Flowers, brown paper packages and keeping up appearances...

I wrapped a gift with brown paper and string and it reminded me of that song from the Sound of Music.
I viewed the movie no less than 7 times
my grandmother took me to the theatre often
as my grandfather was a projectionist at the Pantages Theatre here in town for years.....
he earned his gold watch.

I drove up island awhile back and stopped for coffee in Cobble Hill

at the Drumroaster cafe

it turned out to be the best cup of coffee I have had in recent memory.

these little sweets came in a small brown box nestled on top of spun cotton

I will wear them when I want to feel feminine.....

I like taking the extra time to get dressed up to go out

I don't always do this and I should

because I have been "caught" in my Yoga pants and sneakers!

It does seem to me that when I am thoughtlessly dressed I invariably meet up with a well turned out woman friend

who politely ignores my attire

she graciously excuses me when I stammer

"I have just run out of a key ingredient for something that is simmering on the stove and I really must run."

I make a hasty retreat and vow under my breath, that I will not leave the house in the future

unless I look decent...

Sunny Yellow Tulips

fresh flowers in the Bungalow are a staple

considered not to be an extravagance.

In spring and summer the Bungalow garden has plenty of fresh flowers free for the picking.

Roses are plentiful....

Bright blooms are so cheery

I buy them by the bunch in winter.

My "go to" flower shop is Harry's.

they carry a wide variety of greenery

and berries

as well as the mainstream blooms...

I do so love the frothy petals on peonies.

Florist roses are not highly scented like the David Austin Roses

that I tend and grow in The Humble Bungalow Garden.

I'll be perusing and choosing some flowers today

after taking Mother and darling daughter out to tea.

Thoughts of motherhood, food and more...

Children are a gift.
Mothering has offered me so many benefits beyond feeding and diapering.
I am eternally grateful that I was able to be a Mom.
It has been such a huge part of my life...

Tears well up when I recall past events or look at their baby pictures.
I turn to mush.

They grow up so fast and when they leave the nest it is painful to see them go...
knowing that my job was done and that time of my life was over and done with was not without sadness...
sure there would be new beginnings and opportunities would present themselves, but it's not quite the same.

In the quiet moments of solitude over a mug of steaming tea I often go back to those busy days,
the house littered with toys
mounds of laundry waiting to be washed and folded
cookies to bake
lunches to be packed
baths to be drawn
bedtime stories
hugs and kisses
the goodnight bed bug song before lights out...

Was it really so long ago?
It seems like yesterday and my heart is full with wonderful memories
and yet sometimes in the space that happens "in between" moments...
I feel an ache that goes very deep
and it startles and humbles me by it's sheer power.

Spending time with my adult children is so precious
I feel honoured to be invited into their homes.
I love how they have turned out.

Last weekend we were invited to our son and lovely DIL's for dinner
which meant there would be playtime
Isla = hours of grammy good times = LOVE
talk about tugging at my heart strings!

I snapped a few pictures and video's which were emailed off to friends near and far.
Who have responded with oohs and ahhs...thanks guys for indulging me my bragging "grammy time."

The other afternoon our darling daughter called and asked if she could come over and watch The Batchelor
(the ritual mother/daughter show)
and cook us a Thai dinner...
well that's a no brainer...
I'll be the sous chef,
bring it on!

I just wonder how that housekeeper sleeps at night!

Cold winters and a skin care S.O.S

My skin dries out in the flashiest of flashes...
and not those of the menopausal kind.

The kind that is brought on by cold winter temperatures, those on the minus side of zero.
My skin has been rather parched by being outdoors and when indoors the central heating wreaks havoc on it too.
I have a small patch on my cheek that looks flakey despite my best efforts to keep my skin exfoliated and moisturized.
I find this exasperating....

I suppose I obsess about my skin...
with a no make up look I cannot slack off in the skin department.

I'd rather spend money on my skin than buy a new outfit or handbag.
It's something people notice right away when they meet you.

I am going to make an appointment for a professional facial.
It's been months since I had one.
(I will use the gift certificate I received from Mr. HB at Christmas)
I enjoy a little pampering...

My daily army of products are these 5 basics...

I regularly have a home spa day for exfoliation and a mud masque.

The Olay version of the Clairsonic is a great tool which I use several times a week.

Rosacea is a tricky skin condition that needs lots of TLC.

The Sea Buckthorn ointment is only used at night.

I love it when companies put together packages...

this one has eye make up remover and eye cream.

I have not been a regular user of eye cream because my eyes are so reactive.

Rosacea affects the eyes too.

Interesting that the size of these two products are the regular sizes that are on the shelf not travel sizes.

The cost for both was $10 more than the eye make up remover alone.

French women value their skin and take great pains to maintain their complexions.

My Inner French Girl is listening...

I will be visualizing

smoother, plumper, softer, clearer, more radiant skin.

Mother disapproves of spending money on facials and pedicures

she has never gone to a Spa.

My sister and I are trying to persuade her to go with us so we can all be pampered together.

My sister has booked all three of us into a luxe resort in February

which BTW has an outstanding Spa...

so we'll see what happens.

"Geek Chic" Goggles and a Bungalow Style Weekend

Weekends see me getting up later and lazing about in my robe longer
savouring the slow pace
listening to the sounds of the clocks chiming in the bungalow
as life ticks along...

Breakfast usually turns into brunch
with a light snack to follow later in the afternoon
before a hearty dinner of roast chicken or roast beef.

One skillet

brunch for two.

I had a play day and went thrift shopping with my daughter and BFF.

I found a butter dish in our everyday Maxwell Williams pattern

a large vintage English Johnson ironstone bowl

which will be fabulous for pasta, salad or fruit.

I picked up my new glasses

"Geek Chic goggles"

(can you say investment glasses?)

I don't know if they are chic

they definitely are GEEK!

I love them especially with my bright red Chanel lipgloss.

At my age I feel that I have earned the right to push the envelope...

I can see so much better now...

gosh

it's been 3 years since my last prescription

words were getting blurry, very distorted and wobbly.

If things get much worse I might need to get a seeing eye dog...

Are you feeling BLUE?

January and February are months that many people experience a slump in attitude or the blues.
Feeling blah in and of itself is not necessarily a bad thing.
In order to feel joy one does need to know what sadness feels like.

If you are feeling extremely depressed and have lost interest in things that normally made you happy then it is a more serious condition and you might consider visiting your doctor.

Feeling low happens from time to time.
It can be lack of sleep or vitamin D or not enough exercise...
or a combination of things.
Often it is due to worrying about things that are beyond our control.
(I am guilty of this one!)

Are you eating a variety of healthy nutritious foods?
Have you remembered to drink 6-8 glasses of water each day?

Do you set aside some time to sit and quietly reflect on the positive things in your life?

Have you been keeping in touch with your best friends?
Friends are a very dear breed as they accept us with all our quirks and foibles.

I think of these low ebbs as a time to delve deep and learn strategies I need to employ in order to alleviate and reclaim a happy mindset.

Fortunately I have learned to listen to my body and I am proactive and take steps to ward off the blahs...
but if they do strike despite my best efforts I have a few tricks up my sleeve.

Flowers are my go to pick me up...

Narcissus

and

snow dust on the back deck.

"Blues Busters"

Pick fresh flowers from the garden or buy some at the florist.

Call and chat with a friend

or better yet meet for a walk and a coffee.

Wander through your neighbourhood and greet the people you meet.

Watch a movie

(I prefer romantic comedies)

Soak in a hot tub of scented salts

slather on shea butter when you get out

wear your robe and slippers and cozy up with a good book.

