I went to the local nursery and bought some lovely plants and things to add some Autumn colour to our home and front porch.
A simple chrysanthemum in a terra cotta pot
which I hope says Welcome to our home.
A white pumpkin and a mixed planter with mixed foliage plants.
A new orchid which I popped into a vintage white planter.
These orchids last for years and re-bloom several times each year...
the blooms usually last for 3-4 months.
I purchased 5 of these wee white pumpkins to use on the dinner table.
A sweet little Kalanchoe in a wee pot for the powder room.
Mr. HB has been busy outside
harvesting the apples from the dwarf trees that we planted a few years ago.
I am making an apple crisp for our Thanksgiving dessert.
Greenhouse tomatoes are finished for the year but this last harvest will be enjoyed and the green tomatoes will ripen in a few days.
I must get back to my cooking...
The menu for the family feast:
Prime Rib of Beef
whipped mashed potatoes
carrots cooked in orange juice with parsley
peas
macaroni and cheese
(4 year old Henry's favourite)
crab cakes
(for the non meat eaters and extras for those who like both!)
my sister is bringing a veggie dish
butter buns
gravy
Apple crisp with coconut ice cream
banana bread
salted caramel truffles
coffee and tea
Must get back to the duties at hand.

ReplyDeleteI am having a Friendsgiving luncheon today - Turkey Meatloaf & Ham, boiled new potatoes, sweet potato mash, carrots & brussel sprouts in maple syrup, stuffing and a beet & apple salad. Pumpkin pie for dessert - but I will also be making an apple crisp later in the week.
Apt. is cleaned so I'm going to have breakfast and then get the table set - most items are already cooked or prepped so not too much to do. Enjoy your day.

Yesterday was busy and today I am feeling lazy...heading out soon for my walk in the sunshine.
I love autumn decorating. I have a collection of Mesoamerican textiles in oranges and reds that I use for the season. Maman and I visited the Westham Island Herb Farm to buy gourds and to experience the peace and beauty of autumn. Your menu sounds delicious. I enjoy apples especially at this time of year. Happy Thanksgiving, Leslie. We enjoyed our dinner yesterday and today has been a lovely, slow day of reading, puttering in the garden (pulled up all the tomato plants) and enjoying the sunshine.

Oh I should have spent the day reading but I actually washed the linens and did the ironing and then got my second wind and made a huge batch of Yorkshire puddings to go with our leftovers!

DeleteI once hosted a dinner party for a large group of coworkers and their partners...the menu was based on local seafood and one of the guests had a serious seafood allergy....can you imagine my dismay? Fortunately I had made lots of salads and vegetables but it was not my best party...and I wished that I had asked about peoples preferences and allergies before planning the meal!
What a feast! We had our turkey dinner yesterday at our daughter's, but today decided we really missed the leftovers, so cooked a 12-pound bird today, and I've got the carcass in a pot right now and the makings of sandwiches for tomorrow, probably a pot pie or two. . . .Honestly, I might like the day-after findings almost as much. . . ;-)

Hi Leslie ... So sorry this is such a belated Happy Thanksgiving as I hadn't realised it was the same time as my birthday weekend ... I had such a lovely time with my family ... Then we flew out to Barcelona yesterday so I've only just looked at your blog ... First chance I've had :) thanks for all the recipes and lovely to see you wearing your mums pearls. I've worn my mums wedding ring since she died apart from during my daughters wedding when she wore it as her "something borrowed" a very emotional moment for us both as I put it on her finger ... We both felt that mum was there with us ...
