The Christmas lights are illuminating the snow laden climbing rose.
I am so happy that those white lights are still strung on the climbing rose...
they add such a pretty touch to the back porch.
These rustic seats and table are part of the local area known as the common.
The common is a spare lot that will never be developed
apparently a brick culvert runs beneath the surface...
(too close to the surface and vulnerable)
there was a creek that ran through the property
the First Nations used to portage along the creek
on their way to the Inner Harbour.
A former resident, who was a gifted woodworker, scavenged the local beach for the materials and built the seats and table.
Neighbours gather here in nicer weather to chat and have picnics or coffee.
Children climb the trees, run around the site and play on the swings.
Our "wee lending library" is situated out front for anyone wanting to borrow a book.
The policy is based on the honour system.
It is suggested that you "take on and leave one."
The turnaround of books is quite amazing...
I took one for Mother yesterday...
The Lake House by Kate Morton.
I plan to read it when she is finished as it has been on my list for quite sometime.
Looking out the back door of The Humble Bungalow at dark.
Thats a lot of snow!
The fluffy white carpet of snow softens sounds
the neighbourhood feels quiet and very hushed.
The trees are laden with snow...
according to the forecast more is on the way.
Chester has found a cozy blanket of his own!
In between their usual cat naps they have been sitting at the windows
watching the snowflakes fall.
Last but not least...
this lovely white heart shaped rock.
This rock has come all the way from Hyeres France,
a thoughtful gift from a local BC reader.
She spends each Fall season with her husband living on the Cote d'azur
they love Provence
and
spend many days exploring the quaint and beautiful villages...
we have met up several times and most recently we had lunch at which time
she shared her favourite spots to visit.
Thank you A for your kind and special gift.
XO
Hope you are cozy and warm.

Pretty pics. Lovely to have a common area like that. Our train stations waiting rooms often have leave one take one book shelves.
ReplyDeleteThe train stations are a great place to share books...reading on the train must be popular.
DeleteThe wee libraries are dotted all across the globe and I think its a marvellous idea. Working in a school library and loving books motivated me to have one on our street...also our bungalow is small so there is not a lot of room to store books so sharing seems like the logical solution!
We're waiting for the next snowfall to hit. I'm going to the theatre tonight and presenting tomorrow at my old school. They have a Multicultural Friendship Club (grades3-4) and they needed a speaker. I'm not a great fan of visiting old workplaces so I've not been back in 5.5
ReplyDeleteyears. Have you visited your former schools? It's so cold that the poor bulbs that have poked through will be having a tough time. I'm reading The Feast of the Roses by Indu Sundaresan but I'm really not getting into it. It was a book exchange book. Neighbourhood
"honour" libraries are great. Are you still planning to go to Provence?
The snow has hit us already today...it started about 10:30 and it is sticking on the streets. My bridge luncheon was cancelled today due to the snow so I am puttering here at home.
DeleteYes I have been back to several of the schools that I worked in...I have taken cookies to the staff....I am not much of a public speaker but reading books to students in the library feels amazing...I love to read with expression!
The plan to go to Provence is very much on the agenda...I am saving every month with that goal in mind.
Your commitment n looks sua lovely place to meet up, it must be lively in the warmer months. Your wintry shots are wonderful, I doubt if we'll get snow this winter, in fact it doesn't like we've had a winter at al.
ReplyDeleteThe weather here has been unusually cold and there has been way more snow. In California they are getting lots of rain which they need as there has been a drought for quite some time... weather patterns seem to be changing...
DeleteLOVELY ALL THAT SNOW to this CALIFORNIA GAL who NEVER SEE's IT!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSTAY WARM...............KEEP BUSY!
XX
Enjoy your rainy days too Contessa...hope that has not hindered your annual pruning of the roses!
DeleteYour winter wonderland looks so still and quiet. The trees and shrubs seem laden with snow, and you say more on the way! We, too, are predicted snow tomorrow, 8-10 inches and a Northeaster which means high winds. Free book exchanges appear to be well liked and used. Currently we have nothing like this. Tomorrow everything will close down until our Northeaster passes. Time to enjoy the Winter landscape and our homes with a toasty fire in the hearth. Susan
ReplyDeleteYour snow pictures are absolutely delightful. Thanks for sharing. Carol
ReplyDeleteThank you Carol...I think this might be the end of the snowy weather for awhile.