Explore the local galleries and museums.

Take a class in something new and exciting...

many courses are offered throughout the community

photography, bridge lessons, ethnic cuisine, crafts and dancing,

are just a few ideas.

Volunteer to help in your community.

The local SPCA is a great place to start...think of all those animals needing a little TLC.

Pepper was a rescue kitten.

Pets are wonderful companions

I highly recommend owning one.

Put your favourite music on and play it loud!

Make some comfort food for lunch or dinner.

Get creative...

knit, sew, paint, decorate.

Browse through inspiring and beautiful coffee table style books at the library.

Have one chocolate and savour the flavour.

Go to the cosmetic counter and have a free makeover

take advantage of the freebies they offer you.

Reorganize your closet.

Go thrift shopping for something whimsical that speaks to you.

Give yourself permission to be sad for a set amount of time and then get on with life.

It's OK to be blue

just don't make a habit of it.

If you or someone you know is depressed

take action

and seek professional help.

Remember to take deep breaths

try to relax

this too shall pass....

We got a surprise when we woke up this morning...
a dump of snow overnight!

I bumped up the amount of sugar this morning.

We take this in at last light and put it out at first light.

There were two of them buzzing around today.

One sits on a branch very close to the feeder conserving energy and possibly standing guard

marking the territory.

Miso soup a warming concoction was made in a jiffy by a chilly hostess.

Greetings!
We have snow and ice, and the roads are treacherous.
Walking is safer than driving but it limits how far one can travel.

Our students had so much fun at recess making snowmen, snow angels and forts.
When I was a child I got so excited when the snow fell.
I have lost some of that enthusiasm...

It is lovely if you do not need to go out or drive anywhere and can stay warm and cozy by the fire, occasionally stirring the soup as it simmers on the stove.

This fellow greeted me today.

He is a handsome specimen if I do say so myself and I can take no credit other than snapping this image.

The temperatures are dipping again and more snow is on the way...

I may pull out my vintage fur coat as the down puffer coat is not quite as warm.

I wish that I had purchased some serious gloves or mitts as my fingers were frosted and chilled to the bone.

I wore my old boots today as I did not want to risk getting road salt stains on my new leather babies.

What a difference a day makes...

My IPhone is with me on my walks and I am finding that it is so handy when it comes time to taking photos.
I rarely get a call while I'm out walking, I take it just in case I might need to make a call.
Hopefully there will never be a need to make an emergency call,
but if one was required I'd be prepared.

I never was a Girl Guide.
I was an Explorer, a Discoverer, and was in C.G.I.T.
(Canadian Girls in Training)

Mother always made me take some money in my pocket for the pay phone just in case...
and she impressed upon me to be aware and alert at all times.
(that and her clean underwear rule!)

I can still hear her voice with her reminders as she zipped up my coat
and then wrapped her arms around me in a warm hug.
I know she loved me so much
and still does...

(it's that maternal feeling of protection that never leaves us moms even after our children are grown and fly the nest)

But I digress...

this is not broken glass...

it's a sheet of ice

BRRR!

the air is crisp and cool

the sun is shining

there's a quickness in my step

I can see my breath as I exhale

too chilly to linger

I keep moving forward

generating heat

and keeping my hands in my pockets

my leather gloves are lovely but sadly they are not warm enough

I spent most of the morning lazing about in bed reading the latest Town and Country

Hostess meets Bumble and Bumble for a razor bob

The tresses have been lopped and chopped...
there were a LOT of curly locks on the floor beneath my chair!

Diane worked her magic
she used her recent New York trek to Bumble and Bumble headquarters
and fashioned the Bumble and Bumble razor bob.

the cut has perked up my curls

it's not too short

and I can straighten it with my flat iron of I want a different look

I could also put in some styling gel and let it air dry for a curlier look

I am pleased with the results.

I am feeling rather like I am a high maintenance woman these days

which leads me right into the recent discussion that

a bunch of us were having

discussing age related things like eyes and complexions and pedicures

we have decided that it costs more to keep up our appearances as we age.

How does one factor in these costs into pension planning I wonder...

I went to the eye doctor and found out that I need new lenses

I don't know why they are so very expensive

($900 just for the lenses!)

I opted for some new frames too

they are rather masculine looking

someone referred to them "geek chic"

we'll see

well that's the whole point

(ha ha)

Gosh that sounds silly but I am not hitting the delete key.

I am not a funny person but I do love a good laugh

I rarely "get "jokes

and am hopeless when it comes to telling them.

I plan to do some entertaining this weekend...

try out some new recipes.

There is something so lovely about white.
I feel an elegance, charm and purity when I am surrounded by this shade and cannot seem to ever get enough of it in my life.
From those ethereal all white bouquets that I compose
to the shabby chic artifacts that keep popping up and into my bungalow
to that classic white shirt
the milky goodness of tapioca
an orchid
or pearls that make a heart sing a song of joy.

White is an instant mood lifter
a beacon of hope
she's a bride
she's a muse
the perfect antidote for the dark days of winter.

Picture white roses, or tulips, or star gazer lilies
draped in swatches
shades of white...

it could be the dishes

of the vintage persuasion

or a combination of both

as they happily marry together

and join us in service

Today the sun shone and I felt a lightness in my step.
The ground was still wet and muddy from all the precipitation but that seemed like a minor inconvenience when there was such a clear blue sky overhead. The weather was perfect for a stroll around the neighbourhood.

Walking feels very like a form of meditation
my thoughts flow and I let them percolate at their own rate
they bubble up and ebb
I see things in nature that give me cause to pause
details that are visible only because I am not rushing
I am open to what might cross my path
and I pay particular attention to what I see
looking clearly at what is before me
what is now
what is here
in this very moment in time
which will be changed a few minutes from now

it might be something as subtle as they way the light falls
or the breeze as it has rearranged the clouds
or leaves as they swirl about

walking gives me perspective
often gives me inspiration
it brings me solutions to problems
and answers to questions

I read an article recently that said 30 minutes of walking a day was a prescription for wellness...
I'd have to agree.

I looked up and studied the trees

After spending a few days in bed staring at the same four walls and reading books I decided an outing was in order.
Gosh it feels good to be back in action!

I went to the mall and checked out the post Christmas sales. It was really busy so I am guessing that there were a lot of other shoppers who had the same idea.

I tried on dozens of jeans until I found just the right fit.
I got some cheap skinny denim jeans to wear with boots.
I really like a bargain and I am not a brand snob

Paws down she gave them her approval.

I love a crisp white shirt with jeans

and I'll roll up the cuffs when I wear ballet flats.

Julian Fellowes is such a clever writer

and the cast is far and away one of the best

the sets and the costumes are enchanting

I have read his books

"Snobs" and "Past Imperfect"

I highly recommend them if you are looking for a good read

they are about the upper crust British Society

filled with tidbits and insights into how the upper class lives...

From France, gifts that I will cherish...

Our dear friends John and Cheryl have been in France for a few months and they have returned home.
(Cheryl is the hostess for the VCCA in Auvillar, France)
We were able to spend New Years Eve and New Years Day together.

Usually we have them stay here but the guest room is currently out of commission due to dust and mayhem with the renovations on the lower level so they stayed in a nearby hotel.

Cheryl who is a talented artist, has a keen eye for colour and a heart of gold.
(her paintings from France are here.)

They never come empty handed...
John and Mr. HB enjoy their scotch and red wines
Cheryl and I prefer bubbly and chocolates.

