a teal blue shade.

I am thinking I need some red cowboy boots to wear with these this Fall!

Our dwarf apple trees are full this year and we have a grand harvest...

Chehalis apples (above) are green and slightly tart.

Liberty are a bit sweeter...

Both are great eating apples.

 I also use them for pies and crisps.

Do you have fruit trees?

I picked some hydrangeas in hopes to dry them...

these are different from the Limelight and Annabelle hydrangeas.

We have two plants and one is rose coloured, the other is blue.

They grow side by side and I wonder if the soils PH is different?

My mom used to say that hydrangeas can change their colour

 simply by adding copper pennies...

I am not sure if this is true or an "old wives tale?"

Do you know if it works? 

Have you tried to change the colour of your hydrangeas?

We have been enjoying the garden and have had a few quiet days.

We celebrated our darling grand daughter's 15th birthday and Father's Day.

Snacks on the deck with a variety of things...

cheese and crackers, 

veggies and hummus, 

homemade foccaccia bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar

raspberry tarts with coconut whipped cream

watermelon

Presents were well received :-))

(a list from the birthday girl helps)

We purchased some planters from the garden centre for the tour...

they are a great pop of colour.

Roses are in their glory...

May and June are the prime months for roses here in The Humble Bungalow Garden.

Climbing Royal Sunset Rose 

and a riot of foxgloves dotting the perennial beds.

Josephs's Coat Rose...

a huge rose that puts on an amazing show.

Very thorny but multiple blooms on each branch.

This rose has masses of blooms...

I cannot remember the name but think it might be Mary Lester.

The bees buzz here all day long!

Darling daughter found us a fabulous silver tray...

The tray is beautiful and beside it the rose is Ambridge Rose...

it has so many blooms on it this year!

Monday morning starts with Yoga...

I look forward to each and every class.

I came home and made a simple lunch...

sourdough bread toasted with a salmon and celery salad topping.

Open Face sandwich for me and a regular sandwich for Mr. HB

I did some clean up in the kitchen and vacuumed the floor.

I have started a knitting project using the wool that darling daughter found at the thrift shop.

I am making another Miriam sweater...

the colour is a warm beige.

Knitted a few rows then got back to the kitchen and did a fridge clean out...

Decided to make some spiced NUTS!

I know I know...it is usually a winter project 

but that big bag of almonds called to me.

I only used almonds in this batch...

I use sealer jars to store these and often give these as hostess gifts.

They are so yummy!

I made a single batch today...

popped in a load of laundry while these were cooking.

Spoon them into jars right away so they don't get stuck on the sheet pan!

Cool completely before putting on the top.

Knit a few more rows...

Dinner was easy...

I made a "home grown lettuce" salad...

and 

baked frozen pizzas!

I've decided that I need to pace myself...

if I have a busy day.

Wore the thrifted Butler bird brooch on my handknit sweater...

it makes quite a bold statement...it is bigger than most of my brooches.

I also wore in on a black boiled wool tunic top with black pants.

Such fun to add a wee bit of vintage BLING :-))

Some of the last garden roses...

the blooms are lovely but the usual fragrance is missing.

They will be sweet smelling again come Spring.

Went to the Church Hall for the Friday Sale...

found a VERY tarnished tea strainer.

(I thought it might even be pewter)

After some silver polish and a few minutes later...

The sale was well attended and it was a challenge to move about!

I found some nice ribbon for wrapping gifts.

My ribbon supply has almost been used up.

I love to use gross grain and satin ribbons...

but I don't always want to pay high prices for ribbon.

single paned windows and limited insulation from 1912

make for cool indoors during the Fall and Winter season.

This vest is warm and will allow for movement...

cooking, cleaning, bread making etc.

In other news ~ the concussion is still with me.

I have some woozy moments and have a mild headache.

Am doing online balancing exercises to see if I can improve my stability.

Walking with the Urban Poling Poles.

Attending Webinars put on by Vancouver Coastal Health

on osteoarthritis and learning a lot about what I can do to reduce pain 

strengthen the muscles that support the hip.

Thanksgiving...and catch up from The Humble Bungalow.

 

It has taken me a few weeks to get back to blogging...

Not sure why?

 I am here now and am sharing lots of pictures and snippets.

As you can see...

the Hydrangeas are getting crispy!

Time to make a wreath for the front door.

I have a grapevine wreath that I keep for seasonal use.

I just popped a few hydrangeas into the vine and hung it on the door.

It is simple and I quite like the effect.

No fussing required!

I've been busy lately!

Am back at aqua fit classes now that the pool has re-opened.

My arthritis in my hip flared up last week...

I think it was all the tomatoes that I have been eating...

apparently they are high in uric acid and that is a trigger for arthritic pain.

I took a day off and rested.

Fortunately I had a great book to read and the cats kept me company!

I found this Pulitzer Prize winner a difficult book to read 

 I am so glad that I persevered...

it really is an exceptional book, so well written.

I picked some of the Money Plant from the garden

saved the seeds, them popped them into the mosaic vase.

My mom grew these plants and used to do the same thing.

They are paper thin and I like how they glow in the sunlight.

We are enjoying the sunny Fall Days...

I have swapped out my summer wardrobe for the Fall and Winter clothes.

I found this cozy grey sweater dress at the thrift shop.

It doesn't have much "hanger" appeal here, it is much better on!

It is going to be my "go to" dress to wear on a cold day.

I have black capri tights and will wear them under the dress for added warmth 

paired with my Black Chelsea Boots.

My friend Wendie is loaning me her Ruth Galloway series of mystery books.

I am on book number 4 and am loving the stories.

Like Louise Penny, she has many of the same characters, and they develop over time.

 So you should start at the first book and read them in order.

Elly Griffiths has another series that I am planning to read after I finish this series.

The roses are fading in The Humble Bungalow Garden.

Margaret Merrill is a new rose here in the garden.

I found her at the Demitasse Garden Centre in Oak Bay.

She looks healthy and her subtle fragrance is lovely.

I love comfort food in the Fall and Winter.

I searched on google for cottage pie recipes and found this one 

on the BBC Good Food site.

Was very delicious and made enough for a hungry family.

Lots of ferry and boat traffic at the cottage...

Feeling grateful...

Sunshine this Thanksgiving weekend.

Cooking a small turkey with stuffing and oodles of seasonal root veggies.

Gravy and cranberry sauce.

Pumpkin Pie and whipped cream.

Looking forward to turkey sandwiches on soft White Bread :-))

Perhaps I will make soup?

Pasta dinner

I sauteed leftover diced Ham, fresh asparagus, and mushrooms.

Then added a jar of Alfredo sauce.

Served on top of spaghetti with grated parmigana reggiano cheese.

My (new to me) textured charcoal grey tunic top is getting lots of wear.

I am really enjoying the cooler Fall weather and am keeping busy.

Late into the rose season the petals fall when picked...

the fragrance is rich and heady.

The  $2 vintage silver jug looks so much better now that I have polished it!