DeleteAbsolutely love that first picture!
ReplyDeleteI will pass this on to Mr. HB as it was his bright idea to illuminate the climbing rose...I have really enjoyed gazing out from the kitchen stove when I am making dinner.
DeleteI love looking at other people's snow! We have hardly had any this winter. May get a flake or two overnight, but it's not supposed to stick.
ReplyDeleteOur snow will be melting this morning as we had rain last night and the temperatures are warming up.
DeleteSnowing (again) here too......your "common" looks lovely and sounds like a wonderful spot in the neighbourhood.
ReplyDeleteSuz from Vancouver
The neighbours get together and have a block party where we close off the street once a year...we usually miss this event as it happens during our boating holidays.
DeleteYou make the snow look so lovely!
ReplyDeleteI know it is not as I am up island (Cowichan)
barb
You'll be snowed in up there...I watched the news and I think you have more snow than we do down here...it rained last night and ours is melting...yours should be gone in a few days too.
DeleteIt's so beautiful! Just like a wonderland.
ReplyDeleteIts a bit of a mess this morning as there was rain falling overnight...
DeleteIsn't this snow beautiful? And crazy? After two days at home, we had school again today, but it was wild. Parents picking up students throughout the day in order to avoid driving in the worsening mess. And now it's raining! Stay cozy, Leslie!
ReplyDeleteOur grand daughters school was the same as yours...its warmer today so we should be able to drive without too much peril.
DeleteOh I really love the snow on the rose/lights, and on the tree. It creates a beautiful lace-like effect. Your photos are just so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteIts quite pretty to look at especially at night when the lights twinkle.
DeleteIt is a snow day here for me today. So wintry and beautiful. I plan to hunker down with cozy quilt in front of the fireplace and read most of the day. Will need to take my puppy out for a romp every now and then. Let us know if your mom likes The Lake House- it is on my list to read. Your public garden library is such a wonderful idea. I may start that at work since we are all avid readers. Have a lovely day.
ReplyDeleteMom has been reading the Lake House for a few days and says that she is having trouble putting it down...this is a good sign. She loves a story that holds her attention...good luck with your little library at work!
DeleteBeautiful photos, especially the first, fairy tale one. I like the common,as well as"take one-leave one" book practice
ReplyDeleteI share my books with my mother and my friends
Pavements must be slippery-take care
Dottoressa
The pavements are better today with the sun out and the warmer temperatures but its a puddly wet mess now! I needed to wear my "gum boots!"
DeleteJust a thought for your trip to Province. The 11 th century (I think) town of Valbonne is one of the most charming places I have stayed in the south of France. Close to Nice, Grasse, Antibes & St. Paul de Vence, it is a fabulous place to stay while exploring the region, as well as being itself, full of wonderful restaurants & seemingly endless shops full of delights. The regional market also draws vendors from near & far & offers local food specialties like the wonderful Valbonnaise bread that never makes it home intact, & socca, a fried bread sold from a cart.
ReplyDeleteAlmost anything one could desire is within 40 minutes. You can hike, view pottery studios, glass makers, Picasso Museums & fortified towns centered on the perfume trade.
If I sound like a travel agent, it's only the outcome of my regret that this will be the first year in a while that I won't be able to return.
Meanwhile, I enjoyed your "snow" pictures. It looked so romantic. Up here in our National Capital Region, with daytime temperatures around -15, it just looks, cold until the sun comes out & it all looks blistering white & magical.
Ooh your weather sounds very cold!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the information...I am going to look Valbonne up on the internet as it sounds charming.
Love the common area. I can imagine it is very popular. Lovely winter photos. Ottawa today .... -26!
ReplyDeleteJill
You will find a post on Valbonne / Cote d"Azure on My French Country Home dated Aug 11, 2016. Enjoy
ReplyDeleteThank you I have spent some time online researching this village and I must have read that post on Sharons' blog but will go back and refresh my memory.
DeleteAbsolutely beautiful, a winter wonderland!
ReplyDeleteLovely post ... I like the idea of the "common" and how your community uses it. Thanks also for a reminder about "The Lake House" reading reviews it sounds like a book that will be hard to put down so I'll need to choose a "quiet time" to start it! :)
ReplyDeleteYour pictures are so beautiful .... Chester looks so cute peeking out from under the cover.
Take care ... hope the weather improves so that you're able to do your lovely walks along the coast.