John is a talented photographer and we were delighted to view some of the images that he took of their life and travels abroad. I think that he would do well to publish these in a book format, they are some of the most beautiful and evocative images I have seen anywhere.

then travel village to village in a horse drawn caravan

setting up on market days and selling their wares

I hope you can read all these wonderful tips on what the oil can be used for...

I like to sprinkle some on my pillow for a sleep aid

it is so conducive to slumber

if I wake in the night I breathe deeply and am lulled back to sleep.

Sleep is so precious

and I need at least 8 hours or I am force to be reckoned with!

I am considering using this for a gratitude journal.

It's so beautiful

I have been temporarily sidelined...

My bed has been unmade for several days

as I have spent the better part of the past week hunkered down.

Pepper has been my companion and she seems to like napping with me.

I cannot decide if I have a bug or am over tired or have something else unknown going on...

I've made an appointment with my doctor just to be on the safe side

but he's a busy GP so I will not see him for another few days.

Many of my co workers have been sick too

so I know something is worming it's way through the ranks.

I make a very bad patient on all fronts.

I get frustrated laying about

and feel so unproductive.

I'd never be the kind of woman who likes to eat bon bon's in bed!

I have finished The Distant Hours and it was a great read.

I read her other book The House at Riverton

and I also have The Forgotten Garden on my book stack waiting.

I did get myself up and dressed to attend the memorial service for my BFF's husband's father.

I found it challenging trying to decide on my OOTD

with a foggy brain...

a light spritz of eau de toilette

The service was held at the Yacht Club

and many familiar boaters were in attendance.

It felt good to connect with all the family

and to take a few moments to look at the board of photos taken throughout the years

and see his deck chair, burgee and boaters cap on display.

Driving home I felt a melancholy rise up in my chest...

Michael Buble's Crazy Love CD was playing in the car and I cranked it up on Whatever it Takes My Love

and had a good weep.

Music moves me

it always has and continues to do so...

I plan to sink my teeth into a new novel

and keep hydrated

while keeping warm in bed.

Detox and a fresh start....

New Years brings with it a fresh start,
a clean slate and anything feels possible.

Holiday chocolates, cheeses and cocktails are over for awhile...

I embrace change at this time of year when a healthy optimism prevails.
It seems like a good time to get serious about ridding one of those bad habits...
a detox is one of the first things I like to do at this time.

I am going green

with Green Apple Greens+

1 1/2 cups water and a scoop of this powder

shake and sip

a healthy detox in a jar

what could be easier?

I am eating lighter

making and sipping Miso soup

drinking lots of water

a wedge of fresh lemon squeezed into each glass

and I am resting up

going to bed early with my latest novel

a gentle pick-me-up in a jar

dishes get cleaned the green way too

I am wishing now that my yellow gloves were green.

Hand cream goes on before the gloves

for a mini spa treatment

who says domestics can't be fun?

I picked this magazine up at the market

it looks like I am not the only one thinking about detoxing and refreshing one's life.

Perusing the pages I noticed that there are great ideas for getting healthy by employing common sense ideas...

eating better

exercising

reducing stress

relaxing

kicking the caffeine habit

going to bed early enough to get a full 8 hours of sleep

spending quality time with people that you love and admire

those you hold dear, those who inspire

letting go of guilt

all great thoughts

I have a few things on my to do list...

make an appointment with my optometrist and have my eyes examined

book a hair appointment for some layers to slightly alter my current style

get my teeth cleaned

schedule a time for a massage

buy some new foundation garments

(translation = lacy lingerie!)

and

go through my junk drawer and toss what's not necessary and tidy up the mess

add all the birthdays that I need to remember and put them in my daybook

toss out and recycle anything in my wardrobe that makes me feel fat or frumpy

polish shoes

and give handbags a wax and a polish

tend to any garments with loose buttons

wash wool sweaters

take the non washables to the cleaners

Phew!

and I make sure to schedule in some "down time"

I do love to cross off these tasks after I complete them

and there is a satisfaction watching the list shrinking as the days go by...

Remembering a fellow boater, the OOTD New Years style...

My BFF's husband's father passed away on Christmas Eve...
a massive heart attack....
this event was so unexpected
as he was, by all appearances, a hale and hearty fellow.

We knew him well as we spent many happy summers cruising in our boats and we joined in on many family gatherings.
(we are "adopted family, non related hanger-on-ers" )

Despite their recent loss, our friends decided to host New Years Eve dinner at their home.
My BFF set a lovely table, and I realize now that I forgot to take a photo...
It also happens to be the eve of my BFF's husband's birthday so we rarely miss spending time with them and were grateful that they wanted to be with us.

There were 6 of us who came together to contribute food and bubbly and who sat down to feast on Caesar salad, fresh Dungeness crab and a delicious chocolate torte.
Our Vancouver friends John and Cheryl, who have just returned from Auvilar France joined in the fun.
Spending the evening with friends sharing an intimate meal felt perfect to me.

Thoughts of life and death

and family and friends are popping up today

as I go through the motions of domestic chores.

Rather than shrug them off I let them flow...

I am feeling emotional, rather close to tears

as I clean the fridge and check the best before dates on the condiments.

The washing machine is whirring loudly

the dryer hums...

I have run vinegar through the coffee maker

wiped the kitchen counters

and here I sit typing

listening to these familiar sounds as they echo through the bungalow walls

outside there is birdsong

the skies are grey

clouds reign

I am still...

in quiet contemplation

pondering and

remembering a life

well lived...

Flowers...

pretty pure white blooms.

Words, however kind,

can't mend your heartache:

but those who care and

share your loss wish you

comfort and peace of mind.

May you find strength

in the love of family

and in the warm embrace

of friends.

I was recognized and identified....

Minding my own business
as I stood at the counter of the local shop,
consigning the lime green Franciscan ware set of dishes that I was so tired and bored with....

I was approached by a smiling woman whose face I did not recognize...
she introduced herself
when I heard her name I knew immediately that she was none other than the author of the blog Pondside!

I was busy at the counter so she continued shopping while the clerk finished up the paperwork.
She paid for her merchandise; a lamp and a cheery pillow for her sunny bedroom...
we decided that coffee was in order.

A short drive later, we found ourselves perched upon high stools seated across from each other
sipping steaming lattes.

Pondside has a very interesting job,
she comes from a creative and talented family who are very much in the public eye.

We both have long time marriages, are family oriented, are happy grand mothers,
we both love to read, and are keen walkers.
The topic of conversation ran all over the map...and an hour passed swiftly.

She is lovely...

a genuinely warm and gracious woman.

She spent her morning walking with her friend along the blustery ocean seafront

and had already enjoyed a coffee with her friend

so I felt honored that she take the time to sit and share a cuppa with me.

a "secret hobby"

only a few of our friends and family know about.

Quicker pasta and the menu for New Years Eve.

There's a happy Hostess in the Humble Bungalow these days!
Pasta making just got so much easier...

My first ever Kitchen Aid attachment,

it works like a dream.

It only takes minutes to run it through

and it is so easy

I cannot believe how fast this happens and with very little effort on my part.

I use the food processor to make this pasta

Adrienne from La Vie Quotidienne

gave me the recipe and I love how easy it is to make.

I made a simple sauce

saute onions, garlic and mushrooms in olive oil

add a can of DOP Italian tomatoes

some red pepper flakes, salt and pepper

and simmer for about an hour to allow the flavours to meld.

Cook pasta in boiling water until al dente

fresh pasta takes less time

so check often

sprinkle some parmesan cheese on top

enjoy!

I am getting ready for New Year's Eve dinner

several couples are celebrating at the table

White Wednesday and more...

It's White Wednesday today...
and I have not posted on this theme for ages.
While one might expect snow and all it's pure whiteness
we are experiencing a very torrential Wet Wednesday!

Here in The Humble Bungalow we love to give gifts
and at Christmas, especially to our children.
It's a habit that goes way back and one that gives us great joy.

The gifts needn't be expensive nor do they need to be new.

I love finding second hand Mid Century Modern pieces...
this year I was able to source
a Dansk teak tray,
a Festivo tall art glass candlestick,
a set for four vintage linen place mats and napkins in their original unopened package
a matte white Rosenthal embossed vase
a Catherine Holm black and white covered casserole dish.

Our adult children collect, live with, and use mid century furniture and accent pieces.

My sister gave me this soft and lovely Pashmina,

Mother received one as well

and Sis bought herself one too.

(like my sister and Mother I usually find one thing for myself)

and those lucky enough to be recipients were thrilled!

I look quite tired here

and I am!

I find that after Christmas day and dinner it takes me a few days to rest up.

I am loving the Chanel Triomphal that I bought for evening

here it is making an appearance in the daylight

in an attempt to add some energy

and colour.

Lip colour is the one of the quickest ways for me to perk up

besides drinking lots of Perrier.

As the Hostess and cook I like to wear cool "food friendly" attire.
(it's hot in the kitchen)

My Christmas OOTD was a sleeveless LBD with black beaded flowers,
charcoal hose and black slingback shoes.

A black apron protected me from splatters...
I added a little bit of bling just because I felt like it...

Plain and simple.

Pepper wanted to jump up on the table

so we had to put her downstairs until dinner was finished!

On a walk in our neighbourhood

we found some cedar cuttings

and I popped them into some matte white vintage pottery.

They sit on the window ledge above our sink.

I put the reindeer on the boughs

they were the centre piece

they looked lovely flickering in the candle light.

It's the Tuesday after Christmas and we have dined on turkey sandwiches with gravy dip...
decadent and tasty,
if it were not pouring rain I would have gone for a long long walk today.

We sat in front of the warm fire in the Bungalow living room and read books this evening.
There is such luxury in reading and relaxing.

The paper whites

are pretty and perky

and have shown no signs of wilting.

I, on the other hand, feel like crawling into bed early

between the cool sateen sheets

cocooning with my book

sleeping long

to awake refreshed

ready to greet the day

renewed

with energy and an optimistic view.

I received the DVD

"Midnight in Paris"

and am keen to watch it.

Mr. HB gave me a Spa Package at my favourite hotel.

I am going to savour that gift...

Shampoo Spa...a tonic.

A lazy start found me sipping tea in bed
the sun streaming in through the windows
with no definite plans...

What luxury!

It's been awhile since I have indulged in a professional facial and I thought my complexion looked liked it needed an intervention.
I got out my home spa potions and gave myself the royal treatment.

Microdermabrasion scrub which is gentle and safe enough to use on rosacea.

Moisten skin first

portion out a small amount using a light hand

move in small circular motions all over the face

and don't forget the lips.

Rinse well and gently pat dry.

Mix Burt's Bees Mud Mask

with a little water and make a thick paste

sweep over face avoiding the eye area

let dry 5 -10 minutes and remove with warm water

a dark coloured facecloth is needed for this job.

(as this has stained my white ones before!)

Mist face with water

or use toner

then slather on moisturizer.

Do not apply make up

let your skin breathe and glow in it's natural state.

The blood will have been flowing with this attention so you might be a wee bit pink.

Do not worry this is temporary and I have the same reaction when I go to the spa.

This scrub is divine!

(thank you DIL and son)

It sloughs off those unsightly bumps on elbows...

but I use it all over for a silky transformation.

Be careful to wipe out your tub or shower after

as this product does make it slippery!

Now it's time to moisturize head to toe...

I love Shea body butter for it's luxe spa effect.

Wrap yourself up in a cozy robe...

The robe is not glamourous or chic

but it does have a soft plush feel and is so very cozy

that I will wear it until it wears out!

It's a humble robe.

Hostess approved Aveda Shampure.

This wonderful shampoo washes my hair, all my cashmere and my brushes.

The middle brush is from Aveda

the other two are so old I cannot remember where I got them...

I do know though that it pays to buy the best brushes that you can afford

as they will last forever with the right care.

(like great lingerie)

Clean

free from product build up

now air drying in the sunshine.

Did you ever see that classic movie Shampoo?

I love it and will watch it anytime it's on TV.

Don't forget to keep hydrated throughout your in home spa day

pour sparkling water into a glass with a wedge or two of lemon for a refreshing drink.

Put it in a pretty glass, perhaps a champagne flute

your spa day should be a rich luxe experience

one that soothes and rejuvenates

and restores.

During this busy festive season it makes sense to slow down.

Finding some time to pamper yourself

which restores a sense of calm will go a long way toward

achieving a relaxed state of mind

which is much more attractive and chic than a tired and frazzled one!

Hostess gifts, OOTD and a recipe for mette!

When it comes to choosing Hostess gifts my favourites are:
natural beeswax candles
French milled soaps
white potted orchids
floral arrangements
olive oil and balsamic vinegar wrapped in a pretty tea towel
chocolates
or occasionally a specific gift item that I know the hostess would love.
More often than not I give consumable gifts.

I love giving and receiving a thoughtful token of appreciation.

I was asked recently by mette, who writes the fabulous blog metscan if I could show her an easy recipe.
This one is for you mette, I hope that you'll enjoy it!

Chocolate Cranberry and Nut Bark

500 g good chocolate
1 cup dried cranberries
1 cup nuts (I used almond slices)

Gently over medium heat melt chocolate in a double boiler, stirring as it melts.
(I used the microwave)
Mix in cranberries and nuts and pour onto a foil lined baking sheet.
Chill in fridge until firm.
Remove from foil and break into pieces.
Store in a tin that you keep in a cold cupboard or the fridge.

My family love this bark!

I hope that you will too.

I indulge in small portions of chocolate as a little goes a long way.

I prefer to let this melt slowly in my mouth savouring the flavour.

Pepper the Fashion Police is giving these new walking shoes the once over...

they look rather serious

and they are sublime when it comes to support and comfort.

Not the most fashionable but they serve a purpose.

Josef Siebel does make great shoes...

in my humble opinion

they are expensive.

Thankfully I balance out cost with thrift.

I have only one gift left to buy

I'm meeting up with some of my besties for lunch this week

and need to pick up the free range organic turkey from the butcher

and get fresh veggies and then I am done.

The Hostess is feathering the nest...

The Humble Bungalow gets a wee make over for the holidays.
Nothing drastic, just a few natural touches are brought in to play.

Paper Whites are blooming

sweetly scenting the kitchen.

An amaryllis stands tall on the Bungalow mantle in the living room.

Hosting the annual turkey feast for the family means a fancy dressed up table.

I like to change up the colour of the cloths and napkins.

This year I am using a black and silver theme.

The cloth and napkins are black,

the accents silver.

I needed some sparkle so I went shopping for some bits and bobs.

Reindeer votive holders will be placed in the centre of the table

and I will find some fresh cut boughs to add a touch of green.

Some bling for the napkins!

Beaded rings will wrap the black napkins...

a touch of icy sparkles.

I'll take a photo when I have the table ready before the guests arrive and post it after Christmas.

OOTD

(Sunday)

I wore black leggings over a long black tunic top and the grey and black striped sweater

bow toed patent leather party flats

we were off to a brunch with friends

our hostess makes entertaining look effortless

she put on a sumptuous feast for 20 or more

(I didn't count)

We were greeted at the door by her husband

who had Caesar's mixed up and ready to pour

we had one in our hands

almost before he shut the door!

After mingling and chatting as everyone arrived our hostess laid the table with a colourful array of tasty food.

Quiches, fritttata's, ham, cheeses, bagels, greek yogurt, fruit salad, beans, artisan sausages

juice, coffee and tea.

It was a wonderful chance to socialize and a great way to jump start the holidays.

She is one of those cats that doesn't like to drink out of a bowl.

I might have mentioned this quirky habit of hers before on the blog.

She has been a bit naughty with the Christmas tree as she likes to sit underneath and bat at the baubles.

Family matters

Our annual traditional tree decorating Pizza Party was on Friday.

Our tiny Charlie Brown Christmas tree was draped with vintage ornaments and glass garlands.

Vintage birds

German pine cones...

and

small glass baubles.

The littlest angel helped keep our spirits bright

her smiles and charms worked their magic.

She is the shiniest star in our lives.

We are so blessed.

Mr. HB's Mother had a fall and her caregiver thought that she needed to have an X-ray.

One phone call and
everything changes.....

Mr. HB spent the better part of his day sitting in the Emergency Ward waiting...

trying to keep his Mother calm and reassure her.

It's good that they went to the hospital because the X-ray showed a broken elbow.

We are getting advice from the orthopedic surgeon,
and await a consultation with her GP.
Surgery can be risky and hospitalization will be somewhat unsettling for her as she is almost 94, likes familiar surroundings and a predicted routine.

I was at home preparing for our annual Family Tree Decorating Night while Mr. HB was with his MOM at the ER.
We had no inkling that her fall had been so serious.
I am so grateful that I could be kept updated by texting...
because my first reaction was to postpone the pizza party and rush up to help out...
it is so hard not knowing what's going on in a situation such as this one
and the waiting just escalates worry and fear.

The kids arrived and we ordered pizza and munched on appetizers until Mr. HB made it home.
The darling Miss Isla kept us entertained!
She had fun opening and closing the kitchen cupboards and taking out the contents and putting them back.
She repeated this many times and what a twinkle she had in her eyes...
she also left me a wee tomato lipped kiss mark on the glass at the front door
a sweet reminder that I will leave up for a few days because it brings me joy.

It's times like this that remind me of how grateful I am for our family and dear friends.

Friends and family really do matter.

I have been reading lightly lately.
There are many distractions and I am not able to focus on a novel right at the moment.
So I have been perusing magazines...

Town and Country has a very interesting article on Sea Buckthorn!

My issue arrived in the mail today, several days after I bought the Sea Buckthorn Salve...

It is being hailed as a holy fruit and is being touted as the newest Superfood.

It is showing promise as an age reverser for older skin too.

Exciting

My first impression of Sea Buckthorn salve

is that it works

and it works quite quickly.

My cheeks and forehead have settled down and are no longer pink

I wonder if it will affect the texture of my skin over time.

Christmas cards and letters are arriving in the post.

Catching up on friends and family over a mug of hot tea puts a smile on my face.

Over the dusty granite countertops you can see that the Paper Whites are growing tall.

That dust is from our reno...

we have a very talented dry waller on the job and he is working wonders downstairs.

Pepper and I are staying well out of the way

there's really not much we can do to help.

cleaning and dusting

will be on the back burner until the work has been completed

if you know how this process works there are several sandings required between the muddings

so it is really pointless to clean after each step.

"Wine survivor"

We had fun at my staff party that was held a few weekends ago.
There are quite a few people on staff at my new school.
We have over 600 students enrolled and it is a dual track school, both French and English are taught in the 22 divisions. It is the school that my own children attended and curiously I attended kindergarten there as well!
(many moons ago!)

The party was held at the home of one of my colleagues. Her home is modern, large and has a great layout for entertaining. Over 50 people were in attendance!
We were asked to bring an appetizer or dessert and something to drink.
If we wanted to participate in the game "wine survivor" we needed to bring a bottle of wine for each person that wished to play. Everyone got their name entered 3 times and every 15 minutes 3 names were drawn from a bag.
The last 3 names to be drawn won the wine.
The last name drawn got 15 bottles to take home, the second received 8 and the third got 4.

Mr. HB was fortunate enough to make 2nd place and so we toted home 8 bottles and our wine rack is no longer empty!

We have served a few bottles to our guests already.

The Roast Beef Sunday dinner was enjoyed with a Cabernet Sauvignon.

I have been preoccupied with Christmas preparations and the renovations so my posting has been rather sporadic.

I know that I am not alone in finding that time is full of things to do

and there do not seem to be enough hours in the day to accomplish what is written on my list.

I do find it very satisfying to cross things off and look at a shorter list.

Holidays are on the horizon

and I will be looking forward to sleeping in later

and savouring life in the slow lane.

Domestic helpers and Rosacea Salve

We recently broke a very large Reidel wine goblet,
it snapped with very little force and I was concerned that Mr. HB had sliced his hand.
He was fine but the goblet was a goner.

I have a thing about thick walled wine glasses.
I really truly hate them!
I've tried to like them but I cannot abide the width when sipping from them.
We have owned some for years and I have finally donated those that have been taking up space in the cupboard.
I feel so much better now because they annoyed me every time I opened the door.
De-cluttering is so wonderful...

We have some thin crystal glasses which feel great in the hand and are very light to hold.
They are very fragile and so I hand wash them very carefully.

I use foamy cleaners that we bought from Williams Sonoma in Vancouver.

Use lots of soap and hot water

gently wipe

place on a tea towel and let air dry.

Luigi Bormioli

makes titanium reinforced stemware which is much more durable

and they are whisper thin.

These gloves have a ridges which grip so the glasses do not slip out of my hot soapy hands.

Our farmhouse porcelain sink is not very glass friendly

many a chip has happened by accident

and I do not use any chipped china or glassware.

It repels me.

Chips in crystal and china are to me

what Faux Fuchsia feels about chipped nail polish.

The weather has turned very cold, there was ice in the birdbath this morning.

The grass is frozen and the front stairs were treacherous.

I hung on tight to the handrail on the way down.

The skies are a beautiful clear blue and the trees silhouetted against that backdrop look amazing.

I am so happy that I purchased the down puffer coat this fall

I am toasty and warm on my walks.

My face is the coldest part of me when I walk.

I have rosacea

and cold air exacerbates the skin condition.

It is troublesome,

as the skin becomes quite pink and stays that way.

Products that have alcohol or with hazel are to be avoided as they irritate and inflame the skin.

Gentle natural ingredients are the way to go.

I spoke with the esthetician at the local Pharmasave

who coincidentally suffers from Rosacea.

She has taken many workshops and has spoken to the skin care representatives about their products

with the hope of finding a line that helps her skin look it's best.

She suggested that I try the Sea Buckthorn Salve

it was 1/3 rd. the price of any other product for Rosacea on the shelf.

I am testing it out and will be returning to report back to her in a few weeks.

It is rich in natural oils

goes on smoothly

imparts a glow

and has no scent to speak of...

Rebekah over at Cupcake Caramel

is having a similar problem.

I wonder if this salve would help settle her skin...

I think I'll let her know about this product

maybe it'll help her rash.

Harrods soap, an eggnog loaf, and roast beef Sunday dinner.

When I think of Harrods I think of quality.
My English friends who have lived and shopped in London feel that it is up there with the best merchants.
I am disappointed in their soap...
is it the soap or is it the way that I am using it?

Calling all experts...

here's the soap

smells lovely

all wrapped up in a pretty package

and now look...

personally I think this is hideous looking soap and I am going to chuck it in the garbage

it sits in an english china soap dish with raised ridges to give it a chance to dry between uses

Is it the soap or is it the dish?

What is the problem here?

Please let me know if you have the answer as this is really bugging me.

There are very few pet peeves of mine but this is up there with rudeness

and those annoying sticky price stickers that will not come off of glasses and other things that one buys.

I dislike wasting food and those items that don't get used up before their expiration dates.

Which brings me to the eggnog that is about to get tossed...

Did you know that you could use eggnog for something other than sipping?
I have sampled French Toast made with eggnog and it's delicious.
So in the spirit of thrift. waste not want not...

I went online and found an eggnog loaf recipe which I made this afternoon...

It went together very quickly and baked in the oven for 50 minutes.

I will wrap these up and store them in the freezer

later when I am busy

I'll have something tasty to share with friends and family.

The Humble Bungalow is a busy place these days.

More workers on the scene, dust seeping upstairs.

More next week and the reno is coming along nicely.

Lighting up the Bungalow...
Mr. HB has been busy stringing the white Christmas lights.

He has been up on ladders to add some twinkle and sparkles to The Humble Bungalow.
I like the dark wood details much more at night when it takes on a warm glow.

Daytime it can be dark inside and I find myself turning on lots of lights.

made with whole tomatoes,onions, garlic, basil and red pepper flakes

I'll boil up some pasta and dinner is done.

Quick and easy are the meals these days as there are lots of things to do to get ready for the holidays.

Most of the gift shopping has been done.

There will be some more baking as I give homemade goodies away.

My uncle, who lives alone always gets an assortment of treats.

I take some to work and share them with the staff.

Then there is the fellow who hauls away our garden refuse to the compost centre

and various others who provide us with service over the course of the year that I try to remember at Christmas.

The Food Drive is in full swing at school and the truck will be overflowing with food for the needy.

The sock drive is at 500 pairs with our goal for 1,000.

Street people need to keep their feet warm and dry.

The Hampers are getting filled with toys for the families at the school who are experiencing hard times.

With generous hearts

this spirit of giving could happen all the time.

I'm thinking of dedicated tireless volunteers

whose helping hands and hearts of gold

make such an enormous contribution to our communities everywhere.

I am in awe of you all!

There's lots to do this weekend and I may not get to it all...

OOTD and Gingerbread in the afternoon...

It's tea time in The Humble Bungalow.
Mother and my sister popped by for a visit...
I put the silver service into action and took out some pretty china teacups.

I made gingerbread for tea this afternoon.

I made the recipe in a pie plate so that I could serve small wedges of this delicious treat.

You can serve this with a dollop of whipped cream or a good Greek yogurt if you so desire.

Gingerbread Squares

1/2 c. unsalted butter
3/4 c. sugar
1 large egg
1/4 c.molasses
1 1/2 tbsp. coffee
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground ginger
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
2 cups all purpose flour
1/2 c. golden raisins
1/2 c. dried apricots chopped
1/4 c. chopped candied ginger
2 tbsp. icing sugar

Preheat oven to 350. Butter an 9X9 pan. (or 9 inch diameter pie plate)
Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.
Beat in egg, molasses and coffee until well blended.

Mix or sift dry ingredients together, then stir in wet batter. Mix in fruit. It will be sticky. Press into pan.

Bake 20 -30 minutes until the top starts to crackle.
Sprinkle with icing sugar and slice when cool.

I got some great prep bowls last year from Santa......

they are so handy when you are baking up a storm in the kitchen.
They seem to reduce the mess on the counter and leave little room for forgetting to add all the ingredients.

measuring is easy peasy.....

At tea today we caught up on all the things that my sister was doing in Rancho Mirage,
it is a tony neighbour to Palm Springs.
She shopped El Paseo, rode horses in the desert, walked her dog and swam...
all while her significant other played golf.

They have a townhouse in a gated community and have bought several acres outside of town with thoughts of building a great southern retreat.
I think that they have what it takes to make the classic Canadian Snowbirds.

Meanwhile I have had a house full of electricians and the lower level is in controlled chaos!
Things are progressing at a healthy pace and the reno is in full swing.
The downstairs is not Pepper friendly so we have been keeping her upstairs and safe while the work crews are here.

I am slightly under the weather with lower back pain....
not to complain too bitterly but it is not my favourite way to live.

I have no idea what I have done either, I woke up this way.

I am calling out for the big guns in pain relief
Epsom salts, Voltaren
and ALEVE!

To give me a boost of energy I am colour blocking.
I am wearing a red tunic top with my charcoal wooly tights and my boots.

Two years of blogging and I'm still tapping on the keyboard.
Things have changed a bit over these past two years.
I have noticed that some bloggers have given up, others have changed their focus, some have stopped posting as often, others have huge numbers of followers and have gone on to commercialize their space.

It is difficult to know what direction a blog should take after rambling on for so long and after so many diverse posts. I am wondering if there should be a renovation....

While I muddle and wade through these thoughts I hope you'll tag along with me on this journey.

Muddy boots...

I have muddy boots!
They are not the luxe leather variety that are fashionable, they are utilitarian boots that are made for grime and puddles.

If you have been following along here for awhile

you might remember when I purchased these...

I had been lusting after Hunter boots

and tried some on

only to discover that my legs were too short

and that the top of the boot went well above my knees.

These boots are perfect for me but I do love how the Hunter boots look.

You'd be surprised to see how many of our students at school are wearing them.

There's an adorable young fellow who wears a kilt with his!

Cozy with wooly liners and great for the muddy playground.

Our local "village street" has a new shop which sells rain gear for women and children.

In the Pacific Northwest rain is a given.

So you must be prepared and suitably attired.

Curious about this shop I popped in and checked out their stock...

very chic, stylish, and very pricey

oh and

welcoming staff who were eager to assist.

If Miss Isla were a size 4, I could buy her a pair for $55.

Were she to want some, they come in many cheery colours

I particularly like red and yellow.

I can see her splashing about in puddles

her feet dry and warm...

Our children wore Mothercare boots in cheery red

with their "muddy buddy" zip up gear.

Rain did not keep us indoors.

I am a proponent of seeking fresh air in all kinds of weather.

I used to put my children outside in the garden to nap in the pram when they were babies.

Mothercare was available here by catalog only and it was my "go to shop" when they were young.

(Before they decided what styles they would insist on wearing!)

from Wisconsin was another place that I ordered regularly from...

worn with white tees underneath

gosh they were cute

and they never wore out

I passed them on to several friends and they may still be in service

who knows!

My Mother and Gran, my husband's mother

saw to it that they were dressed up in fancy clothes

smocked dresses with white tights and leather Mary Janes

navy jackets grey flannels shirts and bow ties...

Social outings with the family required more than casual attire

but I digress...

Hermes scarf update...

Lovely daughter in law, mother of the adorable Miss Isla is the new owner of the Hermes scarf !
I have given my daughter one
so it seemed natural to ask Natalie and she said she would not like it,
she would LOVE it!

All wrapped up and ready for delivery.

Joy is utter bliss and can be found in the wee things
all you have to do is look for them
they are the simplest of pleasures that make our days rich and full.

savour and bask in those moments.

Life is a series of events that form and shape you into who you are...
and you can always find ways of making the everyday more special.

Well the time has come to part with one of my lesser worn Hermes scarves.
I am DE-CLUTTERING in a big way!

I checked in with Mr. HB and I mentioned that I might try to sell it here on the Humble Bungalow Blog
and he thought not...
too tacky and so not in the style of The Humble Bungalow Hostess.

I agree I am not really commercially minded.
I know
it's sad.

My question is how should I pass on the scarf?
Retailing in at just a tad under $400
should I give it away?

Would a writing contest be worthy of a scarf?

Are any of you bloggers willing to help judge a Hermes scarf writing contest with me?
I cannot do this alone!
I think that the subject could be "where and how you would wear this scarf!"

Sequins and the memories they evoke...

I am joining Adrienne today from The Rich Life on a Budget and Jill at Everything Just So on the topic of sequins...

My wardrobe would not be complete without some sequin studded garment.
Sequins were something that I grew up appreciating.

Mother in her hey day had a few sequined garments. I remember sitting on her bed watching her at her vanity getting ready to go out with Father. She would be sipping a martini and smoking a cigarette.
She took great care with her hair and makeup and she would dab Shalimar on her pulse points.

Mother and Father had quite a busy social life when I was growing up. My Father was involved in the ELKS Club, a fraternal order of gentlemen who raised money for local causes. He wore a purple Fez and held office while doing many good deeds for the under privileged.
Father was either in the May Day parade riding in a convertible with Mother beside him or at the start co-ordinating behind the scenes. Our parade is one of the largest in BC and many bands from the US would venture north to join in and get practice and exposure.

There were numerous dances and galas which required fancy dress and often Father would wear his tux.
Mother had a large wardrobe just for these occasions and would often whip up a dress the week of a big event.

She would clear off the kitchen table and set up her sewing machine and stitch well into the night.
On those weeks we'd be fed quick and easy meals, often grilled cheese sandwiches and Campbell's soup!

One of my favourite outfits was Mother's black velvet skirt and silver sequined top. The top was pure magic, at least that's what I thought when she put it on. Father would zip up the back zip in one deft move. He'd also fasten the clasp on her Sherman sparkly rhinestone necklace...she'd clip on the long dangly earrings.
She'd pop her lipstick and cigarettes into her clutch and snap it closed.
She was ready for their evening out...

I thought Mother had the best taste in fashion.
Through the eyes of a pre teen, she was much better dressed than my Barbie or Midge.
I must add that Mother made many of their clothes out of the velvets and silks that she herself would be wearing.

Mother elevated getting ready to a fine art.

She'd bathe in bubbles scented with Yardley's Lavender for at least an hour...and we had one bathroom back in those days. She'd announce her intentions so if we needed to use the facilities do it before she finished drawing her bath!
Her hair would be in curlers under the commodious bonnet of the portable hair dryer which was attached to a 12 foot cord that allowed her a range of movement. It was kept in a round case which had an image of the Eiffel Tower on it, I think it might have been made by Sunbeam. Check this out!

Often she'd apply her make up sitting in her silk slip before dressing.
Mother loved fur coats...she had several but never owned a stole.
A stole would have elevated this to a higher plane...

My sister has the silver sequined top now and wears it once in awhile.
It is a heavy top to wear but so worth it!
Vintage circa 1966-67.
Mother mentioned that she had spent quite a substantial sum for this top which is sleeveless with a U shaped neck, a simple tank style. Mother wore it on many occasions over the years, and received many compliments probably because it lit up her face.

I still love sparkly things and I am older than Mother was when she wore her top.
My sequined top is subtle and something I like to wear under a jacket.

Memories of watching Mother get ready for a party and sequins are forever linked.

Lovely daughter has a dress heavily laden with sequins.

I used to sew sequins on her leotards for her ballet recitals....

my favourite things...

I didn't realize how the thought of sequins would bring up so many cherished memories...

it's surprising how easily the past can be revived and I find myself back in the home that I grew up in.

There's no place like Home!

no cake or candles to mark the occasion just another post!

What I wore when the skies of the Pacific Northwest opened up and gave us copious amounts of rain.
There was a destination and a mission.
A command performance.
Mother was involved...

Mother and I had a date.

One does not dress down when out with Mother.

She sets the gold standard for dressing

a former nurse

and a fashion boutique manager in her later working life...

she does not dress down

she dresses up

and I do mean everyday.

Always.

Mother can be ill and still be coiffed and comported.

She will have jewelry on and pearls are her mainstay beads.

Baroque and Opera length if you please!

A pashmina will grace her shoulders

hose

shoes

gloves

a handbag or clutch

it's all part of her ensemble.

I wore my Burberry coat

black ponte trousers

black ballet flats

and I carried my new thrifted Italian ostrich leather bag.

The frosty greeting that met me in the front garden

I scraped the windows of the Volvo wagon before driving the block and a half to pick up Mother at her condo.

Seat heaters on...check.

Symphonic music tuned in...check.

Lipstick on...check.

Hair in place...check.

Positive attitude...check.

We went out for a bit of browsing the boutiques

before tucking into a "wee tea" at a local Tea Room.

A repast that engaged us in a lively dialogue that lasted over an hour...

it might just be our new "go to" spot.

The weather has been quite surprising...

clear and cold

raining cats and dogs

crisp and freezing

cold and frosty....

Garments are hung by the door ready to be chosen at a moment's notice...

scarves and gloves are everyday items now.

Hand lotion is applied several times a day as the chilly weather makes ones hands dry out.

Sipping warm beverages

and

taking vitamins are part of everyday life here.

"The Official Fruitcake of the Humble Bungalow"

I am not the fruitcake in question!!

Christmas is coming....
we do not go overboard with material goods but we do bake.
It is a family tradition to bake some festive treats and have them on hand for guests and for gifts.
Mother's Rum Balls and Scottish shortbread are made every year without fail.
I posted these recipes here and here.

Mother has a very traditional fruit cake recipe that she used to make every year and ladle full of rum or brandy for many weeks before serving. It is a dark cake, the same cake that we served at our wedding and the wedding of friends. It was iced with almond paste and was quite heavy.

For the past 10 years I have branched out and broadened my fruit cake horizons and have chosen the Bon Appetit Golden Fruitcake to be "The Official Humble Bungalow Christmas Cake."

(efi recently requested this recipe)

This cake uses dried fruit...
it is not an inexpensive cake to make but it is delicious!

Humble Bungalow Golden Fruitcake
(makes 4 loaves 8 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 2)

Ingredients;

1 7 oz. package Marzipan
1 1/4 c. chopped dried figs
3 c. dried fruit chopped I used ginger, apricots, craisins, pineapple, and pitted dates.
(choose your favourite fruits)
1 c. golden raisins
1/2 c. brandy

1 1/2 c. softened unsalted butter (3 sticks)
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 c. packed brown sugar
8 large free range eggs
1 tbsp. pure vanilla extract
1 tsp. ground cardamom
1 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. salt
3 c. all purpose flour
1 1/2 c. pine nuts toasted

Cut Marzipan into 1/2 inch cubes, freeze on a plate overnight covered in Saran wrap.
Chop and combine all the fruit and place in a large bowl with the brandy covered on the counter overnight.
Stir frequently.

Toast the pine nuts, cover and set aside.

The next morning...
Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Butter the pans and set aside.

Beat the butter and sugars together in the bowl of a mixer and beat until light.
(I love my Kitchen Aid, I think of it as my Kitchen MAID!)
Beat eggs in one at a time then add vanilla and the spices.
Slowly add the flour in 4 additions, blending well each time.
Stir in the pine nuts and dried fruit and brandy.
Gently fold in the frozen Marzipan.

Divide the batter among the 4 pans, place on a baking sheet and bake until a tester comes out clean...
about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Cool completely on wire racks and then wrap and keep in a very cold room or refrigerate.

These make great gifts and look festive wrapped in ribbon with a sprig of fresh holly.

Paired with a glass of sherry this sweet little fruity concoction has great powers of festive restoration.
Before or after shopping and wrapping gifts...
Personally I love a sliver of this cake served with a cup of tea!

House dressing...

With the Christmas season approaching I like to add a few touches to The Humble Bungalow.
Living in such a wee space I cannot decorate on a grand scale so I choose a few token touches to add a little of the festive spirit. We purchase a live tree about a week before the 24th and then we really get serious and lay on the shine and sparkle.
In the mean time...

The front door must be dressed and a wreath is a "must have."

I prefer natural and organic accents.

This will last throughout the season because the climate here is cool to cold.

they grow tall and bear the prettiest white flowers

which have a rich and heady perfume.

I use this glass building block for paper whites every year.

The glass beads can be purchased at most home decor stores.

It's busy times here in The Humble Bungalow.

Lovely daughter in law and I tripped the light fantastic and went to the shopping mall to buy some Christmas clothes and toys for the adorable Miss Isla, grand baby extraordinaire.

Our expedition started out at Starbucks for some yuletide lattes...

We found many cute things for her at The Gap
and then we traipsed into the big toy store...
Toys R Us and found a couple of board books and an educational toy.

We also checked out some boots, shoes and lingerie at The Bay...
our very own Canadian store which has been sold to an American conglomerate!

I found some new lip gloss from Chanel...

I sat on a tall chair which I had to jump up onto

(I am height challenged so lovely DIL asked if I needed a boost!)

I managed on my own however it was a very ungracious looking move

as I was

laden down with parcels and bundled up in my Burberry quilted coat.

Perched on the chair I was there for all to see as the cosmetician tried several shades

( I think several passers by were very amused!)

after testing, swapping and swiping

we decided on two new colours...

Dynastie is for daytime

the Triomphal is bolder and richer

perfect for nighttime.

The super glossy one is a bit of a change for me

but it catches the light and will look good in the evening.

Lily was the name of the gal at the counter...

she added some samples of Chanel No.19

which is a grassy lighter green scent.

Quite a departure from Mother's signature scent Chanel No. 5.

We were home in time for me to wrap the presents.

This year I have vowed to wrap as I buy...

don't really know why I just feel like it.

Last week I bought Michael Buble's Christmas CD and he does have me in the spirit already!

It's the eve of the weekend here and I hope that your weekend is a dreamy one...

Happy Thanksgiving!

In the US it's Thanksgiving and there will be families and friends gathered together to share in celebrations.
There might be a turkey and the traditional dishes on the menu
or possibly it will be a vegetarian or vegan feast.
It may be simple fare or a gourmet dinner.

You'll probably be dining inside in a heated home,
you might be the hostess or a guest.

Hunger is a something you might never know...
there will be food banks giving out groceries
and organized dinners provided by dedicated volunteers
feeding the homeless and those down on their luck.

Our simple table set for Thanksgiving last year.

However you celebrate I hope that you have an enjoyable day thinking thoughts of gratitude.

You could be volunteering in your community helping the under privileged,
even digging deep into your pockets to help
share some food with someone who is less fortunate.

It is always better to give than to receive....

Blogger meets Blogger!

I got to meet a blogger face to face!
We arranged to meet up at the local Value village store.

Sheila from Ephemera is a fashion blogger who posts most every day what she wears and she has been doing this since 2008! She has great taste in clothing and likes to wear bright and bold colours. She definitely has, what I call,
"the fashion gene."

We were in the VV Boutique for about 2 hours scouring the racks. Sheila wears a much smaller size than I do so we browsed the racks in the same areas in tandem...sweaters, dresses, shoes, skirts...I found a skirt by Desigual for her to try and she bought it!

I spent $83.93 and came home with some great loot!

It's Saks Fifth Avenue for the Hostess too!

My latest "mud pie"...

It's been quite awhile since I have had the urge to play with my paints...
one cannot create unless the mood is right.

How does one know when the time is ripe?

Not sure but there were some things going on and maybe they had something to do with it...
4 loads of laundry needed washing
it was windy and rainy outside
a steaming mug of hot tea was in my hand
Pepper was chasing her catnip mouse
the house was quiet
I was alone
the music on the radio tuned to CBC 2 was upbeat

I needed to be downstairs in reno-ville to access the washer and dryer
and my hobby room is downstairs next to the guest room...
which both are full of things that had to be removed from the areas that are "under construction"

I will not bore you with all the details but it is a mess down here!

Patience, patience....
it will be lovely when it's done.

Mud pie painting is done for fun.
It's that simple.
Like those early kindergarten days
standing at the easel staring at the blank paper
wearing one of my father's old shirts worn backwards with the sleeves rolled up
all students brought painting smocks and their father's cast off shirts were the usual choices...

the teacher bending close to my ear and whispering
"you can do it Leslie, just wet your brush and dip it in the paint"
I was cautious and afraid of making a mess...
well no more
I love to let the brush ebb and flow over the canvas

I've cut off the right side a wee bit but you get the idea.

hitting delete might have been the best course of action

but hey I aim for honesty so here it is...

My hair now has a few layers

the new hairdresser thought I needed some to take advantage of the natural wave and I am in her capable hands until Chris gets better.

She has had the surgery,

and is undergoing chemotherapy...

I took Mother to the hospital for a test

as we were walking in the crosswalk to the parking lot

I saw Chris in her car and I ran over and gave her a hug and a kiss...

oops!

I left Mother standing on her own in the crosswalk

sorry Mom!

She was in no danger

as Chris's car was the one that was stopped at the intersection.

I completely forgot myself in the excitement of seeing Chris.

Gotta love spontaneity!

The weekend awaits...

It's funny how some weeks seem to fly by and others feel like they are dragging along at a snail's pace.
This week literally flew by...

I can hardly believe it's Friday and what do I have to show for it you may well ask?
The usual stuff that seems to take up a lot of time...stuff that I can do fairly easily because I have been doing it most of my adult life.
The domestic chores, dishes, cooking, grocery shopping, walking, working, laundry....

I find that if I put things away the minute that I finish them I can reduce the amount of clutter and chaos.
Keeping things tidy on the home front keeps me in a zen zone.

My cleaning gal does a fabulous and efficient job on her shift so I am freed up to play with Pepper, chat with friends, visit my Mom, browse in shops, see my family, or explore galleries.
(which I have not done for a long time)

I have had coffee out with friends, an in home visit with my lovely DIL and her adorable daughter Isla, walked every day rain or shine, started reading Alone in The Classroom by Elizabeth Hay, blogged, took photographs, played with Pepper, and weighed myself only to find that the scale remained the same as last week...
and I ate one brownie!
Pretty tame and slow, a simple life, a life I am happy to be living, a life that suits me just fine.

In the snow birds are able to snack on these plump and juicy treats.

this hydrangea bush was hit hard by the last winter's weather and I thought it had died but it has rallied

and although it bore very few flowers I think it's on the mend.

This was a surprise!

On the agenda for the weekend

I will be voting in a civic election

meeting up with a blogger for some thrift shopping

making a dinner that I will double to serve later in the week

and pushing the broom in the dusty bowels of the bungalow basement!
